Description

E. L. CLAUS.
GAS COCK.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 21. 1918.

WITNESS: INVENTOR ATTORNEY U TE srATEs ATEN Fm.
EMIL L. CLAUS, 0F MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
GAS-COCK.
Application filed May 21, 1918. Serial No. 235,775.
' while under present existing conditions due to an inadequate fuel supply caused by the war, many localities have been forced to furnish gas at a pressure far below normal. In view of this, great difficulty has been encountered in obtaining a valve to meet these abnormal and varying conditions.
Further, inasmuch as the manufacture of gas cocks necessarily relies upon the great quantity produced and unskilled labor for production in order to render the same profitable, great difficulty has been encountered in obtaining cocks in which the vital points j the casing is the usual cut off plug 5.
of construction are uniform.
Therefore, in order to meet the varying existing conditions and to overcome the obj ectionable features of present gas cook construction it is an object of the present invention to provide a simple economical and efficient cock in that the jet plug is detachable from the cock and which will present a minimum obstruction to the flow of gas whereby the maximum velocity of the same is obtained.
Another object is to provide a detachable jet plug which can be formed by dies thereby insuring uniformity and eliminating variations resulting from the use of unskilled labor.
Another object is to provide a gas cock with a detachable jet plug which can be adjusted with relation to the cock to meet varying distances between the cock and burner pipe.
Specification of Letters Patent.
A still further object is to providea cock with a jet plug made of resilient material which will prevent damage to the jet plug by contact with the regulating nipple.
With these and other objects in view which will be apparent as the description roceeds my invention resides in the novel eatures of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter 'de scribed and defined by the appended claims, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment might be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of the invention.
This invention in practical form in which it may be embodied is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is a sectional view through a gas cook embodying the features of the inventlon.
Fig. 2 is a sectional-view through the de-' tachable jet plug, and Fig. 3 is a front elevational view of the et plug.
Referring now more particularly to the drawing 1 designates a gas cook of ordinary construction comprising a casing 2 provided with an inlet 3 and an outlet 4. Fitted into Projecting from the casing and in register with the outlet port 4 is a discharge nozzle 6 threaded to receive a regulating nipple 7. The discharge nozzle is provided with a bore slightly larger in diameter than the outlet 4 whereby a shoulder 6 is provided. Inserted into the bore of the nozzle 6 and adapted to abut the shoulder 6 is a detachable jet plug 8 constructed of resilient material, prferably of phosphorous bronze which is not affected by gas and possesses the proper amount of resiliency best suited for the purpose. V
The jet plug 8 which consists of a coiled metallic ribbon is in practice manufactured from a coiled spring of the proper length that is placed into a die whereupon the wire is flattened into a ribbon having a smooth surface which offers a minimum resistance to the passage of gas through the jet plug.
From this construction it will be readily seen, as best shown in Fig. 2, that due to the small diameter of the conical end portion 9 and the spaced turns connecting it with the body portion 9, suitable openings will be provided which will permit a straight passage of gas therethrough, thereby reducing resistance against the flow of gas to a minimum. In operation the orifice provided in the conical end admits a small flow of gas which works upon the injector principle and acts as a leader for the gas passing between the body and conical end portions. It will be understood, however, that the end of the conical portion might be closed in some instances, where the pressure is exceedingly great, without departing from the invention. As best shown in Fig. 1 the regulating nipple 7 is provided with an opening 7 tapered to correspond to the conical end portion 9 of the jet plug and it will be further seen that upon turning the nipple in or out upon the nozzle6 the opening 7 will act in conjunction with the conical end portion 9 to regulate the flow of gas to the burner. 1
. In assembling, the jet plug, which is slightly larger in diameter than the bore oi the nozzle 6, is inserted into the bore and turned in clockwise direction whereby the diameter of the body portion of the jet plug is decreased sufficiently to permit the same to be set at any desired position in the bore. This is a great advantage as in many instances the distance between -the burner pipe and cock varies. Therefore by having the jet plug together with the regulating nipple adjustable this variation can be compensated for. After the jet plug has once been set to its desired position the same can only be changed by turning it in a clockwise direction, as a counter-clockwise turn will expand the turns of the jet plug sufliciently to grip the sides of the bore thereby preventing its movement.
By constructing the spring of resilient material another advantage is obtained in that the jet plug cannot be damaged by contact with the regulating nipple which is often the case in cocks of ordinary construction. In the present construction should the jet plug be turned into the bore until it abuts the shoulder 6" and the regulatingnipple turned in until it engages the conical end portion of the jet plug no damage can result due to the resiliency of the turns the opening 7 to correspond with the conical end portion, damage to the conical end portion, which might otherwise result were a sharp corner to' engage the end, is prevented; V 7
What is claimed is 1. A jet plug comprising a body portion, an end portion, and yieldable means con nectingthe two portions, said means being yieldable longitudinally of the plug.
2. A jet plug comprising a shell-like body having a cylindrical body portion, a conical end portion,'and a skeleton connection between the body and end portion, said connection being yieldable longitudinally of the line of axis of the plug. 7
,3. A jet plug for gas cocks embodying a ribbon Wound in a series of closed flat coils at its base and a series of conical flat coils at its end, the end and base being connected by a Winding of comparatively greater pitch.
l. A jet plug for gas cocks embodying a resilientribbon wound in a series of closed fiat coils at itsbase and a series of closed conical fiat coils at its end, the end and base being connected by a resilient winding of comparatively greater pitch than its end coils. r
5. A jet plug for gas cocks comprising a shell-like body portion, a hollow conical end portion of smaller diameter than the body portion, and means for connecting the two portions whereby an unbroken'passage of gas around the conical end portion is permitted.
6. A jet plug for gas cocks comprising a shell-like body portion, a conical end portion of smaller diameter than the body portion, and a splral wlnd connectlng the two portions whereby a continuous openingaround the jet is obtained, said opening permitting an unbroken passage of gas around the conical end portion.
7. A jet plug for gas cocks embodying a ribbon wound in a series of closed flat coils at its base and a series of conical flat coils at its end, the conical end portion thus formed being of smaller diameter than the base and being connected thereto by a winding of comparatively greater pitch.
8. A hollow jet plug for gas cocks constructed of coiled wire and provided with an opening between its turns to permit the passage of gas therethrough.
9. A gas cook comprising a casing provided with an inlet and an outlet, a plug by a windin of comparatively greater pitch fitted in said casing, a discharge nozzle, :1 than the en coils. 10 regulating nipple, and a detachable jet plug In testimony that I claim the foregoing I associated with said outlet, said jet plug have hereunto set my hand at Milwaukee, being constructed of a resilient metallic in the county of Milwaukee and State of ribbon Wound in a series of closed flat coils Wisconsin.
