To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, RALPH F. KNIGHT, a citizen lof the United States, residin at Beverly, in the county of Essex and tate of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sewing-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to sewing machines such as may 'be used for finishing buttonholes, and by which the thrum ends and stay cord are gathered in line and are stitched to the un-der face of the work between the ends of the buttonholes by blind stitches.
One object of the invention is to provide novel and improved thread guiding means which will prevent the drawing of slack or surplus thread from the thread sup-ply bobbin or spool by the sudden pull put` on the thread in starting the machine. To these ends the invention comprises the features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter described and set forth in the claims.
The invention will be readily understood from an inspection vof the accompanying drawings and the following detailed description of the mechanism illustrated therein.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a buttonhole nisbing machine provided with the present improvements in their preferred forms; Fig. 2 is an end elevation looking toward the right in Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a detail view of the thread guiding plate.
In the drawings the invention is shown as embodied in a buttonhole finishing ma- -chine having the same general construction and mode of operation as the machine shown and described in Patent No. 1,080,341, dated December 2, 1913. In this machine the sewing` mechanism comprises a horizontally reciprocating and laterally movable needle 2 and a coperating shuttle 4. The work is supported on a work support 6 above the path of the needle, and prior to each reciprocation of the needle is forced downward by a bender 8 into a recess 10 to bring a fold in the work into the needle path.
The bender is mounted in the front end of the bender arm 12, and may be adjusted vertically by a screw, the lower part of which is provided with a left-hand thread engaging the bender while the upper part is provided with a right-hand thread engaging a boss on the bender arm. The screw is provided at its upper end with a knurled head 16 by which it may be manipulated in adjusting the bender. The bender is clamped in adjusted position by a clamping screw 18.
The thread supply bobbin is supported on a horizontal spindle 22 arranged centrally within a cylindrical thread supply box 24 which is provided at its front end with a pivoted conical cap 26. The thread from the thread supply cop leads horizontally through the cap 26 to a series of thread guiding holes 28 formed inaguideplate 80. The plate is in the form of a long narrow strip which is provided near its outer end with ears 32 by which it is pivoted to the outer end of the supply box cap 26. The outer end of the guide plate is bent down into position directly above the tension 34 through which the thread leads to the sewing mechanism, while its inner end rests on the base of the cap 26 so that the plate is supported in fixed position during the sewing. The irst of the series of thread holes in the plate is substantially in line with the spindle 22, so that the thread will draw readily ofi" of the end of the thread cop. The thread is laced back and forth through the holes in the plate so that a drag is put on the thread between the sewing mechanism and thread supply which will avoid pulling surplus thread from the supply in starting the machine, and will tend to equallize the tension during the sewing. The number of times the thread is 'passed back and forth through the guide plate may be varied in accordance with the character of the thread. In threading the guide plate, it may be swung about its pivotal support to give convenient access to the initial thread holes therein.
While it is preferred to employ the specific -construction and arrangement of parts shown and described, it will be understood vthat this construction `and arrangement is found desirable or best suited to the construction of the machine in which the invention is to be embodied.
Having explained the nature and object of the invention, and speciically described one form of mechanism in which it may be embodied, what is claimed is l. A sewing machine, having, in combination, a sewing mechanism, a thread supply box, a support for the thread supply therein, a thread guide plate mounted on the box and provided with a series of holes through which-thethread between the supply and sewing mechanism passes back and forth from one side to the other of the plate on its way to the sewing mechanism. 1

A sewing machine, having, in combination, a sewing mechanism, a thread supply box, a support for the thread supply therein, a thread platemovably mounted on the box and provided with a1 series of holes through whichthe thread passes back and forth from one side to the other of the plate on its way to the sewing mechanism.

A sewing machine, having, in combination, a sewing mechanism, a thread supply box, a. horizontal spindle therein for supporting` the thread supply, a thread guide plate having a portion extendinginto substantial alinement with the spindle and provided with a series of holes through which the thread passes back and forth from vone side to the other of the plate on its way to the sewing mechanism.V
