To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED FANDREI, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sturgeon Bay, in the county vof Door and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and' useful Improvements in Scoops, of which the following is a specification.
The invention has for an object to effect improvements in scoops for use in dredges and excavating devices, the specic embodiment shown herein beingv adapted to use in excavating, and for the handling of manure, straw and the like, in lifting the same -from a bank or dump, and depositing it upon a carrier or otherwise. It is a particular aim of the invention'to effect improvements 1n the means whereby an excavating .unit of the clam shell type may be improved in construction and function, and I aim to improve the mounting of the opposed elements of, such a device whereby a minimumcf power will be required for its operation. A further aim is to improve the manner of attaching teeth elements to such `devices and to adjust the teeth to compensate for wear. A further aim is to effect an improvement Vin the construction of the bucket elements,
as receptacles, making them adapt-able to handle s'uch material as gravel, sand and earth, or straw and manure, without involving structural modifications of the device, or removal of parts. p
Additional objects, advantages and features of invention may appear from the construction, arrangement, and, combination of parts hereinafter described, and shown in the drawings, wherein,

There is illustrated an excavator device including shell or bucket elements 10 and 11 which may be carried byany desired form of hoist, and in the present instance are illustrated as supportedby a boom element 12, the outer extremity only of which is. shown. At the extremity of the boom element'a frame piece 13 is secured, havingy a substantially U-'shaped portion with arms extended downwardly, their lower ends being bent outwardly. Upon the frame piece there are secured plates 15, having at each end apertured ears 16 in which there are pivoted hangers 17, the lower ends of which are suitably engaged with clearing bails 18 extended around the inner sides of respective bucket elements 19, which include side portions 20 cutaway at their outer opposed edge portions as shown at 21, to form a large clear way through the bucket from side to side, and an intermediate bottom wall portion 22 formed integrally therewith, or otherwise, as mayv be preferred, in the form of a segment of a cylinder, the portions 22 of the opposed bucket elements being adapted to meet snugly at their opposed edges when in abutment, to completely close the lower part of the buckets, at times. The sides 19 of the bucket elements are extended upwardly a considerable distance above the lower ends of the hangers 17 as shown in Fig. l, and at their uppermost parts are provided with respective meshed gear segments 23 at each side, suitably fixed to the bucket elements and upon shafts 23 in respective bucket elements, these shafts hav-v ing operating arms 24 and 25, respe .tively, the first mentioned arm being upon the outermost shaft with respect to the beam 12, and being extended diagonally upwardly and outwardly when the bucket is in closed positlon, whilethe one 25 is extended inwardly, nearly horizontal or at a suitable angle tothe arm 24 for the functions to be described. A cable 26 is suitablyanchored upon the arm 25, and extended outwardly I around' a pulley 27 at the extremity of the arm 24, thence inwardly beside the beam 12. so that when drawn upon, the arm 24 will be forced inwardly and the arm 25drawu outwardly, causing opening action of the bucket.
The gears'serve to Synchronize the movement of the bucket elements and insure the, same movement 'in each` relativel)v to the horizontal. Fixed upon the bucket elements there are respective closing arms 30, at each side, and tothose arms upon the inner bucket elements cables 31 are attached, extended forwardly and thence rearwardly around pulleys 32 upon the arms of the forward bucket element` the arms'being so poy sitioned that the pulleys 32 and ends of the opposite arms 30 are located closely together at each side when the bucket is in closed position, as shown in Fig. 1. The cables 31 may be operated in any suitable way to draw the arms toward each other, and thus close. the buckets. The shafts 2f are eccentric to the walls 22, being considerably above the centers of the bucket elements when closed. Fivoted at each side of each bucket element on an axis concentric with the outer Wall 22 in each instance there are end gates 3o, lying closey against the sides 19 and Q0, and
vexteriorly thereof, each .having edges 36 adapted to abut snugly in line with the opposed bottom edges of the walls 2Q and thereby close the openings 2l at times when the bucket is in closed position.
Upon the sides 19 and 20, adjacent their outer parts, pulleys 38 are mounted, and upon the sides closely adjacent the shaft 23', pul- .the cables are extended upwardly and over the pulleys i0 to a suitable draft connection 2, 'which includes a spring i3 and pulley block lei, the cables trom opposite gates on each side ot the bucket being continued, and carried through the pulley blocl Upon the outer side of each bucket element there is a slidable :fork device f, having a multiplicity oi tines i5, adapted to be projected beyond the edges Q2 ot the bucket elements and at right angles to said edges, the tines and the complete fork device being curved to strike against the sides4 et the bucket elements, and being suitably connected at their outer parts whereby they will be held in rigid mutual relation. At their outer upper parts, the fork elements il are provided With gear segments meshed with which there are respective gears 5l, carried upon transverse shafts 52 provided with operating4 handles 53, by which means the fork elements may be adjusted upon the bucket elements to project the tines or retract them as desired.
