To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELMER T. LUTZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Burning Appliances, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to gas burners for furnaces, stoves and the like and has for its object to produce an efficient burner by which an increase or decrease in the supply of gas is attended by a proportionate increase or curtailment in the supply of air for mixture with the gas, and by which the .flame shall be distributed in a thin sheet of substantially semi-circular contour and so directed that it shall impinge upon "the wall of the fire pot of a furnace, for example, above the plane of the fuel door, and thus-be susceptible of use conjointly with or independently of a bed of coal within the furnace.
Another object is to produce a gas burner of the type outlined, which can be quickly and'easily placed in or removed from operative position ina furnace or the like, and
which is of simple, strong, durable and inexpensive construction.
With these objects in view the invention consists in certain novel and useful features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter described and claimed; and in order that it may be fully understood, reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing in which:

Fig. 3 is a front view with the mixing tube and burner head omitted.
In the said drawing 1 indicates a gas supply pipe adapted to lead to a point adjacent to or within a furnace, stove or the like, and if within the same preferably through the fuel door opening thereof, and screwed upon the upper end of said pipe and disposed to discharge into the fire pot or combustion chamber of the furnace is a casing 2, provided with a gas chamber 3 in communication with the supply pipe, the casing being provided at its front end with a nozzle 4, the passage of which is flared at its rear end to constitute a valve seat 5.
Rearward of said chamber and longitudinally alined with the passage of the nozzle is a threaded bore or passage 6 engaged by a threaded needle valve 7 for engagement with the valve seat 5 to control or entirely close the nozzle to the passage of gas, said needle valve being equipped with :a handle 8 and at a point intermediate with respect to the casing and the handle, with a collar 9 and a removable cross pin 10, for a purpose which hereinafter appears.

By this arrangement it is obvious that forward-adjustmentof-the needle --valve will, through the pin 10, effect corresponding movement of the damper on the nozzle, and that reverse movement of the needle valve will likewise effect withdrawal movement of the damper on the nozzle.
The front end of the nozzle is threaded at 16 for engagement with the threaded opening in a perforated cross piece or partition 17 in the flaring mouth of a mixing tube 18, which mixing tube terminates at its front end in a flattenedcircular burner head 19, provided in its peripheral portion with a semi-circular flame slot or orifice 20, which is narrowest at its center and gradually increases in width at its ends.
In the preferred construction this nozzle will extend obliquely upward and forward from the mixing tube at an angle of approximately forty-five degrees, as shown, and the flame produced by said burner head in operation will be thin and of substantially'semicircular contour, the expansion in the width of the .slot toward the ends of the same serving to effect a wider distribution of the flame than would be possible if the slot was of uniform width, owing to the fact that the pressure in the mixing tube would tend to discharge the gas to a greater distance directly forward and upward than laterally,
as will be readily understood.
This burner is of the Bunsen type, that V is to say, when the valve is open and the gas into the mixing tube, it creates a suction which draws a supply of air into the mixin tube through the mouth or rear end thereo and it will be noted that through the conjoint like adjustment of the valve and damper, an increase or decrease in the supply of gas is attended by a proportionate increase or decrease in the supply of air, and that when the gas is cut ofl' the damper is almost in contact with and closing the mouth of the mixing tube. i
' It will be apparent that the mixing tube can-be turned or rotatably adjusted within reasonable limits to point the flame more di-' rectly toward one side or the other of the fire pot, and that the casing 2 may likewise be rotated upon the supply pipe to point the mixing tube toward the center or to one side or the other-of the center of the fire pot of the furnace.

From the above description it will be apparent that I have produced a gas burner is discharged forwardly through the nozzle h embodying the features of advantage enumerated as desirable and which is suscepti- V ble of modification in minor particulars without departing from the principle of construction involved or sacrificing any of the advantages of the appended claim;
I claim:
In a gas burner, a casing having a gas receiving chamber, an alined bore and nozzle communicating respectively at their front and rear ends with said chamber, the nozzle having a valve seat at its rear end, a needle valve adjustable in said bore and adapted for engagement with said valve seat 'to close or control the passage of the nozzle, a mixing tube communicating withthe nozzle and providedwith a vburner head, a damper, a
frame secured to thedamper and engaging the needle valve, and means attached to the latter to engage the frame and impart forward or rearward movement thereto accord ingly as the needle valve is advanced or withdrawn with respect to the valve seat.
