To all whom. t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM D. SKID- Monn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough' of the Bronx, city and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dumping-Cars, of which the following is a speciication.
My invention relates to railroad cars, and more particularly to that class of cars known as dumping cars, such asl are used, for 1nstance, in railway construction, for conveying ballast, filling material and the like to such places where it may be needed, and dumping the same upon or beside the right of way; and which may be used for other similar purposes. The invention is also applicable to vehicles of other kinds.
The object of my invention is toprovide such a car which shall be simple 1n conl struction and eii'cient in operation, and which is adapted to dump its load on either side or both sides of the right of way, either therefrom, as may be desired, or between the rails, either closerthereto or in the middle of the track, and which, on account of its low center of gravity, is capable of being constructed with a large carrying capacity.
The invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of various devices, elements and parts, as shown in the accompanying drawings and fully described in this specification.

In carrying my invention into eifect in the embodiment thereof which I have selected for illustration in the accompanying drawings and 'description in this specification, I provide for the lower portion of the car a running gearof the common or any suitable type, comprising the necessary sills, holsters or the like, mounted upon bogie-trucks provided with journal boxes forming the bearings for the ends of the axles, and supported by and secured tothe running gear in any vsuitable manner are end members 12 connected by means of a portion 13 adapted to 'form part of the floor of the carrying body of the car.
Extending the length of the car are doors 14, hinged to the members 13 at 15; door 16, hinged at 17; doors 18, hinged at 19; and doors 20, hinged at 21. The doors 14, 16 and 18, together with the portions 13, form the bottom of the carrying body, while the doors ,20 form the sides.
At one end and on each side of the car I provide levers 22 (see Figs. 7 and 9). These levers 22 are pivoted on the outside of the members 12, ,land each lever lis rigidly secured to a rod 23 running the length of the car. Rigidly mounted on the rods 23 are one or more supports 24, adapted when the lever 22 is in the position shown by the full lines in Fig. 7 to support members 25 rigidly secured to the doors 14, and thus hold the said door in its closed osition. One pedal 50 is provided on each side of each end of the car, and the pedals on opposite ends of the same sides of the car are operatively connected together so thatl when one such pedal is depressed, the corresponding pedal at the other end of the 'car will also be depressed. releasing the quadrants' 41, nd the doors 18 and 20. Under the weight of the load,
the weight of the quadrants 41, and the momentum acquired from the initial push of the load, these 'doors open to their full extent, and are held so by the engagement of the projections 48 with theinner notches 68 of the quadrants 41. The momentum of the falling load will throw it away from direct contact with the rails.

When it isgdesired to' ump outside the track, 4but close to the rails, as shown at the left of Fig. 5, the members 53 are placed in engagement with the quadrants 41, thus per- 4mitting the doors 18 and 20 to open Jtor a short-distance only. The load drops out gradually and without much momentum,
and falls close to the rails.
When it is desired to dump in the center of the track, as shown at the right of Fig. 5, the doors 20 are swung inward, and angles or girders 69 suitably secured to their lower edges, as b bolting the flanges of these girders and)-7 the doors 20 together. The lengthened door is thenl allowed to swing outward until'it rests against, the upper edge of the door 16. The load is. dumped through the doors 14, which are opened byy disengaging the pawl 32 from the ratchet 31, and operating the lever 22. After the load is dumped, the door may be closed by rotating the handle 29, and the lever 22 then moved back to its full line position, the supports 24 being sprung under the members 25.
When it is desired to dump between the rails, but close to them, as shown in Fig. 6,
the load is dumped through the doors 16,
which are opened by releasing the pawl 38 and disengaging thesupports by means of the levers 122 on the side of the car. The
operation of these doors is similar to the operation of the doors 14. The doors may be again closed by placing the handle 29 on the squared ends 36, the operation being similar to that of closing the doors 14, except that the handle is moved in the opposite direction.
The advantages of my invention `will be obvious from what has been above said concerning its construction and mode of operation, and consists notably of fthe various manners in which the car may be caused to dump its load and its low center of grav'- ity, which beingFlocated approximately at the point of ig. 3, will permit a large load to bel carried. I do not limit myself to the exact form described, as it is obvious that various modifications might be made, without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is as follows:
1. In a dumping car, the combination with running ear and a. carrying body; of a side door inged at its upper extremity, a side door hinged at its lower extremity, a vbottom door hinged at its upper extremity, a bottom door hinged at its lower extremity, band means adapted to operate the said doors.
2. 7.
