The container is thus opened and automatically assumes its display position.
Considering the device in its open or display position, the length of the major portion of the hinged member, that is, thatportion between the hinged flap 14 and the hinge 19, and the positioning of the hinge, is such, that when the container is disposed diagonally in the open side of the cover, with one end resting upon the upperedge of one end of the cover and the other end resting upon the base of the cover, it will extend away from the hinged flap 14 to the corner of the container, while ,in the closed position of the device, it will permit of the portion 20 lying in the same plane therewith upon the base of the cover.
In Figs. 4 to 6, we have-shown a slightly modified form of construction. In this form,
the side portions of the cover 11 are formed of two folds 21 and 22, the inner fold 22 being bent downwardly and having an extension fiap 23 at one end which is held within the folds 2s and 25 of the end of the box.
The other end of the cover is also formed of two folds 26 and 27 and at the ends of the inner fold 26 there are provided extension flaps 28 which are inserted between the folds 21 and 22 of the sides. The upper edge of the flaps 28v are at substantially right angles :to the end of the cover, while the lower edges 29 are cut diagonally. The end of the fold 22 of the sides is cut similarly, as at 80, so that the end of the box may be hingedly. moved into inclined position as indicated in Fig. 6, the upper and lower edges of the flap 28 limiting the movement and positioning'the end respectively in straight or inclined pnsition. The angle of inclination is preferably such, that when the container 10 rests thereon, as in Fig. 6, it will be at substantially right angles there.- to, thereby afiording a more substantial support for the container and at the same time engaging the container at a point farther inwardly than is the case with a rigid end.
In Fig. 7, we have shown a slight modification in which the upper edge 31 of the flap 28 is cut diagonally, the end of the fold 22 being straight. This permits of the end swinging outwardly and facilitatesopening and closing of the device. It also insures a snug fitting of the cover and container, and in display position of the device the end when in its inner position shown in full lines forms a support for the container.
Referring again to Figs. i and 5, the lower edges of the folds 22 of the side portions of the'fcover are provided with an intermediate arcuate cutout portion 32. The edges 33 and 84 of the hingedmember 12 are cut. inwardly to such extent, that the fold 22 may be swung free of the hinged member, as in= I dicated in Fig. 5. This facilitates setting up of the devices. It will be understood that in making up. the devices, the cover is connected to the container by means of the hinged member, while the same are flat.
over the entire upper surface of the contents.
We have illustrated. and'described preferred and satisfactory embodimentsof our invention, but it is obvious that changes 7 maybe made therein within the spirit and scope thereof, as defined in the appended claims.
We claim:
