MILK-BOTTLE AND CARRIER FOR SAME.
incense.
Application filed April 13. 1917. Serial No. 161,816.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT E. BELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Harbor Springs, in the county of Emmet and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvementsin Milk-Bottles and Carriers for the Same, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to milk bottles and carriers for the same, reference bein had particularly to that class of milk bott es or containers which are made of paper and which are intended to be used but once.
The invention has for its object to produce a conicalmilk bottle having a liquid proof closure, and a carrier whereby said bottle may be very conveniently manipulated, thus enabling the bottle to be made of much thinner and less expensive material than would otherwise be required in its construction.
A further object of the invention is to so construct the carrier that a plurality thereof containing milk bottles may be conveniently packed in a box or crate to facilitate the handling and distribution thereof.
With these and other ends in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described andparticularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawing has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claim may be resorted to when desired.
In the drawing;
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of the bottle and the carrier for the same showing also in section a portion of a crate supporting the carrier.
Fig.2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2-2 in Fig. 1. v
Fig. 3 is a view in side elevation in in verted position for delivering the bottle or container. 7
Corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawings are denoted by like characters of reference.
The bottle or container 15 is made in conical form of moderately heavy paper or thin paste board which is rendered impervious to liquid by coating the same with.
p araflin wax or other liquid proof material. For the large open end of the contamer 15 a closure 16 is provided, said closure consisting of a disk having a circumferential flange of substantially U-shaped cross section, said flange comprising an inner wall 17 and an outer wall 18, the mouth portion of the container being received between said wall portions. The closure member is also coated with paraffin wax to render it impervious to liquid. The inner wall portion 17 should fit snugly within the mouth of the container where it may be firmly secured by the application of heat sufficiently to melt the paraihn wax coatings on the opposed faces of the container and the closure member.
It is intended to construct the container 15 of thin and inexpensive material which,
while sufficiently strong for the purpose,
would not permit much handling of the container when filled. To facilitate the handling I therefore provide a carrier 21 of conical shape approximately corresponding to that of the container and of such dimensions that the container when nested therein as seen in Figs. 1 and 2 will project slightly above the mouth or open end of the carrier. This carrier, .which may beinexpensively made of tin or other sheet metal, is provided near the large open end thereof with an external flange or molding 22 which affords a means whereby it may be conveniently manipulated and which also serves to form an annular shoulder 23. A number of such carriers, in each of which a container 15- is placed, may be packed in a crate a portion of which is shown at 24, said crate having a horizontal partition 25 provided with apertures 26 wherein the carriers may be placed, the shoulder 23 of each carrier being supported on the top face of the partition.
In distributing the containers filled with milk, the salesman lifts the individual carriers from the crate and delivers the container from the carrier by inverting the same, leaving the container'standing on its large end as seen in Fig. 4. The contents may be taken from the container by cutting, clipping or otherwise removin the apex portion from the cone, from which the contents may then be poured as (lESlIGd.
While the present invention has been described as a milk bottle, it is obvious that it may be utilized as a container for liquids of other kinds.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
p A carrier for milk bottles or the like, comprising a body of conical form fully open at the larger end and having the free edge at such larger end formed into a return bend in contact with the outer surface of the spect to the body to present the edge of such flange in annular spaced relation to the body to form an engaging member to rest upon the surface of a support.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.-
ALBERT E. BELL.
