such as'will enable others skilled in the art to whichit appertains to make and use the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, andto characters of reference marked thereon, which'form a part of this specification i This invention relates, generally, improvements in shoes; and, the presentmvention has reference, more particularly, to a novel shoe which is provided with the usual front opening connected with the upper of the shoe, the closing portions of the upper being provided with the usual eyelets and fasteners for the shoe-lacing, but the quarters of the shoe being also provided with an opening and overlapping members for clos-- ing said opening, means being at the same time provided for securing said overlapping members in their secured and closed relation about the back and ankle of the foot, and that the shoe can be quickly removed from about the foot, without disturbing the front closed arrangement of the upper portions and of the lacing connected therewith The invention has for its principal object to provide a shoe having .the general appearance of a lace shoe into which the foot can be readily and quickly inserted, and can be easily and conveniently removed from the shoe without unfastening the lacing or disturbing the front closing portions or members of the upper.

The invention has for its further object to provide a shoe having an opening in the back comprising-a pair of overlapping closing members, and a novel means for quickly bringing the overlapped members in their securely closed relation, and adapting themselves about the foot with comfort to the wearer; and, at the same time providing a means which will not of itself, when walk ing, become separated or detached.

that the overlapping members will readily conform themselves to the general shape of the foot, and especially to the hollow at the side of the ankle, the closing means be ing also located upon one of the quarters of the shoe, at that point, whereby the parts adapt themselves to the shape of the foot, so as to provide neatness and at the same time'avoid all discomfort to the wearer.

A further object of the invention is to arrangethe closing means in suchla manner that it is variously'adjustable and that the shoe can be snugly fitted about the foot, irrespectlve of the size of the ankle of the wearer.

Other objects of the present invention not at th1s time more particularly enumerated will be clearly understood from the followlng detailed description of the present inventlon. With the various objects of the present lnventlon in view, the said invention consists, primarily, in the novel shoe hereinafter set forth; and, the present invention conslsts, furthermore, in the novel arrangemen-ts and combinations of the various devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the said parts, all of which will be'more fully described in the following s ecification, and then finally embodled in t e clauses of the claim which are appended to and which form an essential part of the said specification.

As shown in Fig. 5 of the drawing, in addition to the usual arrangement of the'eyelets at the upper end portions of the said upper members 2, auxiliary eyelets or perforations, as 6, may be figures of the .member or flap'20 and said reinforcing mememployed, or as shown in Fig. 17 of the drawings, a plurality of eyelets or perforations, as 7, may be disposed along the upper marginal edge-portions 8 of the said upper members 2. With these auxiliary eyelets or perforations the respective ends of the lacing may be used and arranged in the manner represented in either of said Figs. 5 or 17 to secure the upper members 2 in their closed relation, against separation, as will be clearly evident, without the necessity of tying the lacer-ends in theform of a bowknot. The sole of the shoe is designated by the reference-character 9, said sole having the heel 10, and having secured thereto the vamp 11 which is formed with the usual heel-piece 12. Suitably inserted and secured between the heel and the inner insert or lining 13 of the shoe, is the end-portion 15 of termlnating at its free end-portion in a loop or pull-piece 16, as illustrated more particularl in Fig. 4 of the drawings. As shown in the various figures of the drawings, the rear portion or quarters 17 and 18 of the upper is also open, one of the said upper members or quarters, as 17, being formed with a rear closing overlapping. member or flap, as 19, and the other upper member or quarter, as 18, bein likewise formed with a rear closing over apping member or flap, as 20. The said overlapping members or flaps 19 and 20 are preferably of the marginal configurations indicated in Figs. 1 to 4 of the drawings; and, said members or flaps when brought into their overlapped relation, so as to close the rear or back end of the shoe, will assume the relative positions indicated more particularly in Fig. 2 of the drawings. As shown, the said overlapping member of flap 20 has suitably secured upon its outer face, and in the proper position, a reinforcing element 21 of leather or the like, said element 21 being usually of circular marginal confi uration, and being made with an elongated ole or slot 22 in registration with a correspondingly disposed hole or slot 23 in the overlapping member or flap 20. Properly positioned upon the quarter 17 is a suitably constructed holding or retaining device, usually in the form of a stud adapted to be brought into engagement with perforated or slotted portions of the o erlapping ber 21.

The preferred form of holding or retaining device or stud is illustrated more particularly in Figs. 8, 9, 10, 13, 15 and 16 of the drawings, and the same consists, essentially, of a back-plate 24 of any desired marginal configuration, usually circular in form, said plate being depressed or dished, as at 25, and being also formed with a centrally disposed cone or funnel-shaped ortion, as

The said back-plate 24 is disposed upon the inner face of the said quarter 1.7, and upon the outer face'of said quarter 17 is a suitably formed face-plate 31 formed with" a central opening 32. Resting against said face-plate is the base 33 of a stud or post 34, said stud or post being provided upon its outer end with an enlargement or head, as 35, the said shank or post and its head or enlargement having an internally screwthreaded tubular portion, as 36, into which is screwed the screw-threaded shank of the said screw 26. Upon its under side or face, the said base 33 is made with a rearwardly projecting portion, as 37, which is snugly fitted in the central opening 32- of the faceplate 31, and is also formed with a coneshaped depression 38, so as to bring the various parts into a positively secured and binding relation, when assembled upon opp'osite sides of the said quarter 17, in the manner shown and as will be clearly evident from an inspection of said Fig. 10 of the drawings. This construction of holding or retaining device or stud, with the novel arrangement of the two overlapping members or fiaps 19 and 20, provides a ready and easily manipulated fastening and releasing means for the shoe, which may be quickly opened at the back for the insertion. or withdrawal of the foot, without disturbing the front closed andlaced relation of the parts of the upper.

In lieu of the form of reinforcing member or element 21, tab-shaped or elongated reinforcing members 39 and 40,respect1vely provided with the stud-receiving holes or openings 41 and 42 may be employed, the said members or elements 39 and 40 being disposed upon the outer faces of the overlapping members or flaps 20 in the manner illustrated in said Figs. 6 and. 7 of the drawings.

Furthermore, the. arrangements and dispositions of the perforated or slotted portions of the flaps 20, and of the fastening device or stud upon the quarter 17, are such, that when the parts are brought into their closed and retaining relation, the closing or retaining device or stud will be located at a point opposite the hollow near the ankle of the foot, so that in walking the parts will not become disconnected, nor cause any discomfort to the wearer of the shoe.

The construction, use and advantages of the invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description of the prestit ent invention and from aninspection of the drawings which accompany the same, and any further description of the invention is to all styles of shoes worn by 'men, as well as women, without detracting from the appearance of the shoe or rendering it uncomfortable to the wearer.

I am aware that some changes may be e various devices and parts, as

the foregoing specification, and as defined in the clauses of the claim which are appended to the said specification. Hence I do not limit my present invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the said devices and parts as described in the said specification, nor do I confine myself to the exact details of the construction of the said parts, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

I claim 1. A shoe having its quarters separated inwith a holding stud, and one of said flaps having an opening adaptedto be forced into retaining engagement with the said stud, said stud and the engaged portion of the flap with ,said stud, when the shoe is worn, lying in the hollow at one side directly below the ankle of the foot. V

2. A shoe having its quarters separated in the rear so as to provide an opening, closing flaps connected with and adapted to extend in overlapped relation from the marginal edge-portions of said quarters forming said opening, one of said quarters being provided with a holding stud, a reinforcing means connected. with one of said flaps, said reinforcing means and the flap having registering open portions adapted to be forced over the said stud into retaining engagement therewith, said stud and the engaged por tions of the flap and reinforcing means, with said stud, when the shoe is worn, lying in the hollow at one side directly below the ankle of the .foot. I

3. 6. A shoe having its quarters separated in the rear so as to provide an opening, closing flaps connected with and adapted-to extend in overlapping relation from the marginal edge-portions of said quarters forming said opening, one of said quarters being perforated, a retaining device comprising a backplate having a centrally disposed funnelshaped portion, a centrally opened faceplate, a post formed with a base having an annular flange disposed in the open portion of said face-plate, a head upon said post, the shank' of said 0st belng internally screw-threaded, combined with a screw hav-'- ing a cone-shaped head mounted in the funnel-shaped portion of said back-plate, and
