Description

1'. BIANDERSON. CUTTING 10RCH.
APPLICATION FILED AUG.27. l9l8.
Patented Mar. 11,1919.
JAMES B. ANDERSON, SEALER TO'WNSHIP, ALLEGHENY CQUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA.-
CUTTING-TGRCH.
application filed August 27,
Be it known that l. James B. ANDERSON, cit zen 01 the United States, and residing in the township of Shalcr, in the county of Allegheny and State of PebnsylVania, have invented or discovered new and useful Improvements in Cutti11g-'lorcl1es, of which the following s}. ecification.
My invention consists in certain new and useful improvements in cutting; torches for use with oxygen and a combustible gas, such ene or one of its possible substitutes, and more especially-the present im proremcnt relates to the lip and head structure of the torch.
The object I have in VlfiW is to obtain, mm alia, the following improved results: The more intimate and complete misting of the low pressure oxygen and the CQDJlJHS'ilhis gas him a homogeneous heating gas, thereb effecting very marked economy in the volume and pressure cl gas required, while at the same time obtaining a very substa tiai increase of furnished. The econcmy i zerelore extended to the volume and pressure of the high pressure or required for cutting. Again, I have in. the use of less expensive substii'zules acetylene, such as butane and other which are now regarded as more er l worthless byproducts, Another object the prevention 01 the iiame blowing our. at w pressure or blowing; back iulc the torch. I accomplish these ends by prcfviil 'iga base and tip structure which has, in a .ticn to the usual. axial passage or the high pressure oxygen, an. annular mining chamber into which the low pressure 01; gen and the C011ll3l1$ll3l as are admitted and wherein they are partially mixed: she-11 an annular chamber, into which the ii'rtiallv mixed.
gases are led, which is characterized by a ilurality ofranes or blades, preferably of angular shape, intersecting the chamber to thoroughly break up end iutermingle the streams of entering gases so that a compleceiy mixed gasis formed; third ennu lar chamber him which the composite heatirig gas is admitted from the vase chamber and which serves to establish a uniform sup cf the same, and finally a series cf passages, concentric with the high giressme,
xygen passage, through which the compcsiie tip,
gas vpasses to fthe outer end of the Specification of Letters Patent.
191d. Serial 310. 251,638,
In the accompanying drawings, which are merely intended to illustrate the principles oi my invention without limiting the scope Patented Mar. 11, 1919.
thereof to the construction shown, Figure 1 is a central section through a torch head and tip embodying my invention; h1g2 is an elevation of the tip dismounted from the head; Fig. 3 a butt end view of the tip; Fig. is a cross section taken along the line IV-IV in F 2, and Fig. 5 is a similar View taken along the line V I in Fig. 2.
The following is a detailed description of the drawiu represents the head of a torch, shown as of the design more fully described in my pendinc patent application Serial Number W555, filed in the United States Patent Jilce on April th, 1918. Said head is shown provided with a high pressure oxygen chmnber 1 into which leads the supply tube 2. 3 a Valve seat connecting said chamber with the axial bore 4 of an externally tapered nozzle 5 which is preferably 5 be al with the head. 6 is a spring seated HAVE engaging said Valve seat and controlled by the operating rod 7, I
An annular low pressure oxygen chamber surrounds l'hc base cf'the nozzle 5, and into said chambcr leads the low pressure oxygen tube 9. 10 is an annular, exterior-1y threaded flange, integral with the head and ccnccrllric with but spaced away from the nczzle .A- supply tube 11 for combustible leads into the! interior of said flange L .ar its base.
13 is a dcmountuble tip member, more clearly shown in Figs. 2, 3, al and 5, Said tip is prcvided with the usual axial bore 12 whose inner end is flared to fit over the muzzle 5 and fo m a tight joint therewith. The but-t cud 1 of said tip is cylindrical and at extremity is provided with a circumferential co 'lar 1.4 which fits up in the interior of the flange 10. It is evident that the butt end of ibc tip forms the closure of the 10w pressuri oxygen chamber 8.
ifis a second circumferential collar on the inner end of the cylindrical butt of the tip, When the tip is unserted in the head an ennular chamber ll) is formed between the tip
