Be it known that I, CHARLES HUn'roREN, a citizen of the United States, resldlng vat Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sofa-Beds, &c., of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates particularly to` sofa-beds of the type employing4 an innerl folded bed; and the primary object is to provide a structure of improved 'construction and operation, in which the length of the bed extends at right-angles to the back of the sofa-frame when the structure is in tion'al view of the structure in open condition; Fig. 2, an enlarged broken elevational view, being a fragmentary view of the seatframe and back frame and thefolding bed surmounting the seat frame in its overturned position; Fig. 3, a view4 similar to Fig. l, but showing the structure in the half open position; Fig. 4, a View similar to Fig. 3, but showing the structure in closed condition; Fig. 5, a broken plan section taken as indicated at line 5 of Fig. 1; Fig. 6, a View showing the seat-frame and sofaback frame in the relation which they occupy when the structure is in sofa form, and Fig. 7, an enlarged broken section taken as v indicated at line 7 of Fig. 6.

In the preferred embodiment, the invention comprises a main frame A; a forwardlyfoverturnable seat B; a back .C adapted to fold upon the seat and to be carried thereby to a position in front of the main frame when the 'structure is converted to bed form; and a folding-bed D which is housed partially the rear of the sofa-back when the structure is in sofa form.

The frame A, in the illustration given, comprises ornamental standards 1, whose lowerportions are connected by an inner rectangular frame 2. In the illustration given, the frame is provided with a closed back 3 and an ornamental top rail 4.

The inner open box, or frame, 2, is shown connected with the lower portions of the beneath the seat and partially in standards 1 by bolts 5. The front corners of the inner frame 2 are equipped with mountmgs, or standards, 6 having arms 6a from which ,are suspended links 7 which are connected with the base-portions of standards, or hangers, 8, applied to the lower front corners of the seat-frame.

'The seat B comprises a frame 9 and a cushion 10.

Referring to the structure in sofa form (Fig. 6), the rearportion of the seat-frame 9 has rigidly secured thereto plates, or standards, 1l, whose upper ends are connected, by `pivots or studs 12, with the lower portion of the frame of the cushion-back C. The upper portion of each plate or standard 1,1 is provided with a dog, or locking-device, 13, which is mounted on a pivot 14 and which is provided with locking notches 15 and 16, one or the 'other of which is adapted to engage a locking stud 17, with which the ad]acent portion of the frame of the back G -is provided, the locking notch 16 corresponding) with the, upright position ofthe cushion ack, as shown in Fig. 6, and the locking-notch 15 corresponding with that position of the back C when it is parallel with the seat B, as illustrated in Fig. 2.

As shown in Figs. 6 and 7, each dog, or doulble-lock pawl, 13, has connected therewith an actuating link 18 havingfguide-connections 19 with the seat frame, or with the corresponding plate 11 of the seat-frame.

'At the lower end of the link 18 is a laterally-turned member, or lug, 18a, which, when the seat is in they normal position shown in Fig. 6, .engages the upper edge of the endmember of the box 2, thereby lifting the link 18 and causlng it to move the pawl so that the notch 16 will engage the stud 17.

The plate 11 is provided with a segmental slot 11-l through which the stud 17 projects, and in which it moves when the back C is moved with relation to the seat. The frame of the seat B is provided at its lower edges with bores, or sockets, in which are confined *coiled springs 20, which serve to depress or hold down the links 18, and thereby release the studs 17 from engagement with the notches 16 when the-seat is lifted slightly in the initial portion of the operation of turning the back C forwardly upon the seat preparatory to swinging the seat forwardly to an inverted position in front of the main frame.

From the foregoing, it will be understood that the back C is locked in angular relation to the seat when the structure is in sofaform, andis locked in parallel relation to the seat when the structure is being converted to bed form.

The folding-bed D comprises a rear bedsection 21; a spacing section 22 pivotally connected with the section 21 and also pivotally mounted on the hangers, or standards, 8, carried by the seat frame; a main intermediate section 23 pivotally connected withl the spacing section 22, and a front, or footsection, 24, pivotally connected with the main intermediate section 23.

The rear b ed-section 21 is mounted on elbow-levers 25, which areconnected at one end, by pivots 26, to the frame-attached member Gand connected at the other end, by pivots 27, to the'ar'ms of the bed-section 21. i The intermediate section 22 comprises short bars which are connected by a truss 28, said short bars being connected with kthe hangers 8 by pivots 29. The levers 25 are connected With the hangers 8 by links 30. The portion of the main intermediate bedsection 23 which is adjacent to the footsection 24, that is the outer portion of the bed-section 23 when the structure is in bed form, is connected by links 31 to clips 32, with which the seat-frame is equipped at its free longitudinal edge.

rI`he bed-section 24 comprises a U-shaped Iframe-member, the extremities of whose arms are equipped with rigidly secured plates 33, which are connected, by pivots 34, to adjacent ends of the members comprising the main intermediate section 23. A truss 35 connects the corresponding joints of the folding-bed in line with the pivots 34, this being the usual -U-shaped truss. The plates 33 have up-curved free extremities, or arms, 33a, which are connected, by links 36, to the seat-frame B.

r1`he outer, or foot-section, 24, of the bed is provided with folding legs 37, which are connected, by links. 38, to the links 36. The construction is such that in the operation of swinging the seat to an inverted position, the links 36 will serve, through the medium of the arms 33, to extend the foot-section, and, through the medium of the links, 38, to unfold the legs. l

The rear corner portions of the rear bedsection 21 are connected, by springs, 39, to standards 40 secured to the rear corners of the inner frame 2. These springs serve as counter-balancing springs and aid in ythe operations of folding and unfolding the v structure.

In the operation of swinging the seat to the inverted position, the bed-frame is unfolded and the legs 37 are also unfolded. When the structure is in bed-form, the frame of the back C rests upon the floor, while the seat rests upon lthe back and supports the intermediate portion of the bed.

In the reverse operation, the foot-section 24 is turned to a position at right-angles to the main intermediate bed-section 23, and the head-section 2l is lowered into the inner frame 2, the spacing section 22 finally assuming substantially a vertical position, while the section 23 assumes a position substantially parallel with the section 21. [he construction is such as to provide a space '4] between the sections 21 and 23 for the folded mattress and bed clothing, and a space 42 in the rear of the back for that portion of the mattress and bedding which is secured to the foot-section 24 of the folding-bed.

It will be noted that the structure obviates the necessityof storing three folds of a mattress and bedding beneath the seat,'so that the sofa-seat can be mounted low in the main frame.

The foregoing detailed description has' been given for clearness of understanding only, and no unnecessary limitation should be understood therefrom, but the appended claims -should be construed as broadly as permissible, in view of the prior art.

What l regard as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, Ais- 1. In a structure of the character set forth, the combination of a frame, an invertible seat mounted therein and 'adapted to swing to an inverted position in front of said frame, a back mounted on said seat and adapted to be folded thereon, means for locking the back with relation to the seat in both the folded and angular position, said back in folded position adapted to rest on the Hoor and serve as a support for the seat, a folding-bed comprising a plurality'of foldably related bed-sections mounted on the seat, supportinglinks for the rear bedsection mounted on the frame, and links connecting said first-named links to the seat.

2. ln a structure ofthe character set forth,

'` the combination of a frame, a forwardly overturnable seat, a back mounted on the rear portion of the seat and adapted to fold weaves for the rear section connected with said links for the rear section, and links connectframe.

3. In a structure of the character set forth, the combination of a frame, a forwardlyoverturnable seat adapted to swing to an inverted position in front of said frame, a back mounted on and adapted to fold against said seat, means for locking the back With relation to the seat, said back in folded position adapted to rest on the floor and serve as a support for the seat, hangers secured to the seat, and a folding-bed comprising a plurality of foldably-related bed-sections, including a spacing section pivotally mounted on said hangers, a section pivotally connected With said spacing section and linked to said seat, and a rear section pivotally connected with said spacing section and linked to said frame.

4. In a structure of the character set forth,

the combination of a frame, a forwardlyoverturnable seat adapted to swing to an inverted position in front of said frame, a back mounted on and adapted to fold against said seat, means for locking the back With rela,- tion to the seat in both the folded and angular relation, said back in folded position adapted to rest on the Hoor and serve as a support for the seat, hangers secured to the seat, and a folding-bed comprising a plurality of foldably-related bed-sections, including a spacing section pivotally mounted on said hangers, a section pivotally connected With said spacing section and linked to said seat, a rear section pivotally connected with said spacing-section, supportinging the supporting links of the rear section to said hangers.

5. In a structure of the character set forth, the combination of a frame, a forwardlyoverturnable seat mounted therein, a back mounted on and foldably related to said seat, means for locking the back to the seat, and a folding-bed comprising a spacing section supported by the rear portion of the overturned seat, a rear section pivotally connected with said spacing section, supporting means for the rear section connected With said frame, a main intermediate section disposed above the overturned seat and pivotally connected to said Spacing section, a foot-section movably connected with the main intermediate section, and actuating means for the foot-section connected With said seat.

6. In a structure of the character set forth, the combination of a frame, a forwardly overturnable seat mounted therein, and a folding-bed comprising a spacing section carried by the seat, a rear section pivotally connected With said spacing section, supporting means for the rear section carried by said frame, actuating means for said supporting means connected With said seat, a main intermediate section pivotally connected with said spacing section, links connecting said main intermediate section With said seat, said mentioned sections being adapted to fold into U-form beneath the seat, a foot section pivotally connected with the main intermediate section and extending upvvardly therefrom When the struct-ure is in sofa form, and actuating means for said foot-section connected With said seat.

7. In a structure of the character set forth, the combination of a'frame, a forwardly overturnable seat mounted therein, a folding-bed comprising a spacing section, amain intermediate section, and a rear section normally folded in U-form and housed beneath the seat, said spacing section and main intermediate section being carried by the seat, a foot-section connected with the main intermediate section and normally occupying a standing position in the rear of said seat, anda movable back independent of and housmg said foot-section, said back being carried by and foldable on said seat.

S. In a structure of the character sety forth, the combination of a frame, a forwardly overturnable seat mounted therein a back mounted on and foldably related to said seat, means for locking the back to the seat, and a folding-bed comprising a plurality of foldably related bed-sections mounted on said seat, including a foot-section normally housed in standing position by the back, legs foldably connected with said foot- 'section and actuating means for said footsection and legs connected with said seat.

9. In a structure of the character set forth, the combination of a frame equipped near its front corners with rigid mountings, links suspended from said mountings, a forwardly overturnable seat connected with said links, a back foldably mounted on the seat, hangers carried by the seat, and a folding-bed comprising a spacing section pivotally mounted on said hangers, a rear section pivotally connected with the spacing section, links connecting the rear sections to the frame, links connecting said secondnamed links to said hangers, a main intermediate section pivotally connected with said spacing section, links connecting themain intermediate section with said seat, a foot section pivotally connected with the main intermediate section, and links connecting said foot-section and seat serving to turn the footsection with relation to the intermediate section in the folding and un'- folding operations of the seat.

In a structure of the character set forth, the combination of a frame, an over-- turnable seat, a back foldably mounted thereon, automatically actuated locking mechanism serving to secure the seat and back together in locked relation, and a folding-bedcomprising a plurality of foldably related sections actuated by the seat in the folding and unfolding operations.

11. In a structure of the character set forth, the combination of a frame, an overturnable seat mounted in said frame, a back foldably mounted on said seat, locking mechanism adapted to secure the seat and back together in angular relation, means within the frame for actuating said locking mechanism when the seat is returned to its normal position in the sofa, and a folding bed comprising a plurality of foldably-related bed-sections connected with and actuated by the seat.

12. In a structure of the character set forth, the combination of a frame provided internally with shoulders, a forwardly overturnable seat mounted in said frame, standards carried by the rear corner-portions of said seat, a back pivotally connected with said standards and foldably related to the seat, double-acting locking pawls mounted on said standards and adapted to lock the back in either folded or angular position relative to the seat, spring-pressed members serving to actuate said pawls and adapted to be engaged by said shoulders of said frame when the seat is returned to the normal sofa position, and a folding-bed comprising a plurality of foldably Vrelated bed-sections connected with and actuated by the seat in the folding and unfolding operations.'

13. In a structure of the character set forth, the combination of a frame, a forwardly overturnable seat mounted therein, and a folding-bed comprising a spacing section pivotally mounted on the seat, a rear section pivotally connected therewith, links connecting said rear section with the frame, links connecting said first-named links with the seat, a main intermediate section pivotally connected with said spacing section, links connecting said main intermediate section with the seat, a foot-sectiony ivotally connected with the main interme iate section and equipped with arms, a truss extending across the bed at the junction between said 'intermediate section and said foot-section, legs pivotally connected with said foot-section and links connecting said legs and said arms to said seat.

In a structure of the character-set forth, the combination of a frame, a forwardly overturnable seat mounted therein, a folding-bed comprising a spacing section, a main intermediate section, and a rear section normally folded in U-form and housed beneath the seat, said spacing section and main intermediate section being carried by the seat, a foot-section connected with the main intermediate section and normally occupying a standing position, in the rear of said seat, and a back independent of and housing said foot-section and adapted to be carried forwardly to a position in front of the sofa-frame in the operation of unfolding the bed. f f- 16. In a structure of the character set forth, the combination of a frame, a forwardly overturnable seat mounted therein and adapted to be swung to an inverted position in front of the frame, a folding-bed comprising a plurality of folding sections normally housed beneath the seat and an upstanding section disposed back of the seat, said folding-bed adapted to be unfolded in the operation of swinging the seat to an inverted position infront of said frame, and a back foldably mounted on the seat` and independent of and housing the upstanding bedsectionand adapted to be carried forward to a position in front of the vframe in the operation of converting the structureJ to bed form.
