, which is adapted to be used in connection with socalled safety matches not readily ignitable except when brought into intimate forcible contact with a prepared igniting surface.
A second object is to provide means combined with the box which .will deliver a single match in an ignited condition, in such position as to be reac ily grasped by the user.
These and other like objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which Figure 1 illustrates a perspective view of a match box with the plunger thereof extended; v
Fig. 2 illustrates a perspective view of the body of the box without fittings;
' Fig. 3 illustrates a perspective view of the match box;
Fig. 4 illustrates a view in elevation of the interior of the box, parts being broken away;
Fig. 5 illustrates a sectional View on the line 55 of Fig. 4;
Fig. 6 illustrates a side elevation of the box, the same being partly in section;
. Fig. 7 illustrates a longitudinal sectional view of the match box, on a line 77 of Fig. 4;
Fig. 8 illustrates a transverse sectional view; and
'Fig. 9 illustrates an end view thereof.
The box, as indicated, is comprised of a rectangular block 15, having a metallic plate 16 covering one end, and containing on its upper surface, midway in its length, a longitudinal recess 18, having a beveled floor or surface 19, the length of the recess 18 being slightly greater than the length of an ordinary commercial safety match 20, which partly rests upon the inclined surface 19, and also upon a similarly inclined surface 22, formed on a block 23, the recess being 'covered by a lid 25, engaged by the hinges 26, held in closed position by the snap catch 27 in an obvious manner.
A metallic plate 30, is held to the body by the screw 31, the forward end of the plate having a downwardly turned edge 32, forming one side of a slot 33, which passes longitudinallythrough the block, while below the plate 30 is a slide 35, having an enlarged knob or head 36, adapted to be operated by the fingers, the slide 35, having a longitudinal slot 37, through which the screw 31 passes, and by means of which it is pre vented from being moved too far outwardly.
In the slide 35 is another slot 38, adapted to be guided by the extension 32 of the plate 30, so as to work smoothly longitudinally,
while the side element 39, of the slide 35, when retracted, is adapted to engage with the rear end of a match 20 pressing the same forward through the slot 33 and out through an opening 41, in register with the slot, and formed through the plate 16.
In the lower side of the body 15 is a recess containing an angularly disposed flat spring 44 held by the rivets 45, the front end 46, of which is attached to a plate or strip of igniting material 48, the same being registrable with the head of the match as it is pressed outwardly by operating the slide 35, the igniting material being contained in an appropriate recess 49, formed at the front end and at one side of the body 15.
In operation, the space 18, having been filled with the matches, and the cover 25, closed thereover, the matches are securely retained therein. When it is desired to use the same, the knob 36 is grasped by the fingers and extended to its full limit, the box manipulated so that one of the matches will drop into the groove 33, whereupon the slide 35 is pressed inwardly, causing the match to be extended through the opening 41, and coming in contact with the igniting surface 48, is presented in an ignited condition ready for immediate use.
Obviously the box can readily be refilled by raising the cover 25, and it will be equally evident that the structure may be readily carried in the pocket without difficulty.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a match box, the combination with a body member having an opening adapted to contain matches, a cover for said opening, the said body member having an aperture therein for the passage of a match, a plun-' ger slidable on the end of the body for forcing a match through the said opening from the interior to the exterior of the said body, said plunger comprising a member having slots, means extending through one of the slots and anchored to the body mem- I ger slidable on the'end of the body for forcing a match through thevsaid opening from the interior to the exterior of the said body, said plunger comprising a member having slots, meansextending through one of the slots and anchored tothe body member for guiding the plunger, aplate having a flanged portion extending into the Gopies,of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, 'by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
-a removable cover, said body having an inclined bottom, a plate in the said bottom having a flange, a plunger slidable under the plate and having a slot to receive the flange of the plate, said plunger being movable through an opening in an end ofthe receptacle, the opposite end of the receptacle having a match exit opening, one wall of which is stationary, an igniting material,
and means for yieldinglyholding the igniting material in relation to the stationary wall, whereby a match engaged by the plunger and forced through the opening Will be frictionally engaged by thesaid igniting material.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature.
