Patented Mar. 18, 1919 Application filed November 1c. 1918. Serial No. 262,834.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Mmn KACZMARYK, a subject of the Emperor of Austria, having declared his'intention to become a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Glen Carbon, in the county oil/Schuylkill and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Bayonets and Wire-Cutters, of which the followin is a specification.
This invention re ates to certain new and useful improvements-in combined bayonets and wire cutters and'has among its objects the provision of this ty e of device which shall be extremely dural le in: plan of construction and capable of being easily and cheaply manufactured.
A further object of theginvention is the provision of a wire cutting means on a.
bayonet, one connecting edge of the wire cutter being constituted by awprojecting inclined portion of the bayonet. blade.
A "Stll'l further dbject of the'invention is to provide a novel form of. shield or guard for the cutting members 'of the wire cutter, the guard being so constructed and arranged asto prevent lateral movement of i the movable cutting member of the wire cutter relative to the stationary member thereof so as to insure proper cutting relation between the cutting blades at all times. With the'above general objects in view and others that will become apparent as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the noval form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views,
Fi re 1 is a side elevation of a portion I of a ayonet and wire cutter constructed in accordance with the present invention and illustrating the device as it appears when viewed from one side thereof.
Fig. 2 is'a front elevation of the device shown in Fig. 1.
Fig.- 3 is a view similar to thatshown in Fig. 1 looking at the opposite side of the device.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentarydetail view of the invention )partly in side elevation and partly in longitudinal section and Fig. 5 is a plan view of the guard as it appears before being bent into operative relation with thebayonet and wire cutter. Referring more in detail to the several views, the present invention contemplates the provision of a bayonet including a blade 5 and a tang 6, said tang having handle formin members 7 secured to opposite sidm t ereof by means of rivets 8 or the like.
The blade 5 is provided at one edge at a point adjacent the connection of the same with the tang 6, with a lateral extension forming a rearwardly and outwardly inclined cutting edge 9 and a shoulder 10, said shoulder extending transversely of the longitudinal axis of the blade 5' and forming in conjunction with theshoulder 11 an abutment against which the pommel 12 is rigidly secured when the handle members 7 are operatively disposed. The pommel 12 may be provided-with a suitable opening 13 for reception of the barrel 14 1n the usual manner as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1.
Pivotally attached to the blade 5 by means of a pin 15 at a point forwardly of the pommel 12 is a cutter member including a handle 16, of curved form as shown in Fig. 1 which extends rearwardly through the slot 17 provided in the pommel 12 at that side opposite the opening 13. The pivoted cutter which is provided with a handle 16 is curved outwardly into a somewhat hook-' spring being arranged to bear against the side wall 23 of the recess 19 as shown more clearly in Fig. 4:. By this means, the pivoted cutter is normally maintained with its cutting edge 18 spaced from the cutting edge 9 and with its handle 16' in spaced relation to the handle of the bayonet formed by the tang 6 and handle members 7. It isnoted that the spring 20 occupies a position between the blade 5 and the pivoted cutter member and is therefore efleotively shielded against being damaged and is entirely obscured from view when the parts are operatively disposed.
In order to shield the ,pivoted cutter member and to rigidly maintain the same against lateral movement so as to insure proper cutting relation between the edges 9 and 18 at all times, I provide a guard 24 which is stamped from a single piece of sheet metal in the form more clearly shown in Fig. 5. The guard 24 includes a back portion 25 which flatly engages the rear face of that portion of the pommel 12 which is provided with .the slot 17 and said back portion 25 is cut away as at 26 to rest upon one edge of the handle of the bayonet and is further cut away as at 27 to provide a clearance space through which the handle 16 of the movable cutter member extends, thus allowing movement of the handle 16 toward and away from the handle of the bayonet for the required limited distance. Integral with the back portion 25 is a side portion 28 which is bent upon the line 29 to extend forwardly from the back portion 25 at right angles. thereto to flatly engage the outer side face of the pivoted cutter member as more clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The side portion 28 is provided with apertures 30 for reception of screws 31 which enter the adjacent edge of the pommel 12 to secure the guard in position while an additional opening 32 is provided in the side member 28 for reception of the pin 15 whose 'head' 33 engages the side member 28 to additionally serve to secure the guard member in position. Extending from the opposite edge of the back member 25 and integral therewith is an extension 34 which is secured flatly against the opposite ed-ge of the pommel 12 by means. of screws 35 which enter the apertures 36. The extension 34 has another extension 37 integral therewith which is bent upon the line 38 to flatly engage the adjacent portion of the forward face of the pommel 12 and a second side member 39 which is integral with the extension 37 is bent upon the line' 40 at a right angle to extend forwardly parallel with the side member 28, said side member 39 being flatly positioned against the adjacent side face of the blade 5 as more clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
' The side member 39 is apertured as at 41 tongues 44 and 45 which lie at oppositefor reception of the other end 42 of the pin 15. The extension 37 and side member 39 together are 'of substantially the same form as the sidemember 28 and are each cut away as at 43 to allow free entrance of a wire between the cutting edges 9 and 18. The cutting away of the side members 28 and 39 is productive-of a pair of parallel sides of that portion of the pivoted cutter member which is provided with the cutting edge 18 and in order to rigidly connect these tongues, an extension 46 is provided on the tongue 44 to be bent at right angles to the latter upon the line 47 so as to bridge the space between the tongues 44 and 45 as shown more clearly in Fig. 2. The extension 46 is provided with a plurality of spaced tongues 48 upon the free edge thereof arranged to be directed through the slots 49 in the tongue 45 and then bent downwardly as more clearly shown in Fig. 3 so as to retain the tongues 44 and 45 against separation or other relative movement.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that the present invention provides an extremely practical form of combined wire cutter and bayonet in which one edge of the wire cutter may be practically formed on an integralla'teral extension of" the usual bayonet blade.
It will further be seen that the form of guard utilized; may
be cheaply manufactured and easilyan'd quickly stamped from sheet metal as well as quickly secured in its operative position relative to the remaining parts of the device said guard being capable of shielding the pivoted cutter member against ready damage and also being effective in retain--' ing the pivoted cutter member against lateral movement to an undue extent so as to thereby insure proper cutting relation between the stationary and movable cutting edges.
It is believed that the construction and operation as well as the advantages of the present invention will be readily understood by those skilled in the art from the foregoing. description and, while the form of the invention herein shown and described is what is believed to be the preferable embodiment thereof, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made in the form,- combination and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What I claim as new is 1. In combination with a bayonet provided with a handle, a blade, and a pommel, said blade having a lateral extension upon one edge thereof adjacent the pommel forming an outwardly and rearwardly inclined cutting edge, a cutter member pivoted to said blade forwardly of said pommel and having a handle extended through said pommel to a point adjacent the handle of the bayonet, a cutting edge upon the pivo'ted cuttin member outwardly of said inclined cutting edge and a one-piece sheet metal guard member bent to embrace the pommel, the bayonet blade and the pivoted cutter member tovshield, the latter and retain the same against lateral movement relative to the bayonet blade.
2. A combined bayonet and wire cutter lblade provided with a handle and a pommel, said blade having a lateral extension upon one edge thereof forming an outwardly and rearwardly inclined cutter edge, a cutter member pivoted to the bayonet blade forwardly of said pommel and provided with a handle extending through the pommel to a point adjacent the bayonet handle, said cutter member being curved outwardly and rearwardly and provided with an inner cutting edge normally lying substantially parallel w1th the inclined cutting edge of the bayonet blad'e extension, said bayonet blade and extension being provided with a recess in one face including a thereof, a spring arranged in said recess ivoted cutter mem-- and connected to said p ber to normally maintaln the same with its cutting edge separated from the cutting edge of the bayonet blade extension.
3. A combined bayonet and wirecutter including a blade provided with a pommel and a handle, said blade being provided with an inclined cutting edge adjacent said pommel, a pivoted cutter member carried by the blade forwardly of said pommel and provided with a handle extending rearwardly through said pommel to a point adjacent the first named handle, said cutter member including an outwardly. and rearwardly directed cutting blade, and a onepiece sheet metal guard secured to said pommel and provided with a pair of tongues arranged in parallel spaced relation at opposite sides of the blade of the pivoted cutter 'member, said guard including means to rigidly connect said tongues.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
