TOILET FOR RAILWAY-CARS.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Mar. 11, 1919.
Application filed January '19, 191$. Serial No. 212,656.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY P. GoNsoU LAND, a citizen of the United States, resid-- ing at Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in loilets for Railway-Cars; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a toilet device particularly designed for use upon portable cars, such as railway passenger cars, interurban street cars, street railway cars, or. automobiles, and the primary object of the shaft and the trap door of a passenger railway car whereby the-shaft can not be rocked for moving the receptacle closure into an open position when the trap door is raised for permitting passengers to alight from thecar or enter the car.
A further object of this invention is to.
provide a valve structure which is positioned within the'receptacle, near its upper end for closing the opening between the bowl and the receptacle to hide from' view the contents of the receptacle which valve mechanism includes means operableunder the weight of a person sitting upon the bowl to open the valve structure to move the closure member out of the pathof the communicating opening between the bowl and the receptacle.
With the foregoing and otherobjects in View, this invention consists in such novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described,illustrated(in the accompanying drawings and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail, ref- 7 erence will be had to the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters are used om and furtherto provide means connecting the rockable to designate like and corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which:
Figure l is a fragmentary View of a rail way passenger car showing the invention applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view illustrating the receptacle and looking at the same from a point at right angles to the illustration of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional view through the upper portion of the receptacle showing the improved valve which is posi-' tioned therein.
Fig. 4: is a sectional view through the receptacle illustrating the improved valve, in end elevation and illustrating in section a fragment of the car floor and the ordinary bowl.
Fig. 5 is a horizontal section taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 indicates a fragment of an ordinary railway passenger car having a floor 2 and a trap door .3 which is lowered when the car is in motion over the steps 4 and which trap door is raised, when the car stops at a station, to permit passengers to board or alight from the car.
The improved toilet device is positioned in the car in the usual place and it includes a bowl 5 of the usual construction having a hinged wooden seat 6. The bowl 5 empties through an openin 6" in the floor 2 of the car into a receptac e 7. The receptacle 7 is attached to the under surface of the floor 2 in any suitable manner and it has a dispensing or outlet opening '8 formed in the center'of the bottom thereof. The opening 8 is normally closed by a closure structure 9, comprising a plate 10 having a rubber gasket 11 carried thereby, the upper surface shaft 13. The rock shaft 13 is rockably supported bysu'itable' hangers 14 which depend meme? from the under surface of the bottom 2 of the car. The rock shaft 13 has a collar 15 mounted thereon from which extends radially a pair of arms 16 and 17. The arm 17 has a counterbalancing weight 18 mounted thereon for moving the closure structure 9 into a closing position. The arm 16 has a hand lever 20 connected thereto by pin 21 which extends through a slot 22 formed in the lower end of the lever, When the hand lever 20 is rocked, it will rock the rock shaft 13 and move the closure members 9 either into an open or closed position.
A staple or eye 23 is attached to the lever 20 near its lower end, and a chain 21 is connected to the eye 23 and to the trap 3. as shown at 25, so that when the trap door 3 is in a raised position, the chain 2& will be held taut for preventing pivotal movement of the lever 20 and consequently locking movement of the rock shaft 13, thereby preventing the moving of the do sure member 9 into an open position when the car 1 is at a station.
A pipe 26 has communication with a bowl 5 and with a water tank for flushing the bowl. The pipe 26 has an extension 27 formed thereon upon the upper end of which a spigot 28 is mounted which controls the flow of ,water into a. wash basin 29. The discharge from the wash basin 29 is through a pipe 30 into the bowl 5 so that the refuse water from the bowl 29 will pass into the bowl 5, through this bowl into the receptacle 7 where it will be retained until the lever 20 is moved for rocking the shaft 13 to move the closure member 9 into an open position.
The plate 4:0 is positioned within the receptacle T at the upper end of the same and the plate is adjustably connected to the receptacle by neans of depending ears el-l which are arranged in pairs and formed upon the plate 40 and bolts which extend through the receptacle 7 between each facing pair of the ears 41.
A pair of angled brackets 43 are attached to the inner surface of the receptacle 7 and they have valve members 14: and 45 pivotally connected thereto. The valve members 4A and 45 are formed in sections of a sphere, and the edge of the valve member as: is bent to overlap the meeting edge of the valve member 15, as shown at 46. The valve members E1 and 15 are connected through the medium of suitable fastening members 17 to. a hinge structure 1-8 which hinge structure is in turn pivotally connected by means of pins 49 to the angled. brackets 43. The hinge 18, which is positioned at one end of the valve member, has a pair of pins 50 and 51 carried thereby which ride in slots 52 and The slots 52 and 53 are formed angularly in an upstanding plate 54:, which plate is attached to a substantially semi-circular metal band 1 The band is pivotally conthe plate 40 and through an opening 63 formed in the floor 2 and its upper end is positioned in engagement with the under surface of the hinged seat (3 so that when a person sits upon the hinged seat, the
weight of the person will move the seat downwardly into engagement with the up per end of the bowl 5 and force the rod 61 downwardly which will rock the substantially circular iron 55 upon its pivot and move the plate 5: downwardly, causing the pins 50 and 51 to ride upwardly in the slots 52 and 53 and rockthe valve members 4% and 45 upon their pivotal supports, moving the valve members into open position, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. at of the drawings, and will move them out of the path of the opening 6 so as to permit material to pass from the bowl 5 into the receptacle 7. The slots 57 are provided to permit of the necessary movement of the substantially circular ring to allow for the vertical movement of the plate 54;. and to prevent binding of the pins 50 and 51 in the slots and 53, respectively. The substantially circular bar 55 has weights 63 attached to the ends thereof which will move the substantially circular member 55 into its normal position, forcing the rod 61 upwardly and slightly raising the seat 6, when the person arises from the seat. The movement of the circular member 55 to its normal position will move the pins 50 and 51 downwardly in the slots 52 and 53 which will move the valve members ate and 4:5 into. a closed position, as illustrated in solid line in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings the advantages of construction and the method of operation of the improved toilet for railway cars will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains and, while in the foregoing description, the principle of the operation of this invention has been described together with various features of construction, it is to be understood that certain minor features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be altered to suit practical conditions provided such alterations are comprehended within the scope of what is claimed.
What is claimed is:
1. In a device as set forth, the combination, of a water closet bowl, a wash basin,
a refuse receptacle for receiving material from said bowl, and a waste water pipe communicating with said basin and said bowl near the top of thebowl.
2. The combination with a railway car including a step protecting trap door, of a water closet bowl, a refuse receptacle for receiving material from said bowl having an outlet opening, a hinged closure for said opening, a lever for operating said closure, means connecting said lever and said trap door to prevent the opening of said closure when said trap door is in a raised position,
a wash basin, a waste water pipe communl eating with said basin and said bowl near the top of the bowl.
3. In a device as set forth, the combination,of a water closet bowl, a refuse receptacle for receiving material from said bowl, a pair of valve members pivotally connected to the interior of said receptacle and normally closing the communicating opening between said bowl and refuse receptacle, a curved bar rockably supported Within said receptacle, a rod connected to said rockable bar and to the seat of said closet bowl, whereby the rod will be moved downwardly under the weight of a person sitting upon the closet bowl to rock said rockable bar, and means connecting said bar and said bar and to the seat of said closet bowl,
whereby the rod will be moved downwardly under the weight of a person sitting upon the closet bowl to rock said rockable bar, and means connecting said bar and said valve members for moving the valve members into an open position upon downward movement of said rod, weights attached to saidrrockable bar for returning the bar to its normal position and moving said valves into a closing position when the person arises from the bowl seat.
