Be it known that I, GEORGE W. PIERCE, a citizen'of theUnited States, and resident of Anderson, in` theY county of Madison and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Speed-Governors, of which the following is a speciiicat1on.
This inventionrelates to certain improvements in speed limiting` devices and more particularly to that type of engine governor disclosed and claimed in my co-.pending application Serial No. 122,197,'iled September 26, 1916.
My present invention involves certain improvements in the means for regulating the tension of the spring which counter-acts the centrifugally actuated device and prevents the operation of the latter below a predetermined speed.
The object of my 'present invention is to so position the spring and so construct the tension regulating means as to permit of a smaller and more compact casing; to more eiliciently seal the spring regulating means;

employ a conduit section 10 provided with a tubular sleeve or extension 11 on one side and integral therewith. Supported by and infaxial alinementwith this extension or sleeve, is a cylindrical casing including two rigidly connected parts 12and 13. Within the casing part 13 is a centrifugally actuated device including a pair of weights 14 the transversely extending arms 15 of a hollow shaft 16. The details of construction herein illustrated are substantially the same as those illustrated inV my copending application above referred to except that the casing is materially shorter and the spider 19 which carries the bearings for one end of the hol- Alow shaft comes closely adjacent the end wall of the casing section 12 by reason of the change in the location and method of adjustment ofthe spring constituting the main features of my present invention. Within the conduit section l0 is a throttle valve 20 and upon the shaft or arbor of the latter is a pinion 2l meshing with a rack bar 22 rigidly connected with the valve rod 23 abutting against the end of the pin 17 The outward movement of the centrifugal weights thus moves the rack bar towardv the left from the position shown in Fig. 2 andv rotates the throttle valve toward closed position..
s an important feature of mypresent -invention, I rigidly connect a sleeve 25 to the opposite end of the extension 1l from the casing and serving to inclose a regulating spring26 and an adjusting device 27.,.for the latter. The outer end of the sleeve 2t' is of slightly reduced diameter and within its' reduced portion is threaded ajpliig 27. This plug is in alinement with the valve rod 23 and the coil spring is mounted between the end of the rack bar and the plug and encircles portions of each so as to remain in place and normally tend to move the rack bar toward the right from the position The plug is shown as being provided with a. collar or flange 28 against which one end ofthe spring may seat.
The outer end of the tension regulating plug 27 is slotted and the portion in which it is mounted is provided with a pair of diametrically opposed apertures 29 which register with the twice during each rotation of the plug. The outer end of the sleeve 25 is provided with a cap 30 which prevents the threads at the end of the plug 27 from being dirt or other foreign substance. It has apertures which mayregister with the aper-V tures 29.

When it is desired to regulate the tension oit the spring, the cap 30 may be removed and a screw driver inserted in the end ot the sleeve and into the slot of the plug 27 to rotate the latter in either direction. When the desired adjustment has been secured, the plug is left with the slot in registry with. the apertures 29 and the cap 30 is placed in position with its apertures in registry with the apertures 29. Solder may then be poured in through the apertures to positively prevent the removal of the cap or. the rotation of the plug, or instead of using solder, aA vWire may be threaded through the apertures and slot and its ends may he connected together by a lead seal or in any other suitable manner.; t will be noted that the Wire not only prevents the removal Aof the cap but also prevents any accidental rotation of the tension regulatinplug.
he spring operates by compression rather than by tension as in the device shown in my companion application, and as it comes at the opposite side of the device from the casing, it is more readily accessible. Furthermore, a screw driver may readily he applied to adjust the position of Athe plug when required. l
