My invention relates generally to electric locomotives, and more particularly to a bedor frame therefor, Said bed or frame being carried by the locomotive wheels and serving as a support for the'body of the 10- comotive.
In connection with my invention it' will be understood that to a large extent'it is the present practice to construct locomotive beds or frames in separately formed pieces and to rigidly connect said pieces by means of bolts, rivets and the like. This method of manufacture'has certain disadvantages, for instance, the cost of productionof the separate parts,-:the time and labor involved in fabrication, and further, for the reason that the strains and consequent vibration developed while the bed or frame is in service tends to loosen the 'oints between the assembled parts, there y materially decreasapproximately on the line 1111 of Fig.1.

The principal object of my invention is to overcome the objectionable features just noted by casting. the entire bed or frame in a single piece and forming integral therewith a number of essential parts, which construction producesa very strong, rigid and substantial bed which in service will resist to a relatively high degree all strains to which it is ordinarily subjected and which. bed will not be affected by the constant vibration and service shocks which it may receive while in use.
By my improved construction I am able to produce with practically the same amount of metal now used in a fabricated structure, a bed or frame which has much greater strength than said fabricated structure, and likewise it is possible to produce a frame having the requisite strength with comparatlvely less metal and consequently less 'weight than is required in an assembled structure.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, my invention consists in certain novelfeatures of construction and arrangement of parts, hereinafter more fullydescribed and claimed, and illustrated in theaccom: panying drawings, in which 7 v Figure l is a topplan view of a locomotive bed of my improved construction.

Referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings which illustrate a practical embodiment of my invention, 10- 10 designate the side members of the bed or frame,
which members arearranged in parallel reprovided with, elongated openings 13 for the accommodation of the semi-elliptic springs (not shown) which are mounted on the j ournal boxes disposed between the pedestals. By virtue of this construction, portions of the side members 10 above and immediately adjacent to the pairsof pedestals are substantially U-shaped in cross section. The bottom plates of the side members below the openings 10 and to the sides of the pedestals 11 are provided with relatively short slots ll which are adapted to receive the lower legs of spring saddles (not shown) which are associated with the springs disposed upon the journal boxes.
The forward ends of the side members 10 are connected by a transversely disposed in tegrally formed end sill 15 which is preferably channel-shape in 'crom section with the horizontal flanges inwardly presented. Connecting the side members 10 a short distance to the rear of end sill 15 is an inte grally formed transverse member 16, preferably of =boxshape in cross section and disposed between this transverse member and end sill 15 are integrally formed longitudinally disposed members 17, preferably of E- beam shape'in cross section and slightly inclined so that they gradually diverge from said end sill toward transverse member 16.
Formed on top of transverse member 18 at points equidistant from the transverse center thereof are side bearing pads 18 and formed through the top plate of transverse member immediately outside thesepads are openings 19 which are for the accommodation of the brake cylinder levers (not shown).
Formed in the center of transverse member 16 is a front draw-bar pocket 20, the same being open at its front end and formed in the plates aboveand below this pocket are apertures 21, preferably hushed and which are adapted to receive the pin or bolt which pivotally connects the front draw-bar to the bed or frame.
.Depending from the underside of transverse member 16 are integrally formed brackets 22, the same serving as bearings for v the brake cylinder lever fulcrum (not shown). Formed integral with the side members 10 adjacent to the ends of transverse member 16 are integrally formed depending brackets 23, the lower portions of which are provided with suitable bearings 24 which are adapted to receive the equalizer fulcrums not shown).
Formed integral with the side members 10 between end sill 15 and transverse member 16 are depending brackets 25, the same being arranged in pairs and serving as lead truck equalizer guides. Formed integral with the rear side of transverse member 16 is a rearwardly projecting bracket 26 which serves as a motor support. 1 I

the same being of any desired cross sectional shape and formed on top of side members 10 at the ends of this transom are side bearing at points adjacent to the ends of transom 27- are bearings 31 which are adapted to receive the fulcrums of equalizers (not shown).
Transversely disposed between side members 10 a short distance to the rear of transom 27 and at-a point between the pedestals for the journal boxes of the second and third axles is an integrally formed motor supporting transom 32, the same being providedon both front and rear sides with outwardly projecting motor supporting brackets 33.-
Depending from the sidemembers 10 at points near the ends of this transom 32 are brackets 34 which are adapted to serve as bearings for brake lever fulcrums (not The rear ends of side members 10 are connected by an integrally formed rear end sill 35, preferably of channel-shape in cross section with its horizontally disposed flanges inwardly'presented. and arranged a short distance in front of this end sill is an integrally formed transversely disposed transom member 36. This last mentioned member is". preferably channel-shape in cross section with its horizontally disposed flanges rearwardly presented and connecting the central portions of end sill 35 and transom '36 is a longitudinally disposed member 37, preferably of I beam shape in cross section.
Formed integral with the underside of member 37 adjacent the point where the same joins the transom 36 is a housing 37 the chamber within which serves as a rear draw-bar pocket 37 and the plates of the housing above and below this pocket are provided with openings 37, preferably hushed which are adapted to receive the pin or bolt which pivotally connects the rear draw-bar to the bed or frame.
