DUST-CAP FOR TIRE-VALVES OR THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 25, 1919.
Application filed May 18, 1917." Serial No. 169,384.
To all whom it may concern:
Be a ]mown' that I, Hem; P. mm, a
citizen of the United States of America, residing in Ridgewood, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Dust-Caps for Tire-Valves or the like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to dust caps for tire valves or the like, and aims to provide certain improvements therein.
The present invention is directed particularly to a dust cap for valves which are used in connection with wire wheels, wherein there is no wooden felly, the spokes of the wheel being connected directly to the'metalfall) rim. In this type of rim it has been cususe interchangeable valves .of different lengths with the result that with the shorter valves there is, of course, much less projection inwardly beyond the rim than with the larger valves. standard type of dust cap a long screwing operation is .necessary which in the .case of the larger sizes of valve becomes quite burdensome. According to the present invention I provide-a cap which may be applied tomary to bya short screwing operation and as easilywithlong valves as with short valves. .To this end. I provide a telescopic cap, the closed section of which. is adapted to screw onto the end of the body ofthe shell as distinguished from the nipple, and the 0 en section of which'is adapted to be exten ed along the closed section and to frictionally grasp the body of the valve shell to maintain it in position. v y
The invention also includes'othen features of improvement which-will be hereinafter more fully described.
Referring to the drawings 'which illustrate-one form ofthe invention Figure 1 is a view of the tire rim, partly in section, the valve shell being shown 1n elevation and the dust cap embodyin the present invention shown in diametrica section.
Fig. 1 the valve shellextends inwardly be- In' 'either' case in the quired to apply of a stop the cap can Fig. 2 is an elevation showing the cap as yond .the rim a considerably greater distance than in Fig. 2, due to the difference in 1 length of the two valves.
erably arranged within the sleeve section and 1s provided with an internal screwthread H which engages the thread on the valve shell or casing. The sleeve section G 'is adapted to telescope with the cap section and is preferably provided at itsinner end with a frictional means adapted to slide along the exterior of the valve casing and hold its position by frictional engagement.
In the construction shown this isprovided by-forming the end of the sleeve section with a reduced portion I which is slotted to form spring arms J. The screw-threaded exterior of the valve casing rovides a surface which is well adapted or a frictional engagement with the sleeve.
Preferably in order to reduce the cap to a minimum, the screw-threaded ortion H is made short and is arranged wit in the cap section F at a considerable distance from the end K t reof. Between the end and the screw-thread the diameter of. the cap section is enlarged so that -'it will slip over the casing without requiring to be rotated. It is preferable also that the cap section shallbe provided with a stop which will limit its onward movement upon the valve shell. The simplest form of stop is that shown in which the metal beyond the end of the thread L prevents the further screwin on of the cap section. This is so arranged t at the cap section will not interfere with the valve cap M. By the use only be screwed on a few turns which enables it to be seated in position with-rapidity, and the stop also enables the cap section to be tightened in place the rev so that it w1ll not work loose in use. In or- 1 the cap section always occupies a definite position with regard to the'outer end of the valve shell, irrespective of the length of the latter. When this is adjusted in place the sleeve G is slid down until its end I con-' The cap is hence tacts with the rim nut.
- securely held against loss by a screw-threaded connection while. at the same time it is capable of expanding and contracting in length, and in any position forms an efficient dust-excluding casing for the valve stem.
While I have shown and described one vention.
What I claim is 1. A dust cap comprising a cap portion havin an internal screw-thread, and an adjustab le telescopic portion held in place by frictional engagement having means at its inner end for engaging a valve shell, said means being adapted to slide along the valve shell. I
. 2. A dust cap comprising a cap portion having an internal screw-thread, and a telescopic portion having means at its inner end for engaging a valve shell, said means A and a contracted adapted to slide on said cap portion and held in place by frictional engagement.
4:. A dust cap comprising a cap portion having an internal screw-thread adapted to engage a valve shell, a stop for limiting the onward movement of said cap portion, and
a telescopic portion sliding on said cap portion, and havlng means for frictionally engaging a valve shell.
5. A dust cap having a screw-threaded cap portion and a telescoping portion sliding on said cap portion, said telescoping portion having sprin arms adapted tofrictionally engage a va ve shell.
6. A dust cap having a cap portion F having a'flange O and internal screw-thread H, and a sleeve portion G having a flange P portion I formed with spring arms. a
In witness whereof, I have hereunto signed my name.
' HENRY P. KRAFT.
