"UNITED STATES PATENT oFFI E WILLIAM L. CLOUSE, QF TIFFIN, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE NATIONAL MACHINERY (10.,
or TIFFIN, OHIO.
EEADINGFSLIDE FOR. roneme iyracnmns.
a citizen of, the United States, residing at Tifiin, in the county of Seneca and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Heading-Slide for Forging-Machines, of which the following is a specification. 1
- This invention relates to bolt heading and forging machines and has for an object the reduction in the size of machines of this character without shortening the heading slide, so that the advantages of a long slide .remain present and the efliciency of the machine is'not reduced. v Another object is to provide a head ng slide which bridges'the operating shaft and its connections therewith, thereby enabling the slide to be supported beyond both sides of the shaft.
' vWith the foregoing and other objects in iview which will appear as the description proceeds, the'finvention consists of certain noveldetails of construction and combin-a-' tions of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims, it being understood that various changes may be made in the construction;
and arrangementof the parts without de-- parting from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as set' forth in the appended claims.
Inthe accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings Figure lis a plan view'of aportion of a bolt heading and forgingmachine having the improved heading slide thereon.
Fig. 2 isa vertical .section through the slide and adjacent parts. Referring to the figures by characters of reference, 1 designates the frame of the machine provided with the usual channel or guideway 2 for the heading slide, there be ing dies 3 at one end of the channel, a die slide 4, and means for operating the die slide, all of which constitutes no part of the present invention.
The operating shaft 5 extends across the channel 2 and has an eccentric 6 or the like for operating an arm 7. The heading slide Specification of Letters Patent. 'Patented Mar, 11, 1919, Application filed October 14, 1918. Serial No. 257,964.-
7 is connected to the slide at the front por-.
tion of the arch andas indicated at 10 and the arch is so proportioned as to-allow the arm and its connections to work freely below the arch with the result that, as the shaft 5 rotates, the slide willbe reciprocated within the channel 2. Heretofore the shaft has been located back of the path of movement of the slideand the pitman or the like has been interposed between the shaft and the slide. This has required the use of a frame 1 of objectionable length.
With the'present arrangement, however, the
slide can be made longer than ordinarily -and,-at'the same time, the length of the frame can be reduced. By increasing the length of the' heading slide better alinement of the slide with the'work is obtained and the articles produced are correspondingly improved. I
WVhat is claimed is ,1. Ina bolt heading and forging machine a heading slide having an intermediate oflset portion, an operating shaft extending transversely of the slide and past the ofiset portion, and means housed by said offset portion for transmitting motion from the shaft to the slide.
-2.-In a bolt heading and'forging machine I the combination with a frame having a guideway, of a heading slide mounted on the 'guideway, an operating shaft, said slide WILLIAM L; CLOU'SE.
