The-presentinvention relatesto new and useful improvementsfinsafes, and is more particularly directed to the provision 'ofwall safes and other light and small: types of safes :adaptedforusegin residences.
One important object of the present invention is to provide. a fire proong means for safesv adapted in operation tofdispose entirely about` a safe, whereby. all parts thereof are protected' and wherein under normal conditions the fronto thesafe is relieved ofthe presence of fire :proofing substance. whereby an undesired cumbersome nature of the door portion of the safe is avoided.
Another important-obj ect of the invention resideswin theI provision of a household safe whichv is adapted to seat Within a suitable support means, and whereinaccess to the securing means of thesafe to the support is controlled by the. door of the safe, to preventundesired bodily removal ofthe-safe.
A further object ofl the inventionresides in the provision of a wall safe which is adapted to be disposed between and secured to a pair of adjoiningwall joists, it being more particularly an object in this connection to provide such` a wall safe whichmay be properly secured in position with a minimum amount of work.
A further ob-ject residesin the. provision in a safeof relatively light type, of means for economically forming the body of the safe, amore specific object in this connection being the provision of an arrangement whereby securing means ofthe inner casing to the main body plate of the safe serves as a support for shelves within the inner casing of thesafe.
With the above and otherobjectsand. advantages in view the-invention resid'es more particularlyv in the novel combination arrangement and formation of parts more particularly hereinafter described and pointed out in the appended claims.

I teferringrk now more particularly to the accompanyingdrawings, the parti-cular embodiment of our invention illustrateditherein comprises va wall safe formedfof a body plate 5 and an: innervcasingv 6 comprising a rear wall and top, bottom and side walls4 having their front edges engaged and welded in grooves 7 at the rearfface of the body plate, the casing being. during its manufactureand prior to the welding operation, initially securedf with respect to the body plate by screws 8 passed through the side edge portion of the/rear wall andthreadedly engaged with-the plate, and. these ,screws are retained inthe safe to serve as supports for suitable shelveswithin themain compartment of: the safe, which is formedfby the casing 6, the welding of the edges ofthe walls of the lcasing in the grooves procuring a practically integnal structure. Disposed about the*- inner casing, to form a jacket in conjunction therewithy is an louter casing 9, and this outer casing is secured to the body-plate by screws 10 and by welding the otherwise free edges of its walls in grooves 11 formed at the rear face of the body plate.
It is noted that the width of the outer casing 9 is slightly less than the distance between anadjacent pair of wall joists 12 as illustrated in Fig. 1 and the edges ofthe body plate 5 extend outwardly of the casingA and carry at their extremities a rearwardly projected flange 13 which is adapted to engage the supporting wall at portions spaced outwardly from the openingfformedtherein to receive Vthe bodjq ofv the safe, the said iange serving to shield any marring of the wall sustained in forming the safe receiving opening therein.
Between the outer casing and the flange 13 the side walls of the body plate arev provided with series of sockets 14 and screws or othervsecuring means'l' are passed through the bottoms of these sockets and engage in the joists 12. l

The edge portions of the plate are provided with ribs 17 iitting in grooves 18 in the door. The edge portions of the body plate 5 are also provided with a rectangular flange 19 projecting into the odset of the door. The locking means of the'safe comprises a lock 20 -preferably of a conventional cylindrical type which is tted within an inwardly projected sleeve 21 carried by the door, and the inner `projected end of this lock carries a gear pinion 22 meshing with rack teeth on adjacent portions'of a pair of lock bars 231'held for vertical sliding guide plate 24: secured on the end of the sleeve 21, these bars being adapted to project through openings 25 in the'flange 19 to lock the door. Y The door 16 thus controls access to the screws 15 which secure the safe to the wall, andfconsequently unauthorized bodily removal of the safe is prevented. Y
Access to the main chamber of the safe bounded by the innercasing 6 is had through an vopening in the body wall, and a door26 is hinged to the body wall for closing this opening and is provided preferably with a snap lock 27 of conventional type. The jacket formed by the inner and outer casing islled with a'suitable lire proofing fluid which may comprise merely an inert insulator may comprise material adapted to produce gas under high pressure whereby the escape of such gas will produce a cooling effect on the safe.
To provide for the admission of this fluid to the chamber at the front of the safe formed by the body plate and the door body 16, when excessive-heat exists, the body plate between the jacket and said chamber is provided with a series of apertures 28 normally Y closed-by fusible plugs 29. Thus the chamber at the front of the safe is normally empty to permit ready manipulation of the Y door of the safe, but should fire occur, the
iuidvwill enter this front chamber and the main chamber of the safe will be thus entirely surrounded by fluid. It is also noted that the only support of the inner casing 6 is at the body wall 5, and thus a, minimum amount of heat will be conveyed to the main chamber of the safe by conduction.
While the present safe structure is designed particularly for use as `a wall safe in residences, it is obvious that this feature of introducing a fire proofing fluid to the chamber at the front of the safe upon the occurrence of heat, is vapplicable to all types of lfor closing said passages.
