To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTR P. MURPHY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, in thev county of New York and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Car-Roofs, of which thev following isa specication.
This invention relates to improvements in car roofs of the type,l wherein the metal roof sheets extend from eaves to eaves and are supported on a skeleton framework.
My invention relates to the means for fastening the seam covers and the'means for the attachment thereof to the carline. One of the principal objects of the invention is to provide means for fastening the seam cover directly to the carline so as to move therewith. Another object is to eliminate the hood casting commonly used in connection with this type of roof and thereby reduce the overall dimension of the roof.
A further object is to construct a roofv wherein the roof sheets` are free to move independently of each other and of the carlines and seam covers, within certain limits. A still further object isto prevent'any water that may leak around the securingl bolts from entering the car. Another object is to rigidly secure the seam cover to the carline whereby the seam cover is supported at afixed distance from the roof sheets thereby preventing the same from bearing on the roof sheet with any great force, and to attain further advantages hereinafter set forth.V
My invention consists in the parts and in the combinations and arrangements yof parts hereinafter described and claimed.l l

Referring to the drawings, the invention is shown applied to a car comprising Z-bar side plates 9. Each Z-bar side plate is positioned with its web vertical and with its top flange facing in. The carline 10 extends from side plate to side plate. The end portions of the carline rest on the top flanges of the side plates to which they are riveted or otherwise secured. The carline 10 is substantially T-shaped in cross-section with its web portion 11 uppermost. A wooden fascia-board 12 is bolted to the vertical web of the side plate 9. The roof sheets 13 extend from eaves to eaves with their end portions resting on the top surface of the fascia and have end flanges 14 turned down into a rabbet 15 in the fascia board 12. Y The side margins of the sheets are bent upward in aninverted U-shaped flange 16, the ianges of one sheet overlapping the anges of the adjacent sheet, thus` forming upstanding hollow seams. The overlapped flanges 16, which form the hollow seams, extend from eaves to eaves and'straddle the vertical web 11 of the carline 10. A seam cover 17 of inverted channel-shape in cross-section having outwardly extending base flanges 18 is arranged over the hollow seams of the roof sheets. The base flanges practically touch the body portion of the adjacent sheets, but preferably mounted so as not to be clamped thereon. This seam cover'straddle's the roof sheet seams, its inside measurement being greater than the width of the seam so as to allow the sheets lto move endwise of the car. The ends of the seam cover are turned down at the eaves, the down-turned portions 19 closing the end ofthe seam cover and thereby preventing water from. entering the car.
The top portions' of the overlapped anges, which form the hollow seams, are cut away (as indicated at 20) at a suitable distance from each end of the sheets so as to permit the seam cover to be secured directly to the carline independent of the sheets. The
seam cover is secured to the web of the carline at each endby means of boltsA 21 inserted in T-slots 21e formed inthey top edges of the web of the carline and conforming in shape bolt. In a car roof, carlinesyeXtending-ffrom eaves to eaves; roofsheets-fhaving overlapped rebent flanges Vat their :Sider-'marginsvarf 130 ranged above the carlines to form hollow seams, seam covers inclosing said seams, but spaced therefrom, bolts for securing said seam covers to the carlines, bolt looks for securing the bolts to the carlines, saddle members threaded on said bolts for supporting said seam covers, said saddles being shaped to conform to the under side of the seam covers and having channels extending crosswise of the saddle at the bolt, and longitudinal grooves formed in the bottom face of the saddle on each side of the bolt to prevent the backward travel of the water on the under side of the saddle.
6. In a car roof, carlines having a vertical web portion, roof sheets having inverted U-shaped flanges overlapping the vertical web portions of the carlines, seam covers inclosing the overlapped flanges of adjacent sheets, the overlapped flanges of said sheets being cut out near their eaves ends whereby a bolt may be secured to the carlines for holding the seam covers in position.
7. In a car roof, a substructure comprising metal cai-lines, roof sheets having their edge portions extending from eaves to eaves and overlapped to form seams, said seams being cut away a distance from the eaves to receive a securing bolt, means for securing said bolt to the carlines, a seam cover for inclosing the roof sheet seams, a support for said seam cover, said support being threaded on the securing bolt and having a channel in its top surface crosswise of the bolt hole, grooves formed in the under side of the support, and an apron member located under said support, said apron having downwardly inclined flanges whereby the water dripping thereon is deflected into the pan of the sheet.
8. A car roof comprising a substructure having an upstanding bolt near the eaves, roof sheets movably mounted on said substructure on each side of the bolt, a seam cover spanning the edges of the sheets on each side of the bolt, a supporting saddle for said seam cover, saidl support being threaded on the bolt and having a channel in its top face extending crosswise of the bolt hole, and having grooves in its bottom surface extending lengthwise on each side of the bolt and a sheet metal apron having downwardly inclined Side flanges, said apron being sleeved on said bolt and clamped between the bottonivvface of the supporting member and the car substructure.
9. In a car roof, a carline having a vertical web portion, a bolt attached to said web portion, roof sheets arranged on each side of the web portion of said carline, a seam cover overlying the carline and the adjacent margins of the sheets, and a supporting saddle for said seam cover, said supporting saddle being adjustably mounted on the bolt whereby the distance between the base of the seam cover and the rooi:l sheets may be varied.
