Description

IMITATION OF OIL PAINTINGS AND LIKE PICTURES.
No Drawing.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT SAUBER, a sub-, ject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, and residing at The British Fine Art Society, Waterloo street and South street, Hammer-smith, London, W., England, artist, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in and Relating to the Imitatlon of Oil Paintings and like Pictures, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improved means for imitating oil paintings and like pictures by embossing a colored or other printed picture by a negative graining or texture plate or the like.
There are various well known methods of producing a great number of copies of imitation paintings of one and the same original picture, by means of a negative specially produced for that particular icture.
It has already been proposed to use one and the same negative graining or texture plate or the like formed with canvas, regular spot markings, or sand grain to give a uniform texture of grain or grains to a variety of prints.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved negative graining or texture plate capable of being used in connection with a great variety of pictures so as to convert them into plates for making imitation oil paintings.
According to the present invention use is made of a negative graining or texture late or the like produced in any known manner from a positive which, in addition to its being formed with canvas or regular spot markings, is also provided with brush marks, preferably obtained by painting, these marks being of a coarse character with the exception of one or more definite positions, where the brush marks are finer, in order to produce a more natural or more prominent effect. For instance in the case of a negative intended for use in connection with enlarged photographs of persons, a circular or oval portion of the surface of the positive, from which the negative is roduced, namely, that portion which approximately corresponds to the head, is provided with fine brush marks, while the remainder thereof is covered with coarse brush marks.
In an alternative mode of carrying the invention into effect, the definite positions referred to may be left without any brush marks altogether.

- or the like may be produced in sets of different sizes with the portions covered by fine brush marks also of different sizes and shapes.
The partial obscuration of those portions of the picture which are to form the background, while taking care not to obscure the details of the other important or central figures in the picture, obviously tends to emphasize the latter and to make the same of greater prominence in the entire picture.
What I claim is 1. A negative graining or texture plate for the production of imitation oil paintings produced from a positive plate formed with canvas or regular spot markings and with brush marks which are of a coarse character on the portion of the plate corresponding to the part of the picture which is to be made less prominent, and having only fine brush marks on the portion of the plate corresponding to the part of the picture which is to 'be made more prominent, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A negative graining or texture plate for the production of imitation oil paintings produced from a positive plate formed with canvas or regular spot markings and with brush marks which are of a coarse character on only those portions of the plate corresponding to those parts of the picture which is to be made of less prominence, most of the said brush marks being put on in an inclined direction from right to left, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In the manufacture of plates for the production of imitation oil paintings having some portion more prominent and distinct than other portions thereof, the improvement which comprises applying coarse brush marks to those portions of the plate which are to correspond to the less prominent parts of the finished picture, and applying only fine brush marks, incapable of injuring the details, to those portionsofthe plate which. are to correspond to the more prominent; parts of the finished: ictumeai 4. In the manufacture of plates for the production of imitation oil paintingshaming some portion more prominent and distinct than other pontions thereof the-inrprovement which compnisesapplying cosirse, brush marks to those portions of the plate which are to correspond to the less" prominent' parts of the finished picture, and applying no brush manks. to: those portions of the plate which are to correspond to the more prominent partsof the finished picture.
In testimony whereof I have. signed my name. to; this specification.
