DRAFT-TONGUE EXTENSION.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALVAN FIELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Aline, in the county of Alfalfa and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Draft-Tongue Extensions, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in attachments for draft tongues to extend the same at the forward end to provide for the increased space required when a double team-or four horses are employed.

Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be readily adapted without material structural change to draft tongues of various forms and sizes, and without structural change in the draft tongue.

WVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims; and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention Figure 1 is a plan view of a draft tongue with the swingle trees and evener devices for four horses attached and with the improvement applied to the forward end of the tongue.

The draft tongue is represented as a whole at 10 and is provided with the usual depending neck yoke stop 11 spaced from the forward end. The ordinary tongue is provided with a strap 12 attached to its upper and lower faces and projecting in advance of the end of the tongue into a loop represented at 13. When two horses are applied to the double tree and a single pair of the swingle trees, the distance between the double tree and the yoke neck stop 11 corresponds to the horses, and when four horses are to be employed and a draft beam represented at 14; is used in addition to the usual double tree 15, the swingle trees represented at 16 are moved forwardly a considerable distance, consequently the ordinary neck yoke stop is too near to the swingle trees to receive the neck yoke, and

the object of the present invention is to provide an extension to the forward end of the tongue having a supplemental neck yoke stop, so that the neck yoke of the teams will be at the proper distance from the swingle trees. When the double team or four horses are employed the neck yoke devices usually occupy morespace than the single neck yoke, consequently the extension will likewise be of greater length than the advanced position of the swingle trees. The improved attachment includes a supplemental tongue or block member 17 preferably substantially of the same size transversely as the main tongue 10. Attached to the upper and lower faces of the member 17 is a strap 18 extending over the forward end of the block and rearwardly of the same, the rearwardly extending portion being projected upwardly and rearwardly in an oblique direction as represented at 19 and thence horizontally as represented at 20, the oblique portion extending between the loop 13 of the tongue and the rear end of the block 17, and the horizontal portion 20 bearing over the upper side of the strap 12. The lower portion of the strap 18 is extended downwardly to form a neck yoke stop 21 corresponding to the stop 11 of the tongue. A U-shaped strap represented as a whole at 22 bears against the side faces of the block 17 with its forward end curved to form a loop 23 similar to the loop 13 of the tongue. The side portions of the strap 22 extend rearwardly of the block for a considerable distance and are designed to bear against the side faces of the forward portion of the tongue 10. At their rear ends the side members of the strap 22 are coupled by a strap 24 bearin over the upper side of the tongue 10, and lfirewise coupled intermediate their ends by a downwardly directed strap 25. The strap 24 operates to prevent downward displacement of the side members 22 at the rear ends while the strap 25 prevents upward displacement of the attachment. The strap 25 as noted by reference to Fig. 2 bears against the neck yoke stop 11 of the tongue and thus prevents rearward movement of the attachment. The overhanging portion 20 of the strap 18 hearing upon the upper face of the tongue effectually prevents downward displacement of the attachment. The rearwardly extended side members of the strap 22 closely engage the sides of the tongue 10, and the whole attachment is held by friction only in position. It will be noted by this arrangement that the attachment is held from rearward movement and vertical and lateral movement, but is held by friction only from forward movement. Frictional engagement between the attachment and thet'ongue is-sufficient to prevent forward displacement, as the strains when the device is in use are rearwardly only as innithe case of the ordinaryneck yoke.

The improved device is simple in construction, can be inexpensively manufactured, and operates effectually to provide an extension for the draft tongue when required.

.Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

1. An attachment for draft tongues comprising a body, a strap includingva portion engaging beneath said body and extended obliquely and thence parallel to the longitudinal plane of the same, straps engaging the-sidefaces of the-body and extending in spaced relation rearwardly thereof, an upwardly directed loop connecting said spaced strap members at their free ends, and a downwardly directed loop connecting said spaced strap members intermediate their extended portions, said body being adapted to be disposed in advance of a draft' tongue with the straps and loops bearing over the same.

2. An attachment for draft tongues comprising'a body having-means for support- Gopieslof this patent may be obtained for member extending obliquely and thence longitudinally of the body andbetween the spaced straps, said body being adapted to be disposed in advance of a draft tongue with the straps and loops beari 0 over the same and the intermediate loop a apted to engage the neck yoke stop of the draft tongue.

3. An attachment for draft tongues comprising a supplemental tongue of substantially the same size transverselyas'the main tongue and adapted to be disposed in advance of the main tongue, saidsupplemental tongue being freely separable from the main tongue and provided with a dependingneck yoke stop and spaced longitudinal arms adapted to embrace the main draft tongue.

4. The combination with a draft tongue including a neck yoke stop, of an extension engaging the end of the draftgtongue-and freely separable therefrom, said extension forming a continuation of the draft tongue and being provided with a supplemental neck yoke stop.

5. The combination with a draft tongue of a supplemental tongue of substantially the same size transversely as the main tongue fitting over the endvof vthe main tongue and freely separable therefrom, said supplementaltongue being disposed in 1on gitudinal alinement withrthe draft tongue and provided with a depending neck yoke stop, and means carried by thesupplemental tongue engaging the walls of the main draft tongue for reventing accidental displacement of said supplemental tongue.
