Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented lBeb. d, 1919.,
Application filed September 25, 1918. Serial No. 255,603.
A To all whom it may concern:
'fit over the top Be it known that I, GUSTAV Home, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Dallas, in the county of Dallas and State of Texas, have invented a new and Improved Mail-Box, of which the following is a description.
My invention relates to mail boxes and more particularly to mail boxes for rural delivery.
An object of my invention is to provide a rural mail box improved in various particulars with respect to simplicity and cheapness of construction as well as increased accessibility for the convenient insertion and removal of the=mail matter; and to provide a novel signal pivoted on the cover of the box and arranged to have certain advantages as will appear from the specific description following. 7
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar reference characters indicate corresponding vlews.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a mail box embodying my invention, parts in section and others broken away;
Fig. 2 is a cross section on the line 2 Fig. 1, with the cover in'a position closing the box;
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 but with the cover in position to aiford access to the box- Fig. 4 is a front view of my improved mail box on a reduced scale and with the signal in the lowered position.
In carrying out my invention in accordance with the illustrated example, the box is formed with a cylindrical body 10 having closed ends and on the underside there is formed or rigidly secured to said body parallel spaced depending flanges 11, whereby to of a board, post, or the like, indicated at A to sustain the box in position.
A semi-circular cover 12 is provided fitting over the box 10, the ends of the cover being outside of the, ends of the box and pivoted thereto coaxial with the box by rivets 13 or equivalent means, to permit a free turning movement of the cover about the axis of the box. The box has a longitudinal opening 14 at or near the top of suflicient size to allow for the placing and removal of the mail matter and the cover 12 parts in all the has a longitudinal opening 15 adapted to be brought into or out of register with the opening 14 by the turning of the cover 12 as will be clear from a comparison of Figs. 2 and 3. On the cover 12 at the front longitudinal edge is a bead 16 preferably turned about a core 16" to stiffen said bead, the latter forming a substantial handle or gripping member for the convenient raisin and lowering of the cover to the open and c osed positions.
Associated with the cover 12 is a signal having an elongated shank 18 pivoted at the end as at 19 to the cover at one side of and below the opening 15 of said cover. The arrangement is such that the signal may be thrown to an upright position as indicated in Fig. l to indicate that mail is in the box, or swung to a lowered horizontal position as shown in Fig. 4. In the lowered position of the signal 17 it will be seen that it lies against the cover 12 below the lower edge of the opening 15 and the signal proper or disk 17 which is broader than the shank, rests on the bead 16 to limit the downward movement of the signal. Therefore, the signal is well supported in a manner to not interfere with the raising and lowering of the cover and in a position to not obstruct the opening 15. Preferably the signal is curved transversely to conform approximately to the curvature of the cover.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
A mail box including a cylindrical body having closed ends, means on said body for fixedly securing the same to a support, and a semi-cylindrical cover having its ends pivoted to the heads of said body coaxial with the latter, said body having an opening at the top and said cover having an opening therein adapted to be brought into or out of register with the opening in the body; together with a longitudinal head on said cover alon the lower front edge thereof, and a signa having a shank pivoted at one end to said cover below and at one side of the opening in the latter, said signal being swingable to approximately an upright position, or to a lowered horizontal position disposed along the cover between the opening therein and the bead and resting on said bead.
