noon-s'ror.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY GJVQIGHT, of New Britain, in the county of Hartford, State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door- Stops, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates todoor stops, and it has particular reference to devices of this class which have means connecting the door with the door casingin such a manner that when the door is opened to a predetermined, but regulable degree, I will not only be arrested,'but the'door will be held fixed in the open. position' One of the primary objects'of the invention is to furnish a door stop of the general character indicated which is "applicable, without adjustment, either to a right hand door or a lefthand door. .My improved door stop is especially designed for association with acombined door check and'closer, and as it is double acting so as to be applicable to doors of either hand, it may be used with satisfaction on any preferred kind of double acting door check and closer, thereby imparting to-the latter an added and very desirable function.
A further object of the invention is to provide a very reliable, eflicient door stop which can be readily tured and assembled, and which is not liable to get out of order. 1
To these andother ends the'invention con;- sists in the novel features and combinations ofparts to-be hereinafter. described and claimed: i

Fig. dis an inverted-planview of the ear on the link,
Fig. 7 is a plan view of the ear on'the crankarm;-and
Fig. 8 comprises detail views of the adjust'able abutment. My invention is usually, appliedto a device comprising swiveled armsjor members adapted to connect aflswi'nging door with the door casing, and in somejinstances, it may be embodied in the construction of a combineddoor check and closer, as in the example illustrated. In the form'shown my improvements are applied to or associated withthe swivel connection between thecrank arm-0r the door check and the link which carries, the attaching foot or bracket. In the example shown the ,door check is mount- :edon the door, means of the foot' or bracket tothedoor and the link ispivoted by casing, and the'link carries an adjustable abutment member or stop cooperating with a non-adjustable. member on the pivot bolt; but it will be understood that various changes and rearrangements'of the device may be madewithout departing from the scope of the invention.
1 In the example shown the door 10 has mounted thereon a combined door check and closer 11,-of Well known type, having a crank arm 12, swiveled to a link 13 that carries a foot or bracket 14, appliedto the door casing 15. These parts are all for the most partofthe usual construction, and I'have not considered it necessary to illustrate either-the crank arm orwthe link in great detail, except for the swivel connection'between the two, inzwhich the present invention is embodied. The crank arm 12 has at itsouter end an enlargement or ear 16, and the link'has a cooperating'enlargement or ear 17, .said ears beingswi-veledtogether a bolt' 18, and having between them a chamber 19, in which the stop mechanism is arranged. The'bolt 18 is shown as being of square cross'section throughout a portion of its length, as shown at.20., It has a head '21, which isr preferably counter-sunk in-la I so he d in; place betwee them n. the
chamber 19, and in non-rotative engagement with the bolt. The opposing edgeser: faces of the two ears are preferably provided with coiiperating' circular rabbetslfi and 1%, so that one will be efiectively guid'eeb on the other, as: shown at 26, Withinthechamber L9 and cooperating with the. relativelyxfisxed cam- 23 is an adjustable stop or abutment member 27, In the form shownthisadjustable abutment partly embraces. theicam 23, and is adapted l to engage the side surfaceof the latter, saidiabutment-v being formed? asa part" of? a ring: The part may advantageously be-= semi-circular shape, and: its inner surfacefermed? to engaga the: side surface of the cam; frictional ly when the door isbpened, as hereinaiften described; The part 917 may; be adjusted toward the cam by means of two: adjusting screws. 28', which are scmw'ed laterally into-theeanLY, which is; provided with suitable sockets; for said screws. The innerends 28* 042 the screws extend into: notches 28 inthe outen part. of the abutment 27 said notchesbeing located on opposite sides respectively of the center of the abutment, anctitwil l be seen, there.- fib -rathat'by' manipulation of the adj usting screws the adjustable abutlnentl may bead j-usted' symmetrically veithi'respect to the cam.
When the door is closedr the narnow'part of the cam is opposite the abutment as shown Figz t, so that there is no-engagemer t between these two-parts. then, however, the dooris opened fthe wider part of the can and the: abutment arei so displaced angularl y with respect to the pivotal point of the two arms, that they; engage each other, as shown in Fig. 5. In the case illustrated the abutment engages one side ofthe cam when the doorcis opened, but in the case of a door of opposite hand the abntrnent engages the opposite side of the cam in an obvious manner, so that no adjustment is required for: conversion of t'hedevice. from. a. right hand.- to. ai-left hand step, and vice versa; I a
