means which are hereinafter described and claimed, and which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a main or permanent number plate having an auxiliary changeable plate attached thereto; Fig, 2 is a front elevation of said main plate with the auxiliary plate detached; Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the main plate,
showing the securing-means thereon for said auxiliary plate; Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the rear face of the auxiliary plate; Fig. 5 is a view of one of the wedge keys before bending, and Fig. 6 is a view thereof after bending; and Fig. 7 is a fragmental view of parts of the main and auxiliary plates, showing the fastening means therefor.
he supplying of a large number plate each year is the cause of much expense to the authority licensing a vehicle, and it is my purpose to obviate most of this expense by using in connection with a permanent number plate, a small inexpensive auxiliary plate changeably mounted thereon, to contain only such related data as must be varied from time to time.
the space 3 on the main plate to remain thereduring the licensed period only, re-
placeable byanother plate at the beginning of another licensed perlod. I
In order to removably secure the plate 5 upon the plate 1, a pair of slots 4 are provided in the latter to receive therethrough lugs 8 formed on the former and bent rearwardly at a right angle thereto. Each lug 8 has a slot 9 also arranged at a right angle to the main plate.
Referring to Figs. 5 to 7 the numeral 10 denotes a triangular piece of metal, which when bent medially forms .a wedge-shaped split-key. This key is inserted in the slot 9 of the lug 8, after the lug has been passed through the slot 4: with its oblique edge positioned next to the rear face of the plate 1. When the key is pushed down its angle engages the rear face of the plate 1, thus drawing the plates together tightly, preventing chattering or rattling of the plates upon each other. The members of the split-key 10 are then spread apart, and its extremities may be bent upwardly over the side edges of the lug 8, as shown in Fig. 7, to lock them together, separably.
Since the auxiliary plate 5 has neither orifioes nor projections on its front face, when it is mounted by said securing means on the main plate 1, as shown in said Fig. 1, the assemblage presents a neat appearance, and the data 6 and 7, on the auxiliary plate can be given a striking and distinctive character. The employment of a permanent number 2 saves book-keeping incidental to periodical change of number, while the issuing of a small plate 5 instead for the changeable data is very economical for the licensing authority;
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let-.
ters Patent, is:
A main plate, an auxiliary plate, said main plate having slots therein, said auxiliary plate having longitudinally slotted integral lugs passed through the slots in the main plate, and wedge-shaped split-keys passed through the slots in said lugs to bear compressively upon the main plate, the ends of the keys being adapted to be spread apart and bent reversely about said lugs.
Signed at Waterloo, Iowa, this 17th dayof Sept, 1917.
GEORGE E. 'WACK.
