Description

ARTHUR A. BACKH AUS, 0F BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, ASSIGNOR TO U. S. INDUSTRIAL ALCOHOL CO., A CORPORATION OF WEST VIRGINIA.
\ LIQUID FUEL.
No Drawing.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR A. BAcKHAUs', of Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Liquid Fuel, and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates particularly to fuels designed to be used in any desired manner, but it has application especially to fuels adapted to be used as a source of power, as for example fuels for burners and motor fuels.
The object of my invention is to provide a fuel containing a petroleum hydrocarbon,
as well as alcohol, and an ingredient adapt ed to blend the same or form a solution with the hydrocarbon and alcohol.
A further object of my invention is to provide a fuel of this character, which is of such a nature. that only a very'small quantity of the. third ingredient is found necessary.
A further object is to provide a fuel of this character which contains a large percentage of the petroleum hydrocarbon, notwithstanding the small percentageof the third ingredient. x
A further object is to provide afuel of this character in which the third ingredient is castor oil.
Further objects of my invention will appear from the detailed description thereof contained hereinafter. 7 While my invention is capable of being carried out in different ways, for the purpose of illustration I shall describe only certain ways of carrying out the same herein.
For example, a fuel made in accordance with my invention may be made as follows:
The fuel may be comprised of one part by volume'of a petroleum distillate, as for example gasolene, one part by volume of ethyl alcohol and from .02 to .04 parts by volume of castor oil. The proportions may be varied, if desired, and the proportion of gasolene may be increased, provided the quantity of castor oil is increased somewhat. It
alcohol blended by castor 011.
will be understood, also, that, in place of gasolene, other hydrocarbon distillates may be used. Thus, by way of example, a portion or all of the gasolene may be substituted by kerosene.
The castor oil is comprised of triricino- 16in, triricinisolein, palamitin and dihy- Specification of Letters Patent. Pat ent-ed Elam, 11, 1919, Application filed October 12, 1917. Serial No. 196.177.
droxystearin. Instead of the castor oil in the above composition, I may use, however, other oils containing esters of the hydroxy fatty acids or the hydroxy acids obtained from any of the above-mentioned oils.- The acids from castor oil may be obtained by saponifying in any desired manner and according to any of the known methods of saponification.
Vhile I have describedmy invention above in detail, I wish it to be understood that many changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit thereof.
I claim:
'1. A fuel comprising a petroleum distillate and an alcohol blended by a compound containing the acid radical of a hydroxy fatty acid. t?
2. A fuel comprising a petroleum distillate and an alcohol blended by an ester containing the acid radical of a hydroxy fatty acid.
3. A fuel comprising a petroleum distillate and an alcohol blended by a glycerid containing the acid radical of a hydroxy fatty acid adapted to blend the other constituents.
4. A fuel comprising a petroleum distillate and an alcohol blended by a compound containing the acid radical of ricinoleic acid.
5. A fuel comprising a petroleum distillate and an alcohol blended by an ester containing the acid radical of ricinoleic acid.
6. A fuel comprising a petroleum distillate and an alcohol blended by a glycerid containing the acid radical of ricinoleic acid.
7. A fuel comprising a petroleum distillate and an alcohol blended by castor o1l.
8. A fuel comprising a petroleum distillate and ethyl alcohol blended by a com- [pound containing the acid radical of a hydroxy fatty acid.
9. A fuel comprising a petroleum dist llate and ethyl alcohol blended by castor 011. 10. A fuel comprising gasolene and an alcohol blended by a compound containing the acid radical of a hydroxy fatty acid.
11. A fuel comprising gasolene and an 12. Afuel comprising gasolene', kerosene, and an alcohol blended by a compound containing the acid radical of a hydroxy fatty acid.
13. A fuel comprising gasolene, lrercsene, and an alcohol blended by castor 011.
14:. A fuel comprising substantially equal parts of the petroleum distillate and an alcohol blended by a relatively small proportion of a vegetable oil containing the ester 5 of a hydroxy fatty acid.
15. A fuel consisting essentially of a pctroleum distillate, an alcohol and a vegetable oil containing an acidradical of a hydroxy fatty acid, the Vegetable oil being in relativelyvsmall proportion and acting to blend 10 the alcohol and petroleum distillate into a homogeneous mixture.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set'my hand.
