STORAGE 0F OIL-FUEL IN VESSELS.
Speciiicaton of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 4, 1919.
Application filed October 30, 1917. Serial N o. 199,315.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HAROLD EDGAR YAR- now, a subject of the King of Grreat Britain, residing in Glasgow, Scotland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements Connected with the Storage of Oil- Fuel in Vessels, of which the following is a specification.
In certain classes of vessels using oil fuel, more particularly destroyers, it is important to increase the storage capacity for the oil beyond that usually provided. If this additional storage space were provided at the ends of the vessel the amidships part would require to be very considerably strengthened in order to stand the stresses set up when the ends were raised out of the water in a heavy sea.
In addition to the tanks usually provided, other oil tanks may be placed amidships underneath the boilers throughout the stokehold compartments. This disposition of the weights reduces the stresses acting on the vessel in a sea-way and thereby enables material to 4be economized and a saving in weight to be effected.
In order, however, to prevent the oil tanks underneath the boilers from being raised to too high a temperature by the heat radiated from the brick pans at the bottom of the furnaces, according to the invention, a grid of small tubes through which water circulates is placed between a brick pan and the tank below it.
In the accompanying drawing, which shows an example of the invention as applied to a destroyer, Figure l is a cross section of the vessel taken in front of one of the boilers; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through a water tube boiler.
A is a steam drum, B water drums, C su- I perheater tubes, D are oil tanks underneath the boilers, E is a` grid formed of small tubes, through which water circulates.
case the feed water would be slightly heated,
or an independent supply of water may be caused to circulate through the grid by a pump.
Having now fully described the nature of my said invention and the best means I know of carryingl the same into practical effect, I Claim:-
1. In a ship provided with boilers fired by oil fuel, oil tanks placedbelow the boilers, grids of tubes placed between the boilers and the tanks, headers connected to the tubes at opposite ends thereof, a water inlet at one set of headers and a water outlet at the opposite headers, and means for circulating the water through said tubes.
2. In a ship provided with boilers fired by oil fuel, oil tanks placed below the boilers, grids of tubes placed between the boilers and the tanks, headers connected to the tubes at opposite ends thereof, a water inlet at one set of headers and a water outlet at the opposite headers, and means fo-r circulating the feed water to the boiler thro-ugh said tubes.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name t0 this specication in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HAROLD E. YARROW.
