BOTTLE-STOPPER EXTRACTOR.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, PEARL SHIPLEY and KILBY FARRAR, citizens of the United States, residing at London in the county of Madison and State of tain new and useful Improvements in Bottle-Stopper Extractors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to bottle stopper extractors, and has for its primary object to provide a simple and useful tool for facilitating the removal of a stopper from an associated bottle neck, in a convenient and expeditious manner.
Another object of the invention is to provide an extractor of this character with improved means for preventing the breaking or disintegration of a cork stopper while the latter is being withdrawn from a bottle neck through the use of said tool, the latter object being chiefly accomplished through the provision of a sliding needle member carried by the tool and which is adapted to penetrate the body of the stopper so that the latter will be braced or strengthened when the withdrawal thereof is being effected.
With these and other objects in view, as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention accordingly consists in the novel features of construction, combination of ele ments, and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described in the following description and having the scope thereof indicated in the claim hereunto appended.

Referring more particularly to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the tool or stopper extractor comprising the preferred form of the invention. The same consists, in this instance, of a handle portion 2, which is formed from any desired material and of any preferred design. The lower end of the handle is socketed, as shown, for the reception of the securing extremity 3 of a metallic shank or web member 4. the handle 1 and the portion 4.- may be formed integral, however, the form of the tool illustrated has been found in practice to give very satisfactory service.
Integrally formed with the lower edge of the shank portion 4, and situated substantially centrally thereof is a curved stopper engaging prong or claw 5, which latter has its inner end spaced from one of the outer edges of the portion 4 to provide a fulcrum shoulder 6, and that part of the shank portion 4 disposed on the opposite side of the clawl 5 forms a base portion 7, which is adapted to bear upon the upper surface of a cork 8.
From the foregoing it will be seen that when it is desired to extract the cork 8 from the neck 9 of a bottle, the portion 5 is forced into the 'body of said cork until the shoulder 6 engages with the upper edge of the neck 9. Then by revolving the handle 2, using the shoulder 6 as a fulcrum, said cork may be readily extracted from the bottle neck by virtue of the curved formation of the portion 5 and due to the location of the latter within said stopper. In order to prevent the stopper 8 from breaking or disintegrating by reason of the pressure exerted upon the same through the provision of the curved claw 5, said shank portion 4; is provided with an eye or bail member 10, in which is slidably positioned a needle element 11. The latter is secured in sliding relation with the tool 1 by forming said needle with an enlarged body portion 12, in which is provided an elongated slot 13. Carried by the handle 2 is a headed stud 14, which is positioned with in the slot 13 so as to control the sliding movements of the needle element 11. A manipulating handle 15 is formed upon the upper end of the body portion 12 and provides convenient means for effecting the reciprocation of said element.
In operation after the portion 5 has been inserted into the cork 8, and the shoulder 6 brought to bear upon the upper edge of the neck 9, said needle element is then forced into the body of the stopper 8, as shown in Fig. 1, so as to extend adjacent to said portion 5. It will now be seen that when the handle 2 is rocked, the stopper 8 will be reinforced or braced by the location of the element 11, so that the breaking or disintegration of said cork will be effectively prevented. If the cork 6 happens to protrude above the level of the neck 9, the curved under edge of the claw portion 5 may be employed as a fulcrum in lieu of the shoulder 6,
as Will be clearly understood.
It Will thus be seen that there is provided a tool for quickly and conveniently effecting the removal of a cork from the neck of a bottle and one wherein the breaking up of a cork into sections or particles will be obviated. If desired the shank l may be formed with a curved finger 16, so that the tool may be employed in efi'ecting the removal of a metallic bottle cap.
