Be it known that I, OswAiiD Si KUNKELY, a citizen of the United Stateaand a resident of the city of New York, borough of Bronx,
in the county of Bronx and State ofNew York, have invented a new vand lmproved Labeling-Machine, of which thefollowing is a description.
My invention relates to a label-aliixing machine and more particularly to a machine for affiXing labels to the Aopposite ends of K.a roll of ribbon or tothe ends of a round box, carton, or the like.

llll) In carrying out my invention in accordance with the illustrated example, a suitable frame 10 is provided, mounted on which are two similar machine structures 11, each with its full complement of devices, said machines being adjustable-` to or from each other'to accord witha roll or the like of a given length, there being shown for the purpose depending brackets 12 on structures 11 slidable on guide rods 13 supported at their ends in the frame 10. The structures 11 at their opposed ends present members forming jointly a trackway 14 to receive the ends of the rolls A, which latter are fed as by an attendant to said trackway. The trackway is continued downwardly to form a vertical drop 15 between the two machines to permit the foremost roll to finally rest in a cradle 16 composed of separate side members adjustable toward and from each other with the adjustment of the structures 11, the cra dle being furthermore vertically adjustable as hereinafter explained to accord with a given diameter of the rolls, or other articles being labeled. yThe cradle is mounted on' a longitudinal rock shaft 17 andthe upper portion thereof presents curved surfaces 18, the curves being struck freni the center of the shaft 17 or approximately so to cause the surfaces ofthe cradle to pass Vbeneath the next uppermost roll and support the same as the lowermost labeled roll is discharged.
Label holders 19 are provided at the topl of each machine structure 11 at opposite sides of the trackway 14 and dip slightly toward the latter. The label holders 19 are cylindric to accord with round labels usually applied to rolls and the foremost labelV is detached by a revoluble device 20 that intermittently wipes past the mass of labels in each holder to detach the foremost label. The wiping devices have Va covering 21 of rubber as indicated in Fig. 3 and to coactl therewith a friction device 22 is provided at the forward end of each holder 19 at the under side to insure that the detaching wiper 20 will effectively engage the front label. The detached label drops to an inclined chute 23 presenting channeled side members, the label finally coming to rest inl a vertical receiver 24 constituting the lowei` terminal of the chute 23.
VThe label paste is applied to the ends of the roll and not to the label. and for .the purpose al pasting device designated generally by the numeral 25 is given a rectilineal reciprocating movement in the manner hereinafter explained to ydeposit paste onto one roll in the drop 15 when the cradle 16 is at rest. In the arrangement illustrated two rolls A, as best seen in Figs. 3 and 4 are temporarily super-imposed and at rest on the roll which is at rest in the cradle. The roll thus pasted finally reaches the cradle by the. successive discharge of the two rolls in advance, and, timed with the pasted` roll reaching the cradle, the label B previously arriving at the holder 24 is displaced and pressed home onto the pasted rolly through the action of a presser head 26 hereinafter moreparticularly referred to, which has a rectilineal reciprocating movement as hereinafter explained.
The drive means include a drive shaft 27 here shown as having a pulley 28 to receive power from a belt from any convenient source (not shown).
To rock the cradle 16 for discharging thelabeled roll, use is made in the present instance of cams 29 on the drive shaft 27, each cam acting' against a friction roller 30 on a lever 31 fulcrumed' as at 32 on the frame. Each lever 31 ispivotally connected at its lower end as at 33 with one end of a link 34, the opposite end' ofthe link being pivotally connected as at 35 with a rocker arm 3G on a hub 37 rigid on the cradle shaft 17 forV rocking said cradle through the action ofA the cams 29- and' the described connections.,
To limit the rockingmovement of the cradle use is made of stop arms 39 on the hub 37 adapted in the rocking of the shaft 17 toter to support the outer end of the chute.
The adjustment of the general structures 11 toward or from each other is effected in the illustrated example as follows: Depending brackets 45 on each structure 11 have the heads 46 'thereof bored and internally threaded to receive the right and left threads on a screw rod 47. Said screw rod has suitable bearings in the frame 10 at the ends of the latter and is provided with a crank handle 48 or like means to *turn it in either direction to cause the engagement with the heads 46 of the brackets 45 to move the structures 11 oppositely, as desired, to give fthe track 14 and drop 15 a width to suit aparticular length of roll. The shifting of the structures 11 is caused to correspondingly adjust the cradle by moving the separate sides thereof toward or from each other, for which purpose in the form shown, shifting forks 49 are rigidly secured said head for roll, in the cradle 16, will aline with the label-aiixing head `26 and another roll will properly aline with the paste device 21, use

3. A suitable handle 62'is provided and the holder is slotted lengthwise at the to to accommodate the weight 60 and the said handle. The labels, the follower 63 and the weight 60 are passed into theholder from the rear or detaching device 20 under the pressure of the weight 60 traveling down the inclined label holder.
rThe details of the friction device 22 are as follows: The same is generally in the form of a continuous rubber band which passes about a `cross bar 64E at the forward end of the label holder 19 at thebottoin of the latter so that the label will be caught between said band and the rubber surface of the rotating device 20. Tension is supplied to the band 22 by a screw rod 65 turning in brackets 66 of the structure l1 and having a set nut 67. Said screw rod has a cross head 68 about which the band 22 passes. Thus, the band may be shifted on presenting a different wearing surface at the forward working end.`
The labeldetaching device 20 is secured to a transverse shaft 69 turning in bearings in the ends of a frame presenting side bars 70 slidable in fixed guide ears 7l and in order that said side bars may tudinally to vary the position of the device 20 to properly engage a label, the rear ends of the side bars 70 are rigid with a cross bar 72, thro-ugh which an adjusting screw 73 passes and is provided with a hand wheel 74C or the like for turning it. `Said screw passes also through a rigid cross bar76 of j the stiaicture 11 `whereby the turning of the screw will shift the side bars 70 and the shaft 69 and device 20. The rods 88 are part of the paste boX carfier and have sliding guided movement in fixed bearings 96, 97 on the structure 11. Compression springs 98 are coiled about the rods andbear at one end against the bearings 96 and at their other ends against set collars 99 for varying the tension of the springs.v I provide means to actuate the carrying frame of the paste box in consonance with the movements of the labelaiixing head 26 to therebyinsure proper sequence of their operations for which purpose a pen'dulous .device is employed in the yform advantageously of rods 100 pivoted lat their upper ends as at 101 and made rigid with a cross bar or girt 102, said pendulous spots corresponding the outlet holes 90a.
vdevice being adapted to be actuated directly withthe movement of the presser head 26 'tively actuated as hereinafter explained, whereby the pendulous device is given an intermittent vibratory movement. A yieldable connection is established between the pendulous device 100 and the carrying frame of the paste boX by the following means: A link 103 is pivoted at one end as at 104 to the girt 102 and at its opposite end as at 105 with a pin or draw bar ',106 which passes freely through a cross bar 107 rigid with the side rods 88. Said draw bar 106 has coiled thereon a compression spring 108 and is threaded to receive a wing nut 109 or the like to vary the tension of said spring. The arrangement is such that as the pendulous device 100 is swung forwardly by the means hereinafter described, it will carryforwardly the girt 102 thereon and through the link 108, draw bar 106 and cross bar 107, the side rods 88 will be carried forwardly to advance the paste device 25 yto apply the paste to the roll. The forward movement of the rods 88 will place the springs 98 under compression to return device andy its carrier, The power of the spring 108 in practice 1s superior to that of the-springs 98 and `ordinarily said the paste spring 108 will not yield. If, however, the forward movement of the paste device or its carrier frame is obstructed then the pendulous device 100 with the girt 102, link 103 and draw bar 106 may respond to a forward impulse given said pendulous device, the spring 108 yielding to the undue strain.
The label-aiiixing head 26 is positively driven, the transverse shafts 8O being utilized for the purpose. On each shaft 80 is a cam 110 operating against a friction roller 111 on a slidable presser bar 112 carrying said head 26. A compression spring 113 is coiled about the presser bar 112, said spring abutting at one end against a standard 11*l through which the presser bar has guided movement, the opposite end of the spring bearing against a set collar 114 for varying the tension of the spring. In asecond standard 11b through which the presser head 1.12 passes is a pin'115 which is received in a longitudinal slot 116 in said presser bar, whereby to limit the retrograde movement of the presser bar under the reaction of the spring 113. The head 26 is carried by a shank 117 which has sliding movement in an bore receives a coil spring 118 tending to press the head 26 outwardly, the outward movement being limited by a pin 119 in the standard 11, said pin being accommodated in a longitudinal slot 120 in the presser bar 112. A pilot pin 121 is seated against a spring 122 in an axial pocket in the shank 117, the spring tending normally to maintain the pilot pin projecting beyond the face of the head 26 (see Figs. 3 and 8 to 10)` The head 26 is threaded onto the shank 117 and is held in adjusted position by a set nut 123. lVith the described arrangement when a forward movement is imparted to the presser bar 112 by the cam 110,the spring 113A is compressed and the head 26 is advanced until the pilot pin 121 contacts with the label B which is at rest in the holder 24, thereby displacing said label, pressing its central portion against the roll A in the cradle 16. Vith the continued advance of the head 26 the pilot pin 121 will recede within the plane of the head 26 and the latter will firmly press the label against the end of the roll as indicated in Figs. 8 and 10. The reaction of the spring 113 will retract the presser bar 112 and head 26 when permitted to do so by the revolving of the cam 110. If any obstruction is offered to the normal forward movement of the head 26, the resistance of the spring 118 will be overcome, thereby preventing damage. Said spring 118 also insures proper contact of the label with the roll by always affording the desired degree of elasticity to the parts. In `the meantime the supply of rolls will fill the vertical drop or guideway 15, the lowermost roll being in the cradle 16 and therebeing two supenposed rolls at `rest above the one in the cradle. i I would state in conclusion that while'the illustrated example constitutes a practical embodiment of my invention, I do not limit `myself strictly tothe` mechanical 4details 'herein illustrated, since manifestly the same can be considerably varied withoutfdeparw "ture from the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, l claim as new, and desire to secure by lietters Patent: i
1. A labeling machine for rolls andthe like, including a roll holder, a guideway through which therolls may move under their own weight to said holder, said guideway being adapted to temporarily accommodate rolls additional to the one in the holder, a roll-pasting device adjacent to said guideway and adapted to have rectilineal reciprocating movement relative to the i guideway and transversely thereto, a label rest adjacent to and in register with said roll holder, av guideway through which .a label may drop under its own weight and in its own plane to saidlalbelrest, a labelaffixing device adjacent to said label rest and adapted to have rectilineal reciprocating movement relatively to said label rest and i toward and from the said roll holder, means to intermittently cause the labeled roll to be discharged from said roll holder, and means for actuating in unison said roll-pasting device and said label-affixing device between the intermittent discharging movements of the labeled rolls.
2. 7. In a labeling machine having a guideway for the articles to be labeled and in which the articles are caused to intermittently advance; a paste device, means to give rectilineal reciprocating movement to the paste device transversely of the guideway to apply paste to an article in the latter, said paste device including a head to deposit the paste, said head having a paste outlet, a pilot pin normally projecting beyond said head to contact with the article and ,adapted to recede with the advance of the head against the article, and a valve adapted to be actuated by said pin and controlling said outlet; together with means to apply a label to the pasted article.
8. In a labeling machine having a guideway for the travel of the articles to be labeled, a paste box, a carrier for said box adapted to have rectilineal reciprocating movement to and from said guideway to deposit paste onto an article presented thereto in the guideway, a spring-pressed pilot pin normally projecting beyond said paste box and adapted to recede upon engaging the article to be pasted, and a valve controlling the outlet of paste from the box and subject to a receding movement of the pilot pin; together with means to apply a label to the pasted article.
9. In a labeling machine, a paste box, a carrier for said box adapted to have rectilineal reciprocating movement toward and from the guideway, means to position in front of the paste box an article to receive paste, means to actuate said carrier, valve means to control the outiow of paste from the paste box, and a spring-pressed pilot movable forwardly with the paste box and adapted to recede relatively to the paste box to permit the latter to engage the article, the receding` of the pilot serving to actuate said valve' means; together with means to apply a label to the pasted article.

In a labeling machine, a paste device adapted to have rectilineal reciprocating movement, means to position an article in front of thev paste device, to receive paste from the latter, a frame carrying said paste device, means to actuate the frame in a forward direction, a spring to return the frame after a forward movement, said spring being adapted to be placed under tension by said forward movement of the frame, and a second spring interposed between the frame and said actuating means, said second spring being superior to the first spring and adapted to yield to undue resistance oered' to the vforward movement of the carrier frame; together with means to apply alabel to the pasted article.V

In a labeling machine, a device to apply paste to the article to be labeled, a label-a )plying device, a label rest in front of the label-applying device, means to cause articles to be labeled to be positioned in succession in front of the labeling device and the label rest, means to give rectilineal reciprocating movement to said label-applying device, a pendulous device connected with the paste device, and means to give a forward movement to the pendulous device by the forward movement of the label-applying device.
13. A labeling machine including a holder adapted to receive an article to be labeled, a guideway for the travel of the articles to said holder, a paste-applying device adapted to have rectilineal reciprocating move ment relatively to said guideway to deposit paste on an article therein before the article reaches said holder, a label-applying device adapted to have rectilineal reciprocating movement relatively to said holder, and means to adjust said holder relatively to the rectilineal path of the label-applying device to accord with articles of a given size, said paste device including a paste-applying head, and means to adjust said head on said label-applying device and relatively to the rectilineal path of the latter to accord with a given adjustment of said holder and without varying' the said rectilineal path of the paste device as a Whole.

In a labeling machine, a guidevvay for the articles to be labeled, a holder adapted to receive a supply of separate labels, said holder being disposed transversely to said guideway, a label rest below said holder, a chute leading from the label holder to said rest, means at the upper end of said chute to feed the labels in single succession from said chute, a rockable cradle in front of the label rest, to which cradle said guideway leads, a paste-supplying device at a side of said guideway adapted to deposit paste on an article before reaching the cradle, a label-applying device adjacent to the label rest and movable through the latter toward and from the cradle to displace a label from said rest and apply it to the article in the cradle, a drive shaft, means actuated by said drive shaft and actuating the cradle to intermittently rock the same for discharging the labeled article, and means to actuate the paste device and label-applying device while the cradle is at rest.

In a labeling machine employing a device to apply paste to the articles to be labeled and employing means to apply la bel-s to the pasted articles; a chute through which labels may drop to a position to be engaged by the label-applying means, an inclined holder adapted to receive a supply of separate labels, means to press the labels forwardly in said holder, the front end of said holder lying adjacent to the upper end of the chute, a revoluble label detaching device adapted to intermittently have a wiper movement past the front end of said holder to detach the labels in succession to permit them to drop into said chute, and a friction device on the front end of the holder at the under side to afford a yielding resistance to the pressure exerted on `the label by said label-detaching device.

In a labeling machine, an inclined label holder adapted to receive a supply of separate labels, means to press said labels forwardly in the holder, elements projecting forwardly into the holder at the front end thereof at each side adapted to bear endwise against the front label in the holder, said elements being adjustable to extend more or less into the holder, and means in front of the holder to detach the labels from the supply in single succession from the supply in the holder; together with means to cause delivery of an article to be labeled, and means to apply the detached label to said article.
17. In a labeling machine, label-applying means and means to discharge a labeled article from the machine, said last-mentioned means including' a cradle for said article, a rock shaft on which the cradle is mounted, bearings in which said rock shaft turns, means to adjust said bearings to vary the positions of the cradle and the label-applying means, a drive shaft, a lever subject to said drive shaft, and a link connection between said lever and said rock shaft; said link connections being adapted to accommodate themselves to an adjusting movement of said bearings.
