PATENT OFFICE.
PATRICK KENNY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT m APPARATUS FOR smesme HOGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 129,481, dated July 16, 1872.
Specification describing a new and useful Improvement in Singeing Hogs, invented by PATRICK KENNY, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois.
Figure 1 is a top view of my improved apparatus, partly in section, to show the construc- Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view of the same taken through the line 00 m, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view of one of the furnaces. 7
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved mode of and apparatus for singeing hogs to remove the bristles, hair, and other matters from the carcass preparatory to dressing it; and it consists in the mode of doing this and in the construction of the apparatus for carrying it into practical effect, as hereinafter more fully described.
A represents a number of furnaces for burning coke or other flame-producing fuel, which fuel rests upon a grate, a placed in the lower part of the furnaces A. In the top or upper part of the furnaces A are formed openings,
closed by closely-fitting doors a for the convenient introduction of the fuel. In the bottom or lower part of the furnaces A are formed openings closed by sliding or other closely-fitting doors a for the withdrawal of the ashes, Cinders, and unoonsumed fuel, when desired. The furnaces A I prefer to arrange in a circle, as shown in Fig. 1, leaving a space between them for the carcass of the hog. In the inner side of the furnace A are formed holes or openin gs a*, through which the flames escape and B is a fan-blower placed in any convenient position and driven by any convenient power. From the fan-blower B pipes 0 lead to the furnaces, so as to in troduce a strong current of air into them.
When in use the furnaces A are tightly closed at all points except the openings or, through which the flames are forcedout upon the carcass of the hog as the said carcass is raised and lowered or moved past said openings. The hog is raised and lowered by means of a chain, D, passing over a pulley suspended from abeam, bar, or part of the frame-work of the building. The chain 13 is connected with a Windlass or other suitable power.
The furnaces A may stand upon pillars, the floor, or other suitable supports, according to the construction of the building.
The carcass, after being thoroughly singed, may be removed above, below, or between the furnaces, as may be most convenient.
In view of the previous use of a furnace for thispurpose,1 do not claim the above-described mode of operation broadly; but
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The herein described and illustrated method of singeing hogs,- the same consisting in exposing them to a jet or jets of flame from a furnace containing ignited fuel, within whose circular inclosure they are suspended in any suitable manner, said jet or jets being produced at will, or of a varying force or intensity, by means of a blower and a suitable arrangement of tubes, substantially as specified.
2. The furnaces A-one or moreprovided with tightly-covered openings a a to admit fuel and remove ashes, cinders, 850.; an opening or openings, 0%, for the escape of the flames, and with pipes 0 leading from a fan-blower, B, to adapt them for use in singeing hogs, substantially as herein shown and described.
