CHESTER A. SAYBOLT, 01E PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO LOCKWOOJD FOLDING- BOX COMPANY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLV EASEL DISPLAY-CARTON.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 4, 1919.
Application filed May 13, 1918. serial No. 234,059.
To all wkom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHESTER A. SAYBOLT, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Easel Display-Cartons, of which the following is a. specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in an easel display carton, and it has for its primary object to provide a combined carton and easel support therefor foldable from a unitary blank in a simple and expeditious manner.
It is a further aim to provide a carton which so folds that when the blank is glazed or colored on one side only, the glazed finish will be presented over the entire inside and outside surface of the box or receptacle, leaving no unglazed part to view.
Further, the invention resides in the salient features of construction hereinafter described in detail and claimed in a succinct manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the completed carton having its easel support operative.
Fig. 2 is a rear elevation thereof.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal, vertical section therethrough.
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal, horizontal section through the carton on line 44 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5'- is a transverse section on line 55 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 6 is a plan view of the blank from which the carton is folded.
Fig. '7 is a fragmentary plan view of a modified form of the invention.
Fig. 8 is a perspective view of a carton embodying the modification and Fig. 9 is, a transverse sectlon on line 9-9 of Fig. 8 further illustrating theinvention.
Referring-more in detail to the drawin" the blank from which the preferred embodiment is folded-is substantially cruciform, comprising an exterior bottom section 1 having exterior side sections 2 joinedthereto by scored lines of fold 3, which side sections are in. turn connected to-interior side sections 4 by fold lines 5.
To the pp A os te ends of the exterior sides 2 are fold-a y joinedalonglines 6 end wall tained operative by an exterior end section 11 which is foldably joined to one end of bottom section 1, as at'12 and from this exterior end section 11 extends a strip like length of slightly narrower width, as indicated at 13, said strip being divided transversely by lines of fold 14 into an interior end section .15, an interior bottom section 16,
a second interior end section 17 and a display tab or sign card section 18.
The easel support for the carton comprises a leg section 19, joined to the opposite end of the bottom section 1 by fold line 20, a brace section 21, hingedly connected to section 19 at 22, and a locking tongue 23 of reduced width and joined to the section 21 by fold line 24. The sections 19 and 21 when operative provide a V-shaped easel support or leg for elevating the adjacent end of the carton and thereby dispose the latter at an inclination. To maintain the easel support sect-ions folded, the tongue 23 is inserted through a dovetail-shaped slit 25 in the bottom section 1, as depicted in Fig. 3.
In folding the carton from the blank shown in Fig. 6, the interior side sections 4 are initially folded over onto the, exterior section 11 is turned up against the outer oneand interior end section i5 is folded over and down between the side walls into contact with the inner wall section 7. This disposes the interior bottom member 16 down onto bottom member 1 and between the free edges of side section 4 to hold'them spaced apart. The interior end section 17 hes contact with the inner end wall section 8 and leaves the sign card or tab 18 extending well above the box. The easel support may now be folded under the carton and retained operative by inserting tongue 23 through slit 25.
The carton is now in its display form or the form in which its contents may readily be observed. In shipping the carton, the tongue 23 is removed from slit 25 and section 19 folded up against the outer end wall section 8. Section 21 is then folded together with tab 18 down into the box, after which the box may then be slipped into a tubular casing of rectangular section as indicated at 26 in Fig. 5.
The modified form obviates the necessity of an enveloping casing 26 by providing an integral cover consisting of a top section 27,
triangular side sections 28 and an end section 29. The side sections gradually increase in depth and at their outer edges carry flaps 30 formed with slots 31 and foldable over in front of end section 29, the freeend 32 of which is turned inwardly and upwardly against the flaps 30 with its corners engaged in the slots 31 to lock the sides and ends operatively. The fold lines-33 extend as continuatio'ns of the side edges of the easel support section v21, while transverse fold lines 3A divide off the flaps and end sections.
When folded, the cover extends well down over the carton at one end and efficiently serves to close the box. For use as a display carton the cover is removed on the weakened line 35, which defines the section 21 and tab 23, thereby leaving the carton equal to that shown in Figs. 1 to 6, inclusive.
A box constructed in accordance with this invention presents a like finish interiorly as well as exteriorly, even though one surface only of the stock be glazed or prepared. No gluing or other extra fastening means is employed and yet a strong, durable and rigid structure is obtained. The inclination at which the box is displayed maybe varied by lengthening or shortening the easel support. The carton and easel support are unitary, being folded from a single blank of stock.
