To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JAMES C. 'HIoKEY:
and OLIVER J. CANTRELLE, citizens of the United States, and residents of New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans'and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements'in Trucks, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention is an improvement in trucks, and has for .its object to' provide mechanism for use in connection with the usual freight truck, either hand or motor load automatically.

The present embodiment of the invention is shown in connection with a truck consisting of a body 1 and the usual wheels 2, connected to the body by the bolsters 3, andthe improvement comprises a pair of handle members 4 connected by cross plates 5, the lower ends of the handle members being curved forwardly at an obtuse angle to the body, as indicated at 6, to provide a support for the articles to be stacked, as, for instance, material. in bags.
As is known, much time is required in transporting packaged stuff, as, for instance, grain in bags, where it is essential to handle the same piece by piece both in loading and unloading. With the present invention the necessity forhandling'the bags or packages separately in unloading is eliminated. The bags are supported by the portions 6 of the handle members, upon plates 7 which are arranged upon the portions 6. cured to a shaft 14which is journaled in standards 16 on the body 1 of the main truck. Each of these levers has at its rear end=a downwardly ofiset portion 17, and a link 18 connects each of these portions 17 with a substantially Ushaped bracket 19 secured to the adjacent handle member near its upper end. Thus whenthe levers are swung upon the standard 16 the elements 4, 5 and 18 will swing therewith, taking the dotted line position of Fig. 2, wherein the wheels 9 contact with the supporting surface for the truck.
A counterweight 20 is mounted upon each lever, for'normally balancing the attachment to hold it in the full line position of Fig. 2, and the levers are prevented from swinging when the attachment is loaded by means of a. dog 21 arranged adjacent to one lever and pivoted to a lug 22 on the body of the truck. A latch lever 23 is also pivoted to this lug, and the forwardly up curled end of the latch lever engages the dog to lift thesame when the rear end of the latch lever is depressed.
Referring to Fig. 2, it will be noticed that the curve of the latch lever engages a curved portion of the latch, to prevent the latch swinging when the latch lever is in the normal position of Fig. 2. The latch lever is operated by means of a lever 24 which is pivoted to a bracket 25 on the truck body and the lever is connected to the latch lever by a link 26. To release the latch, it is only necessary to swing the lever 24 rearwardly. This lifts the latch and releases the truck attachment so that it can swing into the dotted line position of Fig. 2. A guard 27 is provided for the lever 24, the guard being secured to the truck body, as shown.
In operation, when the bags or other packaged goods are loaded in superposed relation upon the plates 7, with the parts in the full line position of Fig. 2, the attachment will be held in such position under the weight of the material by the latch 21. When it is desired to dump the load, the
lever 24 is moved rearwardly, causing the proved attachment may be applied to any existing truck, whether hand operated or power operated.
We claim:
1. In combination with a truck, of: an attachment comprising a pair of laterally spaced rigidly connected handle members, each having at the lower end a portion extending at an obtuse angle to the body of the handle member, depending lugs at the connection of the body portions with the late-rally bent portions, a wheel journaled in each lug, levers pivoted to the truck and rigidly connected at their outer ends to the handle members near the laterally bent portions, a rigid connection between the other end of each handle member and the adjacent lever, a latch for normally prevent- 111g swinging of the lever, means for releasing the latch, and a counterbalance in connection with the levers.
2. In combination with a truck, of an attachment comprising a pair of laterally spaced rigidly connected handle members, each having at the lower end a portion extending at an obtuse angle to the body of the handle member, depending legs at the connection of the. body portions with the laterally bent portions, a wheel journaled in each leg, levers pivoted to the truck and rigidly connected at their outer ends to the handle members near the laterally bent portions, a rigid connection between the other end of each handle member and the adjacent lever, a latch for normally preventing swinging of the lever, and means for releasing the latch.
3. In combination with a truck, of an attachment comprising spaced rigidly connected handle members having angular portions at the lower ends for supporting a pile of packaged material, levers pivoted to the truck and connected to the handle members, a latch for preventing swinging movement of the levers and manually operated means for releasing the latch, and a counterweight adjustable on the levers for balancing the attachment.
l. In combination with a truck, of an attachment comprising spaced rigidly connected handle members having angular portions at the lower ends for supporting a pile of packaged material, levers pivoted to the truck and connected to the handle members, and a latch for preventing swinging movement of the levers and manually operated means for releasing the latch.
