igg,
illlll-m-llllllllllll A WITNE'S8EI'S: I g INVENTOI? I ATTORNEY DANIEL J. STOLTZ, OF MONTPELIER, INDIANA.
our non PUMPS, 8w.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 11, 1919.
Application filed March 23, 1918. Serial No. 224,160.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL J. S'roLrz, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Montpelier, in the county of Blackford and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cups for Pumps, &c., of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in cups for pumps and the method of making same, and the object thereof is to so construct cups, of the form ordinarily used in pmnp-plungers, etc., that replacements of same which generally are made necessary because of wear, will be required less frequently. And, another object is to so construct the cup that it will retain its original form and size until required for use.
The objects of the invention are accomplished by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical central section of a cup made in accordance with the invention;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same;
Fig. 3 is a plan view of a leather disk which forms apart of the blank of which the cup is formed;
Fig. 4 is a vertical central section of Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the leather disk, and showing also a stratum thereon of boiled shellac;
Fig. 6 is a side elevation of a completed blank of which the cup is formed; and
Fig. 7 is a plan view of Fig. 6.
Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the various views and referring now to the same The cup is made of a blank formed of a leather disk A having numerous punctures B made in one side thereof and which extend only partially through the body of the disk. A heavy coating C of thick boiled shellac is applied to the disk so as to cover the entire surface of its punctured side, and upon the coating of shellac is fixed a sheet D of heavy'canvas, shaped to conform with the circular disk. The parts thus arranged are secured together by an annular series of stitches E extending near the marginal edge of the blank. When thus formed the blank Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the is treated to abath of heated water until it becomes flaccid, after which the blank is pressed into the form of a cup by the use of dies, in the ordinary manner. While held in the dies, in the shape to which it has been formed therein, the blank is subjected to baking treatment which consists of applying dry heat to an extent that its contained moisture is removed thereby. The blank thus shaped and treated is removed from the dies in a dry condition and is subsequently trimmed to the desired form, such for example as isshown in Figs. 1 and 2.
The eifect of the heated water renders the blank flaccid, andthe fluidity of the shellac coating becomes greater so that it yields readily to the process of its formation into the shape of a cup. The application of dry heat in the baking process after the cup has been shaped drives moisture therefrom and leaves the shaped cup permanently fixed as to its form. A blank thus formed is trimmed by the ordinary machining process which is applied to give to the shaped blank its ultimate finished form which it retains permanently.
During the process in which the blank is saturated in heated water and shaped into a cup, owing to the punctures in the disk, the shellac permeates the body of the disk, and when dry heat is applied the blank thus shaped becomes set and hardened, and
therefore does not tend to reassume its original form.
What I claim is:- A cup packing for pumps composed of a leather disk having numerous punctures in one of its surfaces, a coating of thickened boiled shellac extending over the punctured surface of the disk, and a canvas sheet attached to the disk, with the shellac coating lying therebetween, the blank thus formed of the disk coating, and sheet being shaped into the form of a cup and trimmed to the desired size.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
DANIEL J. STOLTZ. Witnesses:
