To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HAROLD EDWARD SHER WIN HOLT, Hon. Lieu-t. 001., a subject of the Kingof Great Britain and Ireland, whose post-office address is the Grange, F arnborough, Hampshire, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Razors, of which the following is a specification. V
This invention relates to safety razors in which a thin blade .is held between a. flat or curved guardend a flat or curved backing secured at right angles to a handle'or stem and has for its object to enable the handle and guard to be quickly detached from the backing to facilitate the cleaning of these parts and the blade after use, or with equal facility reattached and the blade positioned after the cleaning of-the parts.
For this purpose the backing plate is providedwith a short headed stem which proje'cts through openings in the blade and guard and is engaged by a pair of spring jaws carried on a spindle in the handle. The jaws are drawn into the handle by the action of a spring on the spindle and are projected from onehend of thg handle against the action of t e spring y operating a pressing knob or slide on the spindle.

In the cases where a curvature is to be imparted to the blade and the pressure of the spring is not sufficient for that purpose a pin may be provided on an extension of the knob to work in a cam slot in the handle in such manner that the knob can be forced out ward by hand and fixed.
Alternatively the spring jaws may be opera-ted by a sleeve arranged to slide on the handle and carrying an internal projection or tooth operating on the jaw spindle through a slot in the handle. I

A helical compression spring 70 on the spindle g bears with one end against a shoulder a in the bore of the handle 6 and with the other end against the knob It, so that the normal tendency of the spring is to pull the jaws f into the hollow handle. By pressing the knob into the handle and further compressing the spring the spindle y can be moved to project the jaws f from the handle to release the stem and'backing a, the jaws being arranged to move apart by their own spring action as they vemerge from the handle as will be readily understood. When it is desired to secure the backing in position it is only necessary to project the jaws as described, place them over the stem a and then release the pressing knob, allowing the spring to pull in the jaws which are simultaneously forced into locking engagement with the stem as they accommodate themselves to the diameter of the bore of the handle.
The operations of detaching the handle and guard from the blade and backing can in this case be carried out entirely with one hand, the handle being held between the fingers, while pressure is applied to the knob k with the thumb.
'In razors where the blade does not require of the usual central to be bent or curved it is easily secured by the force exerted by the spring 7:, but in razors where a curvature is imparted to the blade as shown in Figs. (3 and 7 by pressing it against a convex guard (Z the slot may have an inclined extension or cam slot j into which the pin 1' can be caused to enter by turning the knob. By means of the cam which is formed by a wall of the slot 7' additional force: can be applied to the spindle for bending the blade where the power of the spring is insuflicient for that purpose.
lVhat is claimed and desired to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a. safety razor, a tubular handle, a guard on the handle, a blade having an aperture therethrough and normally seated on said guard, a backing plate having a. stem and being normally seated on said blade and h i g its stem extending through said aperture into the handle, a pair of jaws normally held in engagement with said stem by means of said handle, and means cooperative with said handle and jaws and stem for pressing said backina )late on said blade, said means being opera le to effect the disengagement of said jaws from said stem.
2. In a safety razor, a tubular handle, a guard on the handle, a blade having an aperture therethrough and normally seated on said guard, a backing plate having a stem and being normally seated on said blade and having its stem extending through said aperture into the handle, a pair of jaws normally held in engagement with said stem by means of said handle, an actuating element engaged with said jaws and extending outward from one end of the handle, and a spring cooperative with said actuating element and handle and jaws to press said backing plate on said blade, said actuating element being operable to eiieet the disengagement of said jaws from said stem.
3. A safety razor comprising a tubular handle, a blade, a backing plate normally seated on the blade and having a short headed stem thereon, a spring-pressed spindle in the handle, and a pair of opposed spring gripping aws secured to said spindle and operable by the latter to project from the handle against the action of the spring and thus be positioned to engage or release the said short headed stem.
4. In a safety razor, atubular handle provided with a cam, a blade, a backing element normally seated on the "blade, a springpressed device engaged with said backing element and pressing the latter on said blade, and means extendingfrom said spring-pressed device into contact with said cam and being operable by a relative rotary movement of said device and said cam so as to effect an increase of pressure of said backing element on said blade.
