Be it known that I, GRANvnm: A. l-IUiiia-4 4 soN a. citizen of the United States, residing at hreve ort, in the county of Caddo and State of Iliouisiana, have invented new and useful Drill-Bits, of which a s ecilcation. l 'his invention relates to bits for use in the following is drilling rock, one of the objects of the invention being tofprovide a bit having cutting elements o novel forni which are mounted for movement relative to the bit and which have means whereby a lubricant can be supplied continuously to them s o as to enable them to rotate freely at all times during the operation .of the bit.
A further object is to provide means for supplying` water to the bit during the operation thereof.
With the foregoing and other obJects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter deg scribed and claimed, it .being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within rihe scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

diametrically opposed oints, with channels converging upward y. A substantially semi-cylindrical recess or socket 5 is formed in the extension 3 between the channels 4. Extending drical portion 3 and longitudinally of the recess or socket 5 is -a tubular bearing meinber 6 on which a, series of cutting disks 7 is arranged. Each of these cutting disks is provided, in one side, with a circular recess 8 while its other side has a boss or extension 9. rlhe boss on each disk projects into the recess in the next adjoining bit so that grit, etc., is thus prevented from working between the disks and onto the bearing member 6. rl`he peripheries of the disks 7 can be provided with il-shaped teeth extending throughout the widthfof the disk and intersected at their centers by an annular V- shaped groove 10. This construction has been shown in Figs. l, 2 and 3. lf preferred, however, the disks can be provided with peripheral rooves 11 extending transversely of the dis s, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, thus forming cutters between the grooves. Obviously cuttersA of other forms can be used shown and described. Extending across the grooves or recesses 4 and perpendicular to the walls thereof, are bearing pins 12. '.lhese pins may be secured in position in any preferred manner. ln the structure shown in Fig. 1, the pin 12 has a threaded nipple 13 at one end while its other end has a threaded head 14, the nipple being seated within a recess 15 formed at the inner end of a bore 16 while the head 14 is screwed into a counter bore 17 arranged at the outer end of bore 16. Each of the bearing pins 12 has an axial passage 18 one end of which is preferably closed by means of a screw plug`19. A cutting disk 20 is mounted for rotation on each pin 12 and as shown in the drawings, this disk is preisrably provided with V-shaped teeth 21 extending transversely of the periphery. Furthermore, as shown in Figs. .1 and 3, the disk 20 can be truste-conical so that the lower orv active teeth will thus be extended at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the head 1. This construction is not essential, however, as if desired, each of the cutting disks can he substantially cylindrical with the active edges of its teeth parailei diametrically Within the cylin i'aa with the axis of rotation of he disk. Formed longitudinally within the head 1 is a bore 26 constituting a portion of a lubricant container, there being a tubular receptacle 27 secured to the head and extending upwardly therefrom, this lreceptacle opening into the bore 26 and being llkeWlse designed to hold a. lubricant. Extending from the lower end of the bore 26 are ducts 28, one of these ducts being constantly in communication with an opening 29 in the upper portion of the bearing member 6 while the.l
other ducts 28 are constantly in communication with the inlets 30 of the passages 18 in bearin pins 12. An outlet opening 31 extends om each passage 1 8 and lubricant is adapted to flow through these passages to the bearing faces of the pins 12 and disks 20. Thus it will be seen that when the bore 26 and receptacle 27`are partly or entirely filled with a lubricant, said lubricant will giavitate along-the ducts 28 `to the interiors of the bearing members 6 and 12 from which the lubricant will be distributed to the bear--` ing faces of the disks 7 and 20 and to the outer surfaces of the members on which the disks are mounted. The disks are therefore kept constantly lubricated and, during the actuation of the bit, will be gradually ro tated. The disks 20 are extended slightly beyond the periphery of the cylindrical extension 3 and therefore serve to cut an opening slightly greater in diameter than the diameter of said extension 3, thus permitting.

For the purpose'of keeping the disksconstantly supplied with water, a series of Water conduits or ducts 32 are formed within the head land open into the tubular rod 33 to which the head 1 is connected. These ducts Y also extend downwardly and two 'of the ducts discharge intol the grooves or recesses 4.- while the remaining duct discharges into the recess or socket 5. Thus it will be seen that streams of water will be discharged constantly upon the disks during the operation of the blt.
Importance is attached to the fact that the head of the bit is formed in asingle piece and there is thus no danger of the 'head contracting or expanding to an undesirable extent while in use.
By referring particularly to Fig. 3 it will be seen that the central cutting disks 7 project into the path of the side cutting disks 20 so that the formation of a core or any:
other upstanding portion in the path of the head is positively revented.

4. A drill bit including a head, side cutters revoluble in planes converging into the head, and a series of closely lying revoluble cutters extending continuously across the center of one end of the head and into the path of the side cutters, all butthe active portions of all the cutters being housedin the head.
