Be it known that I, Gmns G. BoLE, a cltizen of the United States, residing at in the county of Branch and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sifter- Grates, of which the following is a specifivcation.

This invention relates to grates, and more particularly to a sifter grate for use in connection with coal burning stoves.V

One of the main objects of the invention is to provide a sifter which may be used in connection with'a grate of a coal stove of standard construction, this sifter forming a supplemental grate and serving to separate the cinders from the ashes when the main grate of the stove is shaken or oscillated in the usual manner.

A further Objectis to which may be readily secured to a stove grate so as to be positioned beneath the same for the purpose of receiving the ashes discharged from the stove grate when the same is oscillated or rocked, this sifter being provided with a lower detachable section so as to permit the cinders collected therein to be readily removed.

A further object is to provide a supplemental sifter grate of the character stated of simple construction and operation, which may be produced at small cost and may be readily applied to a stove grate of standard construction.

In the drawings Figure 1, is a top plan view of a grate constructed in accordance with my invention, showing a supporting bracket therefor and the outline of a portion of a fire pot.

A plurality of bracket arms 4 are secured to the stove grate a by means of securing screws 5 inserted through the inner ends of the arms and projecting through the radial slots 6 in the grate, securing nuts 7 being threaded on the upper ends of the screws. As will be obvious, these arms may be readily adjusted radially of the grate a to accommodate a sifter grate of proper size. By means of the radiating arms, the sifter grate is supported in concentric relation with the stove grate and spaced a short distance therefrom so as to permit escape of ashes and cinders from the ire pot about the periphery of the stove grate a in the usual manner. The stove grate may be shaken or oscillated by means of a shaker handle 8 projecting therefrom in the well known manner. j Upper section 2 of the shaker grate l is provided, at its lower edge, with an integral ring member 9. A plurality of spaced inwardly. directed securing members 10 of channel construction are secured to the under face of this ring. These channel members are of arcuate outline and conforming to the curvature of ring 9. As will be noted more clearly from Fig. 2 of the drawings, the channel members 10 are directed inwardly and coperate with similar channel members 11 which are secured to the upper surface of an integral ring member 12 formed at the upper edge of the lower section 3 of shifter grate 1 to detachably secure the two grate sections together. It will be understood, of course, that the members 9 and 10 are so spaced as to permit members 11 to be readily inserted between members l() when the lower section 3 is raised into proper relation with the upper section 2 after which the lower section 3 is turned so as to bring the channel members into proper operative relation, thus securing the lower section of the grate to the upper section, while permitting it to be readily detached therefrom. To prevent accidental detachment of the lower section of the ate when the stove grate is shaken or oscil ated, a double hook 13 is loosely secured at its lower end to a lug 14 formed integrally with one of the bars 15 of the hook 13 and stud 16. With lower section, the upper eye of this hook being adapted to engage snugly over a stud 16 which projects from one of the bars 17 of the upper grate section 2. This hook serves to edectually prevent accidental detachment of the lower grate section and may be readily moved out of engagement with the stud 16 so as to permit removal of this member.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to .secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination with a stove grate of an upper sifter grate section depending therefrom., said upper `section being secure( to the stove grate for -oscillation therewith, a lower sifter grate :section .depending from said upper section, and detachably secured thereto, the two said sections of the sifter grate cooperating to provide a basket-like structure for receiving material from above the stove grate, and means for releasably securing the lower section of the sifter grate to the upper section thereof, `so as to cause oscillation of said lower section when the stove grate is oscillated.

2. 1n combination, a stove grate mounted to have an oscillatory movement imparted thereto, a supplemental .sifter grate of basket-like formation suspended from the stove grate and movable therewith and comprising an upper section connected to the stove grate and a 'lower section, there being interengaging chan-nel members formed with the respective sections, and means between the sections to prevent the accidental disengagement of the said interengaging channel members.
