To all whom it may concern:
Be it lmown that I, JosEPH A. SIMMs, citizen of the United States, residin at De tro1t, countyof Wayne, State of ichigan, have lnv'ented a certain new and useful Improvement in Motors, and declare the followin to be a full, clear, and exact descrlptlon of the same, suchas will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relatesto acombined inter- .nal combustion engine and steam engine; the construction being such that the heat from the exhaust gases and also the radiation re-' sulting from the operation of the internal combustion cylinder, or cylinders, is utilized to generate steam for delivery to the cylin de'r of the steam engine,the pistons of the respective cylinders bein adaptedto act upon the same crank-shai t.
It is well known in this art that the ther- .m'al efliciency of the average gasolene or kerosene. engme is only about 27% and that the other 73% is .lost. The most eflicient engine known at present shows a thermal efiiciency of 38%,; but owing to high compression,approx1mately 500. pounds per square inch,this type of engine isnecessarily of very heavy construction and therefore impracticable for aeronautic purposes- It is t ereforeone of the objects of this invention to rovide. an economical motive power especlally applicable to air vehicles.
A further object of 'this invention is the elimination of the usual starting devices, the reversing gear with its resulting weight, by the em oyment of a steam engine forming part 0 the power unit and whereby the motor may be started and itsv operation reversed.
A further object is to provide for the operation of this device independent of the operation of the internal combustion engine, whereby n an emergency the steam side of .ment of the invention. herein described with- -out departing from the spirit of the same.
