FLUlID-PRESSURE-OPERATED JACK.
To all whom it-majz concern:
' Be it known that I, WILLIAM G. CANFIELD, a citizenof the United States, residing at St. Louis, and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fluid- Pressure-Operated Jacks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved fluid pressure operated jack which is especially adapted for use for raising or lowering an automobile or other weight, but which can be used for any analogous purpose, the object of the invention being to provide an improved jack of this character which is simple in construction and which is automatic in operation. I
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is an elevation of a jack constructed. and arranged in accordance with my invention and showing the same in raised position. I

has one end screwed in the pipe coil 8 as at 12 the other end of the said rod being arranged in the nipple 10 and screwed into the same as at 13. A stop ring 14 is screwed around the upper end of the section 1.
' The section 2 is arranged for vertical telescopic movement in the section 1, is open at the upper end and is closed at the bottom as v at 15, said botto having a central opening 16. A packing disk 17 is secured under the bottom and between the same and a flanged disk 18, said-flanged disk being secured to the bottom by rivets 19 which extend through said packing disk and also through the bottom, as shown in Fig. 2. The packing disk and the flanged disk are provided with an opening 20 of greater diameter than the opening 16 and which is concentric therewith.
v A valve 21 is provided to close and open the opening 16 and is here shown as having a head 22 which may be seated closely against the bottom 15 and as also having a downwardly extending stem which is provided with a central globular enlargement 23 whereby recesses 24:, 25 are provided above and below said globular enlargement. A base 26 isalso here shown at the lower end of the valve stem and which is en gaged by a link 27 to which the upper end of a valve operating chain 28 is attached, the lower end of said chain being attached near the centerof the rod 11. To hold the valve in either opened or closed position, I provide a pair of oppositely and radially arranged locking bolts 29 which pass through and are slidable in openings in guide studs 30 which are here shown as screwed to anddepending from the. flanged disk 18. Each locking bolt has a gripping yoke 31 at its inner end and is'also provided with a coiled spring 32, said springs being arranged between the gripping yokes and the guide studs and serve to hold the gripping yokes of the lockingbolts engaged l the valve stem either in the recess 2er the recess 25 below the globular e ement 23 and hence said locking e. springs serve to hold the valve either in en or in closed position.

The intermediate section 2 is provided at its upper end with a stop ring83 which is screwedthereon and which is adapted to engage the upper end of the section 1 when said section 2 is lowered. A tubular casing member the stop ring 33 and is provided at its lower end an internally arranged stop ring 35 which is screwed thereto and which when the sectionfi moves upwardly engages the stop ring l'and thereby limits the upward movement of said section 2.

A stop ring lO is screwed around the upper end of the upper section 3. W hen my improved jack is used for lifting an automobile, it is preferably used in connection with a rack which I have fully described and claimed in a co-pending application for Letters Patent of the United States of even date herewith. lhe lifting jack may, however, be used independently or" the rack and for any suitable purpose.
To support the sections 2 and 3 in raised posh-ion without employing compressed air or other motor fluid, I provide props 61 each of which comprises a standard 62 adapted to have its lower end arranged in one of the openings 7 and thereoysupported by the base and provided with vertically adjustable arcuate armsfli l, 6% which are slidable on the standard and which may be secured to the standard at any desired adjustment by set screws Said arcuate arms may be en gaged under the casing members 34 and 41 1 as shown in Fig. 1. While I have herdin shown and described a preferred embodiment of my invention, It would have it understood that changes may be made in the form, proportion and construction of the several parts, without de-- parting from the spirit of my invention, and within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. in a fluid pressure operated -jack, a lower section, an intermediate section, and an upper section telescopically related, means to supply motor fluid to the lower section and means controlled by the movement of the intermediate section to supply'motor fluid from the lower section, to the intermediate section when the latter is raised, and

In a fluid pressure operated ack, a cy lindrical lower section, a cylindrical intermediate section telescopically fitted in the lower section andhaving a bottom provided with an opening, a cylindrical upper section telescopically fitted in the intermediate section, a valve carried by the intermediate section and arranged for vertical movement to close and open said opening, an element connecting said valve to the bottomof the lower section and serving to open said valve when said intermediate section is raised, said valve having means to cause the same to be movedto closed positionby contacting with the lower.

4. In a jack of the class described, a plurality of telescopically related cylindrical sections, certain of which are provided with exteriorly arranged casing members, and a prop having means to engage under said casing members for the purpose set forth.
