Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. D. BANGK,

a citizenl of the United States, residing at Wilmington, in the county of New Hanover, State of North Carolina, have invented certainf' new and useful Improvements in Closet-Seats, of which the following is a description, reference being. had to the accompanyingdrawings, forming a part hereof.

My invention relates to automatic devices for closing the seats and operating the valves of so-called dry or other closets and has forits object to provide a device which will be simple and inexpensive in construction, which will be particularly adapted for use lwith `'dry or antiseptic tank toilet devices and will be particularly effective in connection with such devices in preventing the entrance of ies.

A further object of my invention is to provide in connection with a deviceof the character automatic means for operating the valve of a water or antiseptic tank. 1

With these and other objects hereinafter explained in view, my invention consists in the construction and combination of devices hereinafter described and claimed.

Referring to the drawings:

Figure 1 is a side view of'a complete device embodying my invention.

Fig. 2 is a plan view of the seat and cover and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view on an enlarged scale.

In the drawings, 1 indicates the -vault here shown as of a usual type communicating by a pipe 2 with a clean-outitank (not shown), and 3 indicates the usual top forI the vault having the usual opening 4. On the top 3 is secured the seat 5, this seat being fixedly secured or, if preferred, hinged at 6 to the top. In rear of the opening the seat 1s provided with a fixed strip 7, to the front edge of which is hinged the cover 8, this cover beingarranged when in closed position to fit snugly against the seat so as to prevent entrance of iiies'. The hinges 9 may be of any usual construction.

Pivoted on the rear portion of the seat is a hook or latch 10 which, when the cover is in raised position, engages a plate or projection 11 on the fixed strip 7 to hold the cover in raised position. end 15 of which projects upward through an opening in the seat preferably well forward of the middle of the seat opening. At its rear end the rod is bent upward as shown at 16 in position to strike the hook or latch 10. rPhe pivot 13 of rod 14 is well forward of its inidlength so that the fweight of the rear portion of the rod will cause its end 16 to be normally depressed and its forward end 15 to be raised above the upper surface of the seat when the cover is raised, in position to be pressed downward by the weight of a person occupying the seat. When the forward end 15 is thus pressed down until it is iush with the upper surface of the seat, the rear end 16 of the rod will be forced up against the hook or latch 10 to disengage it from the plate or projection 11, thus releasing the cover to permit it to fall forward to close the opening in the seat as soon as the seat is no longer occupied. This forward turning of the cover on its hinges is aided by a spring 17 secured on the fixed strip 7 an'd put under the cover into its open position.

It will thus be seen that the cover will be closed down onto the seat at once when the seat is no longer in use and will eiectively prevent flies from getting into or out of the vault.'

When the device as above described is to be used in connection with a tank for supplying water for flushing a closet of usual construction or for supplying antiseptic solution to a vault such as above described, the cover 8 is arranged as it returns to closed position, to automatically trip or otherwise operate the valve of the iiushing or antiseptic tank. The flushing or antiseptic tank is shown at 20 with valve (not shown) arranged to be operated b vconnecting means here shown as a chain 21 connected at its lower end to the rear end of a tripping lever 22 pivoted at 23 in bracket 24.- carried by the vault top 8. A lever 25 pivoted at 26 in a suitable recess in the top 3 has its rear end in line with and adapted to strike upward against the forward end of the tripping lever 22. The forward end of the lever 25 is in line with a vertically movable rod 27, the upper end of which normally projects above the upper surface of the seat 5 in position to be struck and forced down by the cover 8 when it is closed down, to force the forward end of'lever 25 down and to cause its rear end t0 raise the forward end of tripping lever 22 and trip the valve of the iushing or antiseptic tank.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:

1. The combination with a closet seat of a strip fixed thereto in rear of the opening in the seat having a plate extending above its upper surface, a coverl hinged, to, the fixed strip adapted to close the opening in the seat, a latch pivoted to the, correr adapted to engage the, plate on the fixed strip, a spring carried by the iiXed strip adapted to, bear against the cover when in raised position, and meane, carried by the seat for disengagf ing the latch.

2. The combination with a closet seat of a strip, fixed thereto in. rear of the opening therein, a cover hinged to the fixed strip and adapted to, cover the opening in the seat, a` latch pivoted to the cover, means carried by the tized strip to, be engaged by the latch, a rod pivoted in the seat alongside the openingfr therein having its rear end extending upward through the tiXed strip in line with the latch andhaving'its forward endextending up through the seat in positi-onto be depressed by the person occupying the 'seat to disengage the latch, and a spring carried by thelflXed strip. adaptedtdthroqw the cover forward when the latch is disengaged.
