Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 11, 1916. Serial No. 114,315.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, J 0111s F. OCoNNoR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certainnew and useful Improvement in Railway-Car Draft- Rigging, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in railway car draft rigging.
The object of my invention is to provide a cheap and efficient draft rigging.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section taken on line 2-2 of Fig 2, illustrating a draft rigging embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a cross section taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a cross section taken on line H of Fig. 1. Fig. 1 illustrates a modified form of connection between the draw-bar and yoke member. Fig. 5 illustrates a further modification.
In said drawing, and referring to the preferred form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, 6 indicates the draft members or parts of the car frame to which the draft rigging is applied, and 7 a draw-bar provided with the upper and lower shoulders 8 and 9, respectively, and the usual transverse key slot 10. A yoke 11 is connected to the draw-bar, the said yoke being formed of an I-beam having an upper flange 12, a lower fiange'13 and a web 14:. At its forwardend, the web is cut away to form a pocket 15 to receive the butt of the drawbar and to provide the upper gib 16 and the lower gib 17 to engage the upper and lower shoulders 8 and 9, respectively of the drawbar. Immediately back of the pocket 15 the web is provided with a longitudinal slot 18, through which passes the transverse key 19, forming the forward key of the draft gear. Near its rear end the yoke member is also provided with the slot 20 through its web, for the passage of the rear key 21. The said keys l9 and 21 are extended through appropriate slots 2222 in the draft members 6 and have at their ends the cotters 23 to prevent their accidental removal. Springs 24: are mounted on either side of the yoke member 11, thus providing a spring between each draft member 6 and the yoke member 11. A tie plate 25 extends transversely of the draft members and is secured to said members by suitable means, as for instance the bolts 26. The said tie plate 25 is provided at its center with a longitudinal channel 27 to receive the lower flange 13 of the yoke 11, the said tie plate 25 also being provided with preferably integral upwardly extending bends 28, each to support one of the springs 24. At its forward end the yoke is provided with a removable band 29 which passes about the same and is adapted to hold the draw-bar within the yoke. The said band is provided with lateral perforations 30 for the passage of the key or bolt 31, which is provided with a head 32 at one end, a cotter 33 at the other end and extends through the transverse key slot 10 of the draw-bar.
By removing the carry iron 25, the entire gear may be dropped downwardlv from between the draft members and the draw-bar may be removed from the yoke by extracting the pin 31 and removing the band 29.
On rearward movement of the draw-bar, the yoke slides rearwardly upon the rear key 21, which is stopped against the rear ends of the slots 22 in the draft members, thus compressing the springs between the keys l9 and 21, and on forward movement of the draw-bar the yoke is drawn forwardly, sliding the rear key 21 forwardly in the slots 22 in the draft members and compressing the springs between it and the front key 19, which is held stationary in the forward ends of the slots 22 in the draft members.
In the modified form of yoke and drawbar connection, illustrated in Fig. 4: of the drawings, the draw-bar 50 is provided with the upper and lower shoulders 51 and 52, respectively, the yoke 53 is an I-beam in shape, having the laterally extended upper gib 54: to engage the upper shoulder 51 of the draw-bar and the lower laterally extended gib 55 to engage the lower shoulder 52 of the draw-bar. A transverse web 56 forms the rear limit of the pocket 57 in which the draw-bar butt is received. and back of said transverse web there is provided a perforation 58 in the web 59 of the I-shaped draw-bar for the passage of Near their forward ends the flanges 66 and 67 are broadened as indicated at 6969, forming between them the pocket 70 to receive the butt 'of the draw-bar, the said flanges being provided with the upper and lower gibs 71 and 72, respectively, to engage the draw-bar shoulders 63 and 64-. A fol lower '78 is mounted between the upper and lower flanges of the yoke, immediately back of: the draw-bar, and near its rear end the yoke is provided with a transverse slot 75 for the passage of the rear follower 76. Springs 77, one on either side of the yoke, are mounted between the followers. A transverse web 78 is provided immediately strengthening ribs 7 9 hack of the rear followed 76, forming a broad bearing surface for the rear follower to engage. Near its forward end the yoke is providedwith upper and lower longitudinal 79, that reinforce the forward end of the yoke and make it sufficiently strong to hold the draw-bar therein, without the employment of keys or hands or other similar connecting means.
