CROSS EQUALIZATIUN 0F SPRING-RIGGING- meagre.
\ Application filed October 31, 1918.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that T, WILLIAM F. Kisser, Jr., a citizen of the United States, and residing at Altoona, Blair county, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cross Equalization of Spring-Rigging, of which the following is a specification.
As is well known the spring rigging in a locomotive is arranged as a three-point suspension. For example, in a locomotive having two complete engines under one boiler, the spring rigging on each side of the rear engine is independent of that on the other, but equalized throughout its full length. Thus each side forms one point of support of the three-point suspension. The front engine is equalized throughout and has a cross equalizer in front of necting the two equalizers on the sides, there by providing'the locomotives of the consolidation type, the equalizing springs between'the first and second. pairs of drivers are omitted and one end of each equalizer overthe first and second driving boxes is anchored to the frame, either directly or to a helical springresting on the frame. The cross complished by means of a semi-elliptic spring. However, in some instances such a spring can not be used and obtain sufficient flexibility. I The present invention relates to a cross equalization construction which is designed to take the place of the semi-elliptic spring arrangement used heretofore and give more room for other parts of the locomotive. To this end a transverse equalizing bar has been substituted for the semi-elliptic spring artransverse bar carries on WlllCll is supported the rangement, and this helical springs rear end of the truck equalizer.
The features of novelty and objects of the invention will be apparent from the description taken in connection with the drawings,

My invention is adapted for application in connection with locomotives having different arrangements of spring rigging. As shown, there are the usual side equalizers A, A, adjacent to the front drivers and a central longitudinal truck equalizer B having its front bearing upon the frame of the pony truck.
Between the first driver wheels 1 suspend an improved equalizer consisting of a cross bar provided with bearings for springs 2, 2, 2, of any suitable character, helical springs being shown, and upon a cap piece 3 resting on said springs is a bearing for the rear end of the truck. equalizer bar B. As shown the e ualizer bar D is suspended at each end to a anger 4 suspended by side legs 5, 5, from the adjacent side equalizer A.
In the construction shown the equalizer bar D is cast in the form of a frame having a ends of the springs is provided with lugs 10' centering Within the springs and with a central bearing face w for the end of the equalizing lever b. p
By the use of the transverse equalizing bar with spring supports for the central longitudinal equalizer, I secure a much morecompact arrangement of parts than is possible in the ordinary construction where semi-elliptical springs are employed.
Without limiting myself to the arrangement and construction of parts shown, I claim as my invention:
1. The combination in a locomotive, of a transverse suspended equalizer bar provided with springs and a bearing on' said springs for the rear end of a central longitudinal I equalizer, substantially as set forth.
too
lldti' s the side equalizers,
suspended transverse equalizing bar, springs supported thereby, and a cap restin upon said springs and provided with a bearmg for the rear end of a central longitudinal equalizing bar, substantially as set forth. 4. In a locomotive, in combination with a transverse equalizer bar suspended from the front ends of the side equalizers, a truck equalizer bar in front of: said transverse bar,
5. In a locomotive, in combination with the side equalizers, a transverse equalizer bar suspended from the front ends of the side and means yieldingly supporting the rear end of said truck baron the transverse bar.
equalizers, a truck equalizer bar in front of said transverse bar, and a coil spring carried by said transverse bar to support the rear end of said truck bar. J
6. In a locomotive, in combination with the side equalizers, a transverse equalizer bar -suspended from the frontiends of the side equalizers, said bar being trough shaped, a plurality of coil springs carried by said bar, a bearing member resting on said springs, and a truck e ualizer bar in front of said transverse bar aving its rear end carried by said bearing member; In testimony whereof I ajfix my si ature.
