ROMEO CACCIALANZA, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR TO WESTERN DOLL AND TOY MFG. CO., OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, A CORPORATION OF CALIFORNIA.
DOLL-HEAD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 11, 1919.
Application filed July 30, 1918. Serial No. 247,377.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, RoMEo CAcoIALANzA, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles, State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Doll -Heads, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to doll heads and has as its primary object the provision of a strong and durable doll head. The particular feature of my present doll head is the fact that it has a closed bottomedshoulder. In the ordinary doll head as now in common use, the head is made with an open bottomed shoulder, that is, having a neck cavity which extends up into the hollow head and the shoulder thus bearing on the doll body. around the edge'of the shoulder and not in the center Where the neck cavity is.
It is an object of this invention to make a shoulder construction whichbears with a full bearing surface on the doll body and to provide a shoulder construction which is strong and durable due to the fact that there is no neck opening through what might be termed the shoulder plate of the doll head.
The invention will be best understood from the following detailed description of a pre* ferred form of construction embodying the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a vertical central section of the improved doll head; and Fig.2 is a part front elevation and part transverse central section of the doll head.
In the drawings I illustrate a hollow doll head, the head walls 10 of which are made of any suitable material. My invention is particularly applicable to doll heads made of composition material, although the invention is not at all limited to that material but may be applied to doll heads of other materials. However, in composition doll heads it has been usual heretofore to mount the shoulder walls 11 directly upon. the doll body 12. It is readily seen that where-this is done there is only an annular shaped flange bearing upon the doll body; and this annular shoulder flange is a weak part of the head construction. I reinforce the shoulder construction by casting integrally with the head and shoulder walls a shoulder plate 13 which completely closes the bottom of the shoulder. Preferably this shoulder plate joins the shoulder walls 11 at their outside edges, leaving a slight hollow base as indicated at 14, thus making a construction which is light in weight as well as strong.
IIowever, it is not entirely necessary that a space be left at let; because it is the primary function of the shoulder plate to close the neck opening 15, which neck opening in the usual form of construction makes a hole in the bottom of the shoulder; and it is the function of the plate 13 primarily to close the opening 15 and thus make a body engaging lower surface for the doll shoulders which is of large extent and area, and to provide a strengthening wall or web across the opening 15 to reinforce and strengthen the shoulder construction.
Having described a preferred form of my invention, I claim:
1. In a doll head, head walls forming a hollow head, and a wall for the shoulder extending across the neck opening of the hollow head so as to form a closed bottomed shoulder.
2. In a doll head, head walls forming a hollow head and shoulder construction, and a reinforcing shoulder plate wall joined with the shoulders at their outer edges and forming a complete bottom closure for the hollow shoulders and neck.
8. In a doll head, head and shoulder walls forming-a hollow head and hollow shoulder construction, and a reinforcing shoulder plate wall joined with the shoulders at their outer edges and forming a complete bottom closure for the hollow shoulders and neck,
a hollow space being left between the shoulder walls and said shoulder plate wall. In witness that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto subscribed my name this 23d day of July, 1918.
