To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED C. WEssMnNN,
a citizen of the United States, and resident of the borough of Queens, in the city and State of New York, have invented. a new and useful Improvement inRacks for Book- Covers and the like, of which the, following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in racks for book covers and the like, with the object in view of providing a device which is capable of holding a large quantity of book covers standing upright on their ends *on trays arranged one above the other, for the purpose of-being dried, after which they may be easily transported for further manipulation.
Another object is to provide a device which comprises a plurality of tray frames having trays thereon, which tray framesmay be independently adjusted vertically in the frame, so as to accommodate covers of different heights between and on the trays, as well as to bring each tray within the reach of the operator at the desired time.
Another object is to provide certain improvements in the form, construction and arrangement of the various parts whereby the above mentioned objects may be carried out. V
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying draw-- ings, in which,

Fig. 5 represents a detail central section taken through the back end of a tray, showing one of its supports and the article supporting means,
Fig. 6 represents a detail front elevation of a modified form of a means for raising and lowering the tray frames,
Fig. 7 represents a plan view of the same,

Fig. 8 represents a side elevation of the same partly in section.
The device comprises a truckhaving a 5 horizontal rectangularbase or platform, de-
noted by 1, and uprights2,;uprising from the base upon opposite sides, which uprights are spaced apart by a rod 3 held by nuts 4 threaded thereon.
The uprights 2 are Tshaped in cross sectionand arranged on the base with the central webs 5 turned inwardly.
A rack 6 is secured'to each of the webs 5, by means of screws 7, as shown in Fig. 3, and extend throughout their length. A plu- V rality of tray frames 8 are mounted to slide vertically between the bars 2, and each frame is provided with guides 9, 10, arranged in position to engage each of the webs 5, upon opposite sides to prevent any lateral movement. The guides 10 are secured to the trayframe 8 by means of screws 11. The tray frame is also provided witharms 12 extending laterally therefrom, to which arms channel bars 13 are fastened by screws 14. The channel bars l3 serve to removably support a tray 15 in position between the uprights 2.
The tray may be formed of a thin board 16 having a'corrugated top 17, the edges of which board are bound with channel iron 18, which tendsto stiffen the tray.
A swinging rest 19 is pivoted at 20 to the back end of the outside channel bars 13, and
provided with depending arms 21 having their free ends turned inwardly to form stops 22 which are arranged to engage the. lower edges of the channel bars 13. The rest 19 may be swung downwardly, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 5, when not in use.
The tray frame with its tray 15 is arran ed to be independently raised and lowered by means of pinions 23 fixed on a cross shaft 24 mounted in lugs 25 extending from the tray frame, which pinions are adapted to coact with the racks 6 secured to the uprights 2. The shaft 24 is also provided with a worm wheel 26 which is arranged to be rotated by a worm 27 fast on one end of a shaft 28, mounted in brackets 29, 30, eX- tending from one of the lugs 25. The other end of the shaft 28 projects a slight distance beyond the arm 29, and has a pin 31 passing therethrough, so as to be engaged by a slot 32 in the hub 33 of a crank 34. Thus it will be seen that as the crank 34 is rotated, motion will be transmitted to the shaft 24 through the worm 27 and worm wheel 26, rotating the pinions'23 which coact with the racks 6 fast on the uprights 2, thereby raising or'loweringthe tray frame. according to:
In Figs. 6 to 8 inclusive, I have shown a modified form of'mechanism for raising and lowering the tray frame, in which a pinlon 36 fast on a shaft 37 is journaled in the lugs 25 and has its outer end squared forthe-reception of acrank 38. I
The shaft 37 is also provided with aratch-z et wheel 39 which is engagediby a gravity operated pawl 40, pivotedat 41 to anextension of the. lug 25, which holds the pinions 23 and .36 locked against .any downward movement of the-tray frame.
It is evident that various changes may be resorted to in the form, construction and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of .my invention, and hence I do not wish to limit myself to the structure herein set forth, but
What I claim is:
1. A device. of the character described comprising a truck having a base, a- T shaped upright mounted centrally on each of twoopposit-esides of said base, said uprights having their longitudinal webs inwardly disposed, a rack secured to each of said webs, a series of frames mounted to slide vertically between the webs, arms extending laterally from said frames, a shaft having pinions fixed thereon carried by the frames in position for the pinions to coact with the racks, trays carried by the arms on the frames and a manually operated means forindependently rotating each shaft and itslpinionsto raise or, .lower its frame and "tray,
