MACHINE FOR MAKING CELLULOID BUTTONS.
county of Bronx, city'and State of New York, have inventedcertain new and useful I Improvements in Machines for Making Celspecification. 7
My invention relates to a semi-automatic machine for making buttons having a celluloid top, and in particular to buttons made of a celluloid top, acardboard stiffener and.
- a metallic :base.
.7 Buttons of this .kind are well known, and have been extensively used, I and they are usually made by. shaping the flat circular celluloid blank by means of heatand pressure to the required form, and then inserting a cardboard stiffener and attaching a metallic top.
' Celluloid of different grades and different 7 kinds of finish requires difierent degrees of heat in orderto shape it properly, as well as different periods of application of "the heat. ln addition, the celluloid is coated 'with apaint of some kind to color it, and the different qualities of paints also require different treatment.
- My'i-nvention relatesto a semi-automatic machine which shall permit a rapid and easy manufacture of these, buttons, while the op erator can readily observe the process of manufactureand suitably regulate the conditions under which the buttons are made. Other objects of my invention'will be pointed out in the. following description and drawings which illustrate a preferred emmechanism for moving these dies. Fi 8 isa v ew sim lar to Fig. 7 showing bodiment, thereof. 1 Figure 1 is a; front view of my machine. Fig. 2 is a side view thereof. 1 Figs. 3, 4, 5 and 6 are rear viewsof the machine showing the dies in various positionsj Fig. 7 is a central vertical section through the dies, and, partially shows the Specifioation of Letters Patent.

position by means of the dog 14:, which is pivoted at 16 to'the stud 17 ,and as is shown 111 Fig. 1, has a notch 15 which is adapted to fit around the top of the die 18.
At the upper'part of the machine, a head 1 is moved up and down by anypsuitable means, such as a lever operated by the feet ofthe operator, or any other suitable me chanical movement which is not illustrated V in the drawings, because. such mechanical movements are in themselves old and form no part of my invention, and are readily within the comprehension of any person skilled in theart. I
The head 1 has a circular recess therein, into which a rod 9 fits and'is secured by means of the set screw 8, asshown in Fig. 2. The rod 9 is moved up anddown in front of the guide-piece 2, as shown in Fig.2. It carries the cross head 10 which is immovably therewith. The cross-headlO has the slide 11 connected thereto. This slide 11 moves up and down with the cross-head 10, and may also have a sliding, horizontal movement at right angles imparted thereto by any suitable means.
The slide 11, as is shown most clearlyin Figs. 7 and-'8, has a sleeve 4:4: secured thereto by means of the bolt 20. To" this sleeve 44, which is internally threaded, an annular-die 19 is secured.
. secured thereto, and may be made integral This die l9 has, a plunger 40 having a recess 50,- slidably mounted therein.- The plunger 40 has a pin 41' secured thereto, and the crossrhead 10 is suitably recessed as shown in Fig. 7, so that the pin 41 can be moved to and fro. The plunger 40 fits sufliciently tightly into the interior of the die 19 to be held by friction. The crosshead 10 has a bevel surface 42, as shown in Figs. 7 and8,
so that, when the slide 11 is moved a sufficient distance to the left; this-bevel surface 42 forces the pin 41 and the plunger 40 downwardlyas is shown in Fig. 7.
At the right of the die 19, a cylindricalthreaded head. Tothis die 46 a'ring-shaped die 12-issecured by-means of a spiral spring 13. The die 46 is suitably recessed ad acent the pin 45, which is connected to the die 12, so that'any rotation thereof 'Wlth respect to the-die 46 is prevented; The die 12 is slot- '-;.tedat the right hand side thereof, so that 5 when it is lowered,it does not move the dog 14 as issliown in Fig. 9, while the die-19 is not slotted so that when it is lowered, 1t
' cooperates with therbeveled top of the 'dog 14 and moves it to the right, thus releasing the die 18 and permitting it to fall to its down moveinent'at certain times. the pin-7 to shift from the slot 3 to the slot lowermost position. The guide-piece 2 has -.male die 46 issecu-red by means of a suitably slanting slots 3 and 4 having vertical legs 5 and 6 out therein. The slide 11 has a pin 7 secured thereto, which has a head suitably fastened therein by means of a threaded projection 21, and this fits into the slots of the guide-piece 2, so that as the slide 1 is moved up and down, together with "the heated by a steamjacket or byvanyother upwardly by the spring 30with a snap, and the storedenergy of the spring 30 1s sufficient to throw the pin 7 together with the downward or nextmovement of the head 1, will' cause the slide 11 to move in the opposite direction.
in this manner, as the head.,.1.and .the cross-head 10 are moved up' and down, the
slide 11 is'alternately placed in cooperative relation with the slots 3 and4, sothat the die 18 and stud 53 cooperate alternately with thestud' 46 and the;die112, and theipl'unger 40 and the die 19. I
The die-18 and stud 53 ca i be suitably means which are notiillustrated in the drawing as they are inrthemselvess old and-.well
known and form no part of my invention, and are within-the comprehension of. any person skilled in the art "Suitable regulating means'for the'heatmay, of course, be employed The 7 surfaces 33 are sufficiently separated to prevent any catching of: the bottom'of the yoke'when it is operated so as toshift'theslide'11.' w
. slide llsufiiciently, so as to causethe pin 7 to cooperate withlthe" slot 3', so that the The operation ;of my'device is asafollows:
The operator sees that-the die 18 and the 'stud53 are suitably heated, and-moves the die-18 to its uppermost position, shown in Fig. 7 and causes it to engage-in the slot 15 of the'dog 14. He then takes a circular piece of celluloid -48 of: the proper size, shown in Fig-'11, andplaces'it within the 7 die 18, as'shown in'Fig. 7. Thedie18 and cross-head 10, the slide 11 will be shifted from leftto right, or vice versa, and also w1ll be compelled to partake of the up-and- To cause 4, as is shown in Fig. 3, a device is employed which is illustrated clearly in Figs. 3 to 6, mclu'sive. At the rear ofthe guide-plate 2, a yoke 22 having a recess 34, is pivoted at 23.
The bottom 36 of the yoke 22 has beveled faces 35. A spring 30 is secured to the pro ectlon 29 by a sultabl-e screw or the like,
. and the curveof this rests upon the screw 31 ,which may be adjusted so as to cause the spring 30 to upwardly urge the cam head '32 to any desired extent. The cam head 32 1 has'beveled faces 33 adapted tocooperate with the beveled faces 35.
When the operator moves the head] 1 to its uppermost posi- 1 tion, the stud 7 is substantially on the central line between the slots 3 and 4. 7 'As this is done, one offthe bevel surfaces 35 of the yoke 22;will bear. against the adjacent and -outermost bevel edge of the cam head 32,
and force it downwardly against the resistance of the spring 30. When the yoke 22 is revolved suff ciently so that the other bevel surface35 contacts with; the adjacent bevel surface 33, the cam head 32 is forced the stud 53 now form what may be termed a composite female die which "cooperates relative movement with respect to the stud 46, as is shown in Fig. 9.
j The operator now upwardly moves the head 1 whereby the yoke 22' and thecam head 32automatically shift the slide 11, so that it will cooperate with the slot 4gof the guide-piece2. While the head '1 is in its uppermost position, the operator places the stiffener 49 on the celluloid top 52- and; also laces on top of this-a metal base 47}having the boss 51, as'is shown in FigfSijThG plunger 40 is pushed within 'thedie 19, as it is pressed against themeta'l base '47, as the cross-head 10 again descends, while the die 19,,cooperating with the upper bevel surface of thedog 14, moves the dogato the at the proper time, and causes the die 'the die 19 and plunger 40 act as a composite female die. By the action of this second set of dies, the metal 'base 47 is forced into the celluloid top 52 whose flanges are crimped thereover so as to tightly hold it. The recess 50 in the plunger 40 fits on the boss 51, so that when the cross-head 10 is again upwardly moved, the entire completed button is carried along with it to be discharged when the bevel surface 42 acts upon the pin 41 and forces the plunger 40 out of the die 19, as is shown in Fig. 7.
