DECEASED, ASSIGNOB nUMrING-cm Specification of Letters Patent.
Patentedrea ii, 191e.
Application led June 28, 1916. Serial No..106,391.
To all whom. t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM D. SKID- Monn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough' of the Bronx, city and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dumping-Cars, of which the following is a speciication.
My invention relates to railroad cars, and more particularly to that class of cars known as dumping cars, such asl are used, for 1nstance, in railway construction, for conveying ballast, filling material and the like to such places where it may be needed, and dumping the same upon or beside the right of way; and which may be used for other similar purposes. The invention is also applicable to vehicles of other kinds.
The object of my invention is toprovide such a car which shall be simple 1n conl struction and eii'cient in operation, and which is adapted to dump its load on either side or both sides of the right of way, either therefrom, as may be desired, or between the rails, either closerthereto or in the middle of the track, and which, on account of its low center of gravity, is capable of being constructed with a large carrying capacity.
The invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of various devices, elements and parts, as shown in the accompanying drawings and fully described in this specification.
In the said drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the car; Fig. 2;` is an enlarged elevation of one end with the trucks removed; Fig. 3 is a diagrammatic view showing my car arranged to dump on both sides of the right of wa at a distance from the rails; Fig; 4 is a iagrammatic View showing an arran ement whereby the load is dumped at a distance outside the right hand rail only; Fig. 5 isi a diagrammatic view showing at the left an arrangement whereby the load is dumped outside the rail and close thereto, and at the right an arrangement by 22 is moved intot lost.
after described; Fig 9 is a view on an enlarged scale of the right hand end of Fig. l; and Fig. 10 is a view on yan enlarged scale of the left hand end of Fig. 1.
In carrying my invention into eifect in the embodiment thereof which I have selected for illustration in the accompanying drawings and 'description in this specification, I provide for the lower portion of the car a running gearof the common or any suitable type, comprising the necessary sills, holsters or the like, mounted upon bogie-trucks provided with journal boxes forming the bearings for the ends of the axles, and supported by and secured tothe running gear in any vsuitable manner are end members 12 connected by means of a portion 13 adapted to 'form part of the floor of the carrying body of the car.
Extending the length of the car are doors 14, hinged to the members 13 at 15; door 16, hinged at 17; doors 18, hinged at 19; and doors 20, hinged at 21. The doors 14, 16 and 18, together with the portions 13, form the bottom of the carrying body, while the doors ,20 form the sides.
At one end and on each side of the car I provide levers 22 (see Figs. 7 and 9). These levers 22 are pivoted on the outside of the members 12, ,land each lever lis rigidly secured to a rod 23 running the length of the car. Rigidly mounted on the rods 23 are one or more supports 24, adapted when the lever 22 is in the position shown by the full lines in Fig. 7 to support members 25 rigidly secured to the doors 14, and thus hold the said door in its closed osition. When the lever Ihe position shown bythe dotted lines 1n Fig. 7 the supports 24 are moved out' from under the members 25 in order that the door 14 may o en. The lever 22 may be secured in itsfull ine position by means of a pin 26 passing therethrough, which pin may be secured to the member 12 by. a chain 27, in. order that it may not be When the lever 22 is in its dotted line position, it rests against a block 28. After the door 14 has been opened, it may be replaced in its closed posltion b means of a lever 29, which may be detac abl secured to a squared end 30, which is a ro ongaton of the hinge 15. Pawls 32 an ratchets 31 may be provided on the outside of the member 12, at the ends of the said hinges 15.
' may be secured by pins 126 which may be The doors 16 aresupported in al similar manner by means of longitudinal rods 123, supports V124 leXtendin upwardly therefrom adapted to engage wit members 125 on the door, and levers 122 rigidly mounted on one end of each of 'these rods, these levers 122 attached to chains 127 in order that they may notbe lost. Each door 16 is provided which pawl is normally held in position by' with a ratchet 37 engaged by a pawl 38,
a spring 40, but may be disengaged from the ratchet 37 by operating the handle 39. The door 16 may be replaced in its closed position by applying the lever 29 to the squared end 36, as will be readily under-l stood.
' near the to Secured to one end of each'hinge 21 is a toothed quadrant 41. (See Figs. 1, 2 and 10). Each quadrant is secured by means of a'removable-pin 45 to one of the doors 20, in order that it. may either be ri id therewith, or swing on 21 as a pivot in e pendently of the said door. A rod 42 is pivoted at 43 to each quadrant, and has its other end pivoted at 44 to one of the doors 18.
l provide levers 46, pivoted at 47, and provided with projections 48 adapted to engzage with notches 68 on the quadrants 41.
ach of these projections normally engages y a notchin a quadrant, and holds the quadrant in whichever positionit may occupy,
being acted upon by the spring 49, but the projection may be disengaged by depressing a pedal 50, pivoted at 51. and adapted to` elevate alvertical rod 52.l The upper end of this rod 52 bears against the end of the lever 46 opposite to that which bears theprojection 48, raises this end, and so depresses the projection 48.
One pedal 50 is provided on each side of each end of the car, and the pedals on opposite ends of the same sides of the car are operatively connected together so thatl when one such pedal is depressed, the corresponding pedal at the other end of the 'car will also be depressed. To accomplishthis i provide for each pedal a link 100 having one of its ends pivoted to the inner end of the said pedal. The other ends of the links 100 areA pivoted to rocking bars 101,
which bars extend inward to the transyerse i v center line of the car, being pivoted midway their length, at 108. To the inner end of each bar 101 is pivoted one end of a link 102. Thus the quadrants 41 may be released from either end of the car also provide securin means 58, pivoted of the ens of the car, Aat 54, and normal y held in the position shown by the full lines in Fig. 2'by means oit chains 55.. Each member 53 is provided with a pin` 56,'
which, when the member occupies its yer tical position, as shown by the dotted lines at the right of Fig. 2, engages wlth one of suitab e manner, as by the quadrants 41, and will the'saidl vquadrant to swing downward for a short distanceonly, when the projection 48is re-'Y i I provide a cylinder 5.7 having suitable stop-cocks 5,8, for compressed air or the like, and having a piston59 provided vwith a rod 60. This rod 60 bears two vertical racks 61,
adapted to engage with toothed wheels 62,
mounted on shafts 63, which vshaftsals'o bear gear wheels 64 adapted to engage with the quadrants 41. rFhe shafts 63 are adapted to slide longitudinally, as shownin Fig. 1, and when in its full line position to place the gears 62 'and 64 in engagement with the racks 61 and quadrants-41 respectively, but
when in its dotted line position to disengagev said gears. Projecting from the members 12 are studs 65, over which may be slipped a gear wheel 66 (see Fig. 8) adapted to rotate thereon, said gear wheel being provided with a handle 67 lwhereby it and a quadrant are disengaged, and the pedal 50 depressed,
releasing the quadrants' 41, nd the doors 18 and 20. Under the weight of the load,
the weight of the quadrants 41, and the momentum acquired from the initial push of the load, these 'doors open to their full extent, and are held so by the engagement of the projections 48 with theinner notches 68 of the quadrants 41. The momentum of the falling load will throw it away from direct contact with the rails.
When it is desired to close the doors, the
vpedal 50 is againdepressed, and the doors ,caused to move back into position byy hand or b the com ressed air. n
Wben it is esired to dump lfrom one side only, as shown in Fig. 4, the `pin 45 is withdrawn from each quadrant` of the door 20 which is not to be used, thisdopr 20 being then swung inward into the position shown in Fi 4, where it may be secured in any plassing pins through its lower iiange intojt e portion 13. The
` load may `then be placed on the car, and
wiii occu y the arca shown in cross-section by the s ading of Fig. 4. To dump, the mechanism on one side onl is employed..
When it isgdesired to' ump outside the track, 4but close to the rails, as shown at the left of Fig. 5, the members 53 are placed in engagement with the quadrants 41, thus per- 4mitting the doors 18 and 20 to open Jtor a short-distance only. The load drops out gradually and without much momentum,
and falls close to the rails.
When it is desired to dump in the center of the track, as shown at the right of Fig. 5, the doors 20 are swung inward, and angles or girders 69 suitably secured to their lower edges, as b bolting the flanges of these girders and)-7 the doors 20 together. The lengthened door is thenl allowed to swing outward until'it rests against, the upper edge of the door 16. The load is. dumped through the doors 14, which are opened byy disengaging the pawl 32 from the ratchet 31, and operating the lever 22. After the load is dumped, the door may be closed by rotating the handle 29, and the lever 22 then moved back to its full line position, the supports 24 being sprung under the members 25.
When it is desired to dump between the rails, but close to them, as shown in Fig. 6,
the load is dumped through the doors 16,
which are opened by releasing the pawl 38 and disengaging thesupports by means of the levers 122 on the side of the car. The
operation of these doors is similar to the operation of the doors 14. The doors may be again closed by placing the handle 29 on the squared ends 36, the operation being similar to that of closing the doors 14, except that the handle is moved in the opposite direction.
The advantages of my invention `will be obvious from what has been above said concerning its construction and mode of operation, and consists notably of fthe various manners in which the car may be caused to dump its load and its low center of grav'- ity, which beingFlocated approximately at the point of ig. 3, will permit a large load to bel carried. I do not limit myself to the exact form described, as it is obvious that various modifications might be made, without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is as follows:
