GATE.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN W. HAWKINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at il/luni'ordville, in the county of Hart and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Gate, of which the following is a specification.
This invention aims to improve the construction of a gate, to improve the means for mounting and controlling the gate, and to provide novel means whereby the gate will tend to swing to a closed position. Within the scope of what is claimed, a mechanic may effect changes, without departing from the spirit of the'invention.
In the drawings,Figure 1 is an elevation wherein parts appear in section; Fig. 2 is a section on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a. top plan; Fig. 1 is a section on the line H of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a section on the line 55 of Fig. 1; Fig. 6 is a diagram illus trating one of the operations of the gate.
The invention comprises a gate 1 including a top bar 2, a bottom bar 3, intermediate bars 4 and 5, and any desired number of intermediate bars 7, an intermediate bar 6 being located immediately below the bar 2, the bar 5 being located immediately above the bottom bar 3. The intermediate bars extend between uprights 8 at the forward end of the gate, the bars 3, aand 2 being prolonged beyond the uprights, as shown respectively at 9", 9 and 9 A side piece 10 is connected to one upright 8 in horizontal alinement with the bar 1 and is connected to that bar, and to the bar 9 by an upright strip 11, there being a side piece, like the side piece 10, individual to the projecting end 9 of the bar 3. A side strip 12, corresponding to the side piece 10, projects from one upright 8 in alinement with the bar 2, the parts 12 and 9 being connected by an end plate 14. An upright latch v15 operates in the rectangles defined by the parts 9, 11 and 10, 9 14 and 12, and 9, 11 and the part individual to the end 9 and corresponding to the side piece 10. The lower end of the latch 15 is mounted on a pivot element 16 carried by the end 9 and its side piece (note the part 10). A spring is interposed between the upper end of the latch 15 and the uprights 8 and is denoted bythe numeral 17.

19 at the extreme rear end of the gate. -Diagonal braces 20 are located on opposite sides of the longitudinal gate bars and extend between the uprights 8 and 18. Blocks or guides 21 are held between the uprights 18 and the bars 2 and 6 and between the uprights 19 and said bars. held between the bars 2 and 6 in spaced relation to the uprights 18. A hinge member, in the form of a rod 23 is mounted for longitudinal sliding movement in the blocks 21 and 22 and is provided at its outer end with an eye 24. A looped flexible element 25 passes slidably through an opening 26 formed in the hinge rod 23 between the block 22 and the uprights 18, the ends of the flexible element being connected at 27 to the braces 20. One or more turn buckles may be interposed in the flexible element 25. Blocks 28 are located between the uprights 18 and 19 and the bars 5 and 3, there being a block '29 located between the braces 20 and the bars 3 and 5. A hinge rod 30 passes through the blocks 28 and 29 and is held to the block 29 and the braces 20 by means of a securing device 31. The hinge member 30 has an eye 32. The gate 1 carries, at its upper edge, a rearwardly projecting extension 33. A cross arm 34 is secured to the gate 1 at the lower inner corner of the gate.
The numeral 35 denotes a suspension post, and side posts 36 are provided, the posts 35 and 36 being connected by a rail 38, and the inner edges of the post 35 being beveled as shown at 37. The post 35 carries hinge pintles 39, which, coiiperating with the eyes 24 and 32, form a hinged mounting for the gate 1.
A post 40 is provided, and carries a keeper 41 having a seat 42 adapted to receive the latch 15, under the action of the spring 17, to hold the gate closed. There are similar keepers 51 on the posts 36, having notches 52 which receive the latch 15, to hold the gate 1 open. Flexible elements 43 are connected at 44 to the upper end of the latch 15 and extend longitudinally of the gate 1, the flexible elements being rove around sheaves 45 on the extension 33, and being extended, in opposite directions, long the rail 38, through guides 16 on the outer ends of the rail, the depending extremities of the flexible elements carrying weights 47.
.By drawing on the ends of the flexible elements 43-, the latch. 15 may be disengaged A block 22 is I from the keeper 41 on the post 10, and the gate may be swung, in either direction, to an open position. When the gate is opened, the latch 15 coacts with the keepers 51 on the posts 36 to hold the gate open. The latch 15 may be disengaged from the keepers 51, by drawing on the flexible elements 43, and then the gate 1 will swing to a closed position, automatically, owing to an operation now to be set forth.

upper inner corner of the gate 1 is carried inwardly toward the post 35, as shown in Fig. 6, and the gate is so disposed that, when the latch15 is disengaged from the keeper 51, the gate will tend to swingto a closed position. In order that the gate may be disposed as above described, the hinge rod 23 slides in the blocks 21 and 22,
In a device of the class described, a gate comprising longitudinal bars; spaced uprights on opposite sides of the bars; blocks fitting closely between the uprights and the bars; rods mounted in the blocks and lo cated between the bars; a support; means'for connecting the outer ends of the rods pivotally with the support.
