ATTACHMENT FOR MEAT-SLICERS.

To all whom it mag concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR H. HIEATZ- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore city, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Meat- S licers, of which the following is a specification. 1
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in attachments for meat slicing machines, preferably bacon slicers, and has for its object the provision of a simple mechanism which may be readily attached to any bacon slicing machine of any standard make, and when in position will receive the slices of bacon from the knife and deposit them, one upon the other, in such a manneras to present to view the lean part of the slices while the fat portion of said slices are overlapped and covered by the lean of each following slice, thus making apleasing display.
.A further object of my invention is to provide a device which will deliver the sliced bacon upon a sheet of paper in such a manner that it may be quickly wrapped and presented to the customer without being touched by the hand of the operator.
I attain these and other objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of my invention.

Similar characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
A represents the vertical arm of an ordinary sl cing machine, which carries the rotat 'ng knife K, and C denotes the reciproeating carriage which presents the strip of bacon B to the knife, and F is a portion of the frame of the machine. I provide a supporting frame or bracket 1 which ma be attached to the frame F in any suitab e manner, said bracket 1 havingan upwardly forward extendin arm 1*, to which is secured a vertical sha t or arbor 2, upon which is.
mounted for rotation, the spider 3, having arms 3*, to the outer ends of which are pivoted, as at 4, the bacon transfer members 4:, which are of suitable length and breadth to accommodate slices of bacon of various sizes. The outer curved head portion 4 of the transfer member is provided with rows of spurs 4 to engage and hold the slices of bacon while they are being taken from the knife and placed upon the paper 5 upon the endless carriage 5. The outer faces of the meat transfer member are provided with horizontal grooves 4 in which lie the curved arms of the discharge members. Said arms 4 are connected together at their centers by a bar 4 which is provided with an inwardly extending stem 4 which is squared the greater portion of its length and adapted to slide in the squared opening 4 in the arms 4 of the members 4. The inner ends of the arms 4 are provided with enlarged central opening 4 to receive the spring 4 which will return discharge fingers 4 to their normal position within the grooves 4 after the inner end of the stem 4 has become disengaged from the discharging cam 6. The inner ends of the arms 4' the cam 6 and discharge slices of bacon from the face of the member 4.
Secured to the lower face of the hub of the spider 3 and adapted to revolve therewith is a ratchet disk 7 which is engaged by pawl 7 carried by a lever 8 which is loosely mounted on the fixed shaft 2. The outer end of said lever 8 has pivotally connected thereto one end of link bar 9 whose opposite end is pivotally connected by a suitable bracket 9 to the traveling meat carriage C, and as the carriage C moves back and forth across the face of the knife, the link 9, lever 8, pawl 7, and ratchet 7 will cause the transfer unit to revolve a distance equal to one quarter of its circumference. By referring to Fig. 1 of the drawing it will be seen that'one slice of bacon 10 has just been deposited, a second piece of bacon 10* is being carried by the next transfer head, and a third slice of bacon 10 is being cut by the knife K and pressed onto the spurs 4 by the flexible guide 11 secured to the arm A. The next slice of bacon to be cut will be received by the transfer member 4-. which has just been restored to-normal position by the inclined face 6 of the track 6. Extending forward from the bracket 1 are parallel arms 1 which have bearings for the shafts 12 and 13. The shaft 12 is provided with loose wheels 12 and the shaft 13 with drive wheels 13 over which'the endless conveyer 5 is adapted to travel. The conveyer is moved forward a predetermined distance step by step through the medium of lever 14, pawl 14*v and ratchet 13 which receives motion back and forth every time the meat carriage makes a working stroke by reason of the fixed arm 15 which is secured to the carriage coming in contact and moving the bell-crank lever 16 (pivoted on the bracket 1) first in one direction, then the other (see Fig. 1), said lever 16 being adjustably connected to the lever let-by the rod 14"., said adjustment will also permit of the conveyer being moved forward a proper distance to accommodate slices of bacon of various widths so that one slice may be laid upon the other just far enough to cover the fat strip of the under slice.
A roll of paper, designated by 17, is supported under the bracket 1 in any suitable manner and the strip .of paper may be led upward and under a feed-roller 17 through a guide 17 under a lmife17 and out onto the conveyer 5, as shown. When a suflicient amount of meat has been deposited upon the conveyer, the operator may push down upon the handle 17 d of the knife 17, thus cutting the strip of paper which may be used to wrap the slices of meat. The 0 erator may then give the conveyer a slig t forward movement which will feed the strip of paper from the roll forward far enough to be under the first slice of bacon of the next order to be cut.
I claim:
1. The combination with a slicing machine, of means for receiving the slices formed by said machine and distributing the slices in offset relation relative to one another.
2. The combination with a slicing machine, of means for receiving the slices formed by said machine and distributing the slices in offset relation relative to one another with the edge of each slice overlapping a portion of the next adjacent slice.
3. The combination with means for dis charging slices of material in a direction transverse to the plane thereof, of a device for receiving said slices, and' means for moving said receiving device in a direction transverse to the direction of discharge of said slices, said discharging means and said moving means being arranged to operate at different times.
4. The combination with a slicing machine, of means. for receiving slices formed by said machine and discharging said slices broadside-down, and a horizontally movable device for receiving said slices from said first mentioned receiving means.
5.'The combination with means for supporting a sheet of wrapping material, and mechanism for distributing a series of slices over the surface of said material ofi'set relatively to one another in the direction of the plane of said material.
6. The combination with a slice receiving platform, of means for shifting said platform in the direction of the plane thereof, and means for periodically depositing slices on the surface of said platform. 1
7. The combination witha platform, of means for intermittently depositingslices in flatwise position upon said platform, and means for shifting the position of said platform in the direction of the plane thereof.
8. The combination with a platform, of means for periodically depositing slices on said platform, and means for shiftin the position of said platform in timed re ation withthe deposit of said slices in a direction to-change the receiving portion of said platform.

means for discharging slices downwardly from said machine with the planes of the slices extending horizontally, and a horizontally movable table for receiving said slices.
13. In combination, a slicing machine.
mechanism for discharging slices formed by said machine successively in substantially the same position relative to said machine, a platform for receiving the slices, and mechanism for shifting said platform relative to the position of discharge of said slices to cause each succeeding slice to be received by said platform in an offset position relative to the preceding one.
14. In combination, a slicing machine, a flexible conveyer for receiving slices from said machine, means for moving the slices away from the knife and depositing them on said conveyer, and means for imparting an intermittent movement to said conveyer.
15. In combination, a slicing machine, and mechanism for depositing the slices formed by said machine in layer formation, said mechanism comprising means for distributing the slices relative to one another in a direction of the plane of the layer.
16. The combination with a slicing machine, of a platform for receiving the slices formed by said machine, mechamsm for imparting motion to said platform to cause the slices to be distributed over the surface of said platform relative to one another, and
means for receiving the slices from the knifeof said slicing machine turnin said slices into position with their broa -sides down and discharging said slices vertically onto said platfor 17. The combination with a slicing machine, of mechanism for receiving the slices from the knife of said machine, bringin the planes of said slices into horizontal position and discharging said slices vertically, a horizontally arranged conveyer for receiving said slices, means for imparting an intermittent movement to said conveyer in timed remeans for varying the amount of said movement.

The combination with a slicing machine, of a device for receiving slices therefrom comprising a carrier havlng a substantially vertical receiving surface, means on said surface for engaging the slices, a guard for holding the slices against said surface, and means for moving said carrier to bring said surface downwardly with the slice on the lower side thereof after said slice has moved out of contact with said guard;
19. Conveying mechanism for slices comprising a guide, a transfer member mounted for movement along said guide and having means for engaging a slice, the said transfer member being arranged to swing by gravity when it has passed beyond said guide into a position in which the slice is beneath the member, and means for removin the slice from said engaging means while in this position.
20. In combination, a transfer member pivotally mounted and having a curved head portion with grooves thereln, ejector arms arranged to lie in the grooves on said head portion, a spring for resiliently holding said arms in said grooves, and means for moving said arms against the tension of said spring for ejecting the slice carried by said head portion.
