To all whom it may concera:
Be it known that I, EDWARD S. MEIGHAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Memphis, in the county of Shelby and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper-Ruling Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to sheet carrying and delivering means to be employed for instance in connection with paper ruling machines, and more particularly to the paper guiding and carrying aprons and strings, and the primary object of the invention is to provide means which will prevent the curling of the paper while being conveyed to the lay boy, or delivery end of the machine, and consequently prevent the folding or crushing of the paper as it passes about the guiding rollers of the conveyers of the machine.
More specifically, the primary object of the invention is to extend the delivery apron or cloth over the upper run of the conveying strings of the second conveyer, which receives the paper from the initial conveyer of an ordinary ruling machine, and to provide guiding rollers for the lower run of the uppermost conveyer, whereby the paper will be delivered from the uppermost or initial conveyer between the upper run of the second conveyer and the lower run of the extendedportion of the delivery conveyer, to prevent curling of the paper and the consequent crushing or folding thereof when it passes about the guiding roller at the delivery end of the second conveyer.
A further object of this invention is to provide a relatively small auxiliary guiding roller which engages beneath the paper delivering conveyer at the delivery end thereof, which roller is positioned above the upper surface of the lay boy and provides a short vertical run of the delivery conveyer, to cause the paper to pass off the conveyer upon the lay boyand prevent any of the sheets from passing downwardly between ldrawing, which shows a sectional view through the improved ruling machine, and
in describing the drawing, like reference characters will be used to designate like and corresponding parts.
Referring more particularly to the draw- :ing, 1 indicates the supporting structure of the paper ruling machine. This supporting structure is the ordinary construction employed in paper ruling machines, and it carries various paper conveyers, which will be -herelnafter more fully described, that deliver the ruled paper to the lay boy 2.
The initial conveyer, which is indicated by the numeral 3, first receives the paper and conveys it, along the top of the machine, toward the guiding roller 4, which is positioned in one end of the initial conveyer and between the flights of the initial conveyor 3 which pass about the roller 4, and the portion 5 of the second conveyer 6. The second conveyer 6 is also guided about a portion of the roller 4 and about suitable guide rollers 7 and 8, traveling in a downward path from the guide roller 7 about the guide roller 4, and in a substantially horizontal path to and about the guide roller 9, which is positioned at the end of the supporting frame oppositely from the guide roller 4. Suitable idler rollers 10 are provided for properly guiding the runs of the second conveyer 6. The paper passes from the initial conveyer 3 about the roller 4 and upon the upper downwardly traveling run mutilated, so that it will not be fit for use. To overcome this crushing and folding of the paper, the delivery conveyer, indicated by the numeral 12, has an extension 1 formed thereupon comprising an upper run 15 and a lower run 16. The extension 14 of the delivery conveyer 12 passes above the second conveyer 6 and below the initial conveyer 3, and it has its loWer run 16 positioned for travel directly over the upper paper-carrying run 11 of the second conveyer 6, so that the paper traveling with the upper run 11 of the conveyer 6 will be engaged by the lower run 16 of the extension 14 and consequently be prevented from curling, thereby eliminating the liability of the crushing 0r folding of the paper as it passes about the roller 9.
The extension 14 does not extend to the roller 41 and to provide means to prevent the curling of'the paper prior to the time that it is engaged by the lower run 16, suitable auxiliary guide rollers 18 and 19 are provided, which engage the lower run 20 of the initial conveyer 3, and cause the portion 21 of the lower run to travel directly above and in close proximity to the upper run 11 of the second conveyer, so that the portion21 will engage the paper and prevent it curling prior to the engagement of the paper by the lower run 16.
The guide rollers 18 and 19 further pro vide an abrupt upwardly extending portion of the lower or idle run of the initial conveyer and thus prevent the paper from adhering to the initial conveyer and being carried over to the various guide rollers of the lower run 20 or from engaging with the delivery conveyer at the improper place.
The lower run 16 of conveyer 12 passes about the idler roller 9 and from this guide roller to and over the usual guide roller 22,
which is positioned at the delivery end of the delivery conveyer 12. In the ordinary type of machine, where only the one guide roller 22 is provided, the paper often sticks to the conveyer 12 and passes downwardly between the delivery end of the conveyer and the receiving end of the lay boy 2, either crushing the paper or causing it to fall downwardly upon the floor, and thus be rendered useless. To overcome this destructionof the paper, an auxiliary guide roller 23, which is relatively small in diameter, is positioned directly above the guide roller 23, and above the upper receiving end of the lay boy 2, causing the upper run 24: of the delivery portion of the delivery conveyer to terminate above the lay boy and also providing a short downwardly traveling or vertical run 25 of the delivery conveyer, thus causing the paper to pass off the abrupt end of the delivery conveyer upon the lay boy and consequently eliminate the comprehended within the scope of what is claimed.
"What is claimed is:
1. The combination in a sheet carrying and delivering machine, including an initial conveyer and a second conveyer extended somewhat beyond the end of the'initial conveyer and substantially in contact with said end, of a delivery conveyer for receiving the sheets from the second conveyer, said delivery conveyer being extended and lying over a portion ,of the sheet carryin run of the second conveyer for engaging the surface of the sheets while on the second conveyer to prevent tearing of said sheets.
2. The combination with a sheet carrying and delivering machine including an initial sheet conveyer, and a second sheet conveyer for receiving the sheet from the initial conveyer, of a delivery conveyer for receiving the sheet from the second conveyer, said delivery conveyer being extended and lying over a portion of the sheet-carrying run of the second conveyer forengaging the sheet while on the second conveyer to prevent curling of the sheet, and auxiliary guiding rollers engaging said initial conveyer for guiding a part of the idle run thereofover the sheet-carrying surface of the second conveyer for engaging the sheet until it is engaged by the delivery conveyer extension.
3. The combination with a sheet carrying and delivering machine including an initial sheet conveyer, and a second sheet conveyer for receiving the sheet from the initial conveyer, of a delivery conveyer for receiving the sheet from the second conveyer, said delivery conveyer being extended and lying over a portion of the sheet-carrying run of the second conveyer for engaging the sheet while on the second conveyer to prevent curling of the paper, auxiliary guiding rollers engaging said initial conveyer for guiding a part of the idle run thereof overthe sheet-carrying surface of the second conveyer for engaging the sheet until it is engaged by the delivery conveyer extension, said auxiliary guiding rollers arranged to provide a short upwardly traveling portion of the idle run of the initial conveyer to prevent the sheet adhering to the idle run of the initial conveyer.
4. The combination in a sheet carrying and delivering machine including a delivery conveyer and means for receiving the sheets from said delivery conveyer and a guiding roller at the inner wall of the delivery end of the said delivery conveyer, of auxiliary guiding means at said inside wall of the delivery end and directly above said roller and adapted to slightly raise said delivery end above the plane of said sheet receiving means.
5. The combination with a sheet carrying and delivering machine including an initial sheet conveyer, a second sheet conveyer, and a lay boy, of a delivery conveyer for receiving the sheet from the second conveyer, said delivery conveyer being extended and lying over a portion of the sheet-carrying run of the second conveyer for engaging the sheet while on the second conveyer to prevent curling of the sheet, a guiding roller at the delivery end of the delivery conveyer, and an auxiliary guiding roller positioned directly above the first-named guiding roller and engaging the sheet-carrying run of the delivery conveyer to provide a downwardly extending relatively short vertical run at the delivery end of the delivery conveyer.
6. The combination with a sheet carrying and delivering machine including an initial sheet conveyer, a second sheet conveyer and a lay boy, of a delivery conveyer for receiving the sheet from the second conveyer, said delivery conveyer being extended and lying over a portion of the sheet-carrying run of the second conveyer for engaging the sheet while on the second conveyer to prevent curling of the sheet, a guiding roller at the delivery end of the delivery conveyer, an auxiliary guiding roller positioned directly above the first-named guiding roller and engaging the sheet-carrying run of the delivery conveyer to provide a downwardly extending relatively short vertical run at the delivery end of the delivery conveyer, and auxiliary guiding rollers engaging said initial conveyer for guiding a part of the idle run thereof over the sheet-carrying surface of the second conveyer for engaging the sheet until it is engaged by said delivery conveyer extension.
7. In a sheet carrying and delivering device including an initial conveyer and a second conveyer, supporting rollers at the ends of said conveyers and at the inside thereof, auxiliary guide rollers near one end of the initial conveyer and in spaced relation above each other on both sides of the idle run of the same, the distance of the lower guide roller from the carrying run of the initial conveyer being substantially equal to the diameter of the adjacent supporting roller for providing a short upwardly traveling portion of said conveyer to permit of the delivery of a sheet by said conveyer and prevent adhesion to the idle run of said conveyer.
8. The combination with a sheet carrying and delivering machine including an initial sheet conveyer, a second sheet conveyer and a lay boy, of a. delivery conveyer for receiv ing sheet from the second conveyer, said delivery conveyer being extended and lying over a portion of the sheet-carrying run of the second conveyer for engaging the sheet while on the second conveyer to prevent curling of the sheet, a guiding roller at the delivery end of the delivery conveyer, an auxiliary guiding roller positioned directly above the first-named guiding roller and engaging the sheet-carrying run of the deliveryconveyer to provide a downwardly extending relatively short vertical run at the delivery end of the delivery conveyer, and auxiliary guiding rollers engaging said initial conveyer for guiding a part of the idle run thereof over the sheet-carrying surface of the second conveyer for engaging the sheet until it is engaged by said delivery conveyer extension, said auxiliary guiding rollers, arranged to provide a short upwardly traveling portion of the idle run of the initial conveyer to prevent sheet adhering to the idle run of the initial conveyer.
9. In a sheet carrying and delivery device the combination with a receiving conveyer apron of a delivering conveyer apron having one end substantially surrounding and in contact with the ends of both runs of the receiving conveyer apron and an additional conveyer apron between the receiving and delivering conveyer aprons and having one of its runs parallel and substantially in contact with the freely supported part of the adjacent run of the delivery conveyer apron.
10. In a sheet carrying and delivering device the combination with a receiving conveyer apron of a delivering conveyer apron having one end extending somewhat beyond the receiving conveyer apron and substantially in contact therewith, guiding and supporting means at the end of the sheet carrying run of the conveyer apron and guiding and supporting means near the end of the idle run of the receiving conveyer apron and spaced from each other at an angle to the carrying conveyer surface of said receiving conveyer apron, an additional conveyer apron supported adjacent said angularly disposed guiding means and between the receiving and delivering conveyer aprons and having one run parallel and substantially in contact with the carrying surface of the delivery conveyer apron.
11. In a sheet carrying and delivering device, in combination an endless receiving conveyer apron, having a carrying surface, an inwardly bent portion on said conveyer apron opposite the carrying surface, an endless dclivery conveyer apron having one end surrounding and substantially in contact with one end of the receiving conveyer apron, and an additional conveyer apron extending into the bend of the receiving conveyer apron between the latter and the delivery conveyer apron and having one of its runs substantially in contact With the carrying surface of the delivery conveyer apron.
12. The combination With a sheet carrying and delivering device including a delivery conveyer apron and means for receiving the sheets from said delivery conveyer apron and a guiding roller at the'inside of the delivery end of the delivering conveyer apron,
of an auxiliary guiding roller of smaller size than the first mentioned guiding roller and directly above said roller and adapted to 15 slightly raise said delivery end above the plane ofthe sheet receiving means.
