Ee it known that l, OTTO THIEME, a citizen of the nited States, residing at the city ment in Paper-Feed Controls for Calculating-Machines, of Which the iollmving is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in Which- Figure 1 is a top plan View of a combined adding and typewriting machine on which my improved paper feed control is employed.

This invention relates to a new and useiul improvement in paper feed controlling mechanism incr calculating machines, and is an application filed by me May 20, 1910, Serial Number 98,853.
The calculating machine disclosed in the parent case is of the combined adding and typeWrit-ing machine class commercially known as the Moon-Hopkins billing ma chine, the particular type of Moon-Hopkins billing machine disclosed in said parent application being characterized by a tally roll on the tally strip of which a duplicate record is kept of the items and totals thereof paper carried by the paper carriage located at the upper forward portion of the machine and on the sheet of paper carried by which is also received printing impressions from the words-printing mechanism of the type- Writer.

This present application relates to the means for feeding the tally strip and controlling the feed thereof so that line-spacing' of the tally strip only occurs *when necessary or desired.

The laterally movable paper carriage 5 carries a notched bar 89 on which are adjustably mounted blocks 578 supporting pivoted stops 579. These stops coperate with an arrow head 577a on the forward end of a bar 577 having a. slot and pin connection with a frame part of the machine, as shown in Figs. l and 6, whereby when t-he carriage 5 is moved laterally, these stop blocks 57 9 will successively pass the arrow head 577a and, by engaging the anticlinal portions thereof, force the bar 577 rearwardly. f this lateral movement is incident to tabulation. the blocks 579 are so positioned on the ber 39 that at the end of each tabulation movement, they will lie in front of the head 577L and in this mannerhold the bar 577 rearwardly while the paper carriage 5 is stationary.
The rear end of bar 577 is connected to a rock arm 576, on the inner end of sleeve 57a mounted on the shaft 575, finding bearing in the frame parts of the machine. The upper end of sleeve 574 carries an arm 573 to which is connected a bar 572 having a slot and pin connection with the side framing of t-he machine whereby the rear yend of said bar may be guided in its movement. The rear end of bar 572 is bifurcated and normally engages the upper end of a lever 570 carrying the pin 570a at its upper end. This pin is normally held forward by means of springs 570i. The lower end of bar 570 is connected to a moving part of the adding mechanism, not shown herein, but which causes the bar 57() to be operated at each operation ofthe adding mechanism, f1'. e., the bar 570 is first caused to be lowered and then to be raised. If the bar 577 stands in its forward position during this operation of the adding mechanism, the vibration of bar 570 will be idle; but if onel of the stops 579 holds the, bar 577 rearwardly. pin 57W on the upper end of bar 57() will be 4caused to engage in slot 568a in the forward end of leven568 mounted on shaftl 502. and

Plate 568 is fixed to the shaft 502 and when the pin 570a lies in the slot, as shown in Fig. 5, the adding mechanism is operated, and bar 570 will be depressed, which movement causes the plate 568 to .be likewise depressed, rocking the shaft 502. As the bar 570 moves downward, its pin 570a will pass behind guard finger 582 and eventually engage the guard plate 581 and cause it to move in unison with plate 568. iVhen pin 570a is thus located behind the guard finger, the guard fin ger closes the slot 5681 and prevents the withdrawal of pin 570% On the upward movement of bar 570, the plate 568 and the guard plate 581 will rise. together until the guard plate is arrested by the shouldered stop C. The continued upward movement of the plate 568 will locate the yslot 568a above the guard finger, as shown in Fig. 5. and the slot being thus exposed, the pin 570"L may be disengaged from the plate 568` which will occur when stop 579 on the paper carriage is movedout of engagement with the arrow head 577A.
Plate 568 carries a post 568b which passes through a slot. in the guard plate 581. This post is fixed to the plate 568 and carries a fixed arm 584 at its outer end, which fixed arm is provided with a pin or lateral projection 585. This pin coiiperates with a bell crank lever 593 mounted on the end of a shaft 5011 (see Fig. 5) which shaft, by its rocking movement, effects the feeding of the inking ribbon not claimed herein).
lhen the plate or rock arm 568 is depressed to rock the shaft 502, the platen carried by the frame 508. is brought into contact with the type in the'prining line, but the. pressure necessary for effecting the printingimpression is not exerted upon said platen until the lost motion between the plate 511 and slot in the shaft 502 is taken up. `When this lost motion has been over come. the final pressure is placed upon the platen. this occurring at the last operation of the downward movement. of thev rock arm 568.
lVhen the rock arm or plateI 568 is lifted` it is imn'laterial whether the frame 503 is first restored to its normal position or whether the lost motion of the plate in the groove is first taken up. The normally retracted position of the frame is determined by means disclosed in the parent application. and when the frame 508 is arrested in its retracted position, the shaft 502 continues to be rocked. thereby absorbing the lost motion referred to until the stop member 56.0 engages the track plate 520. T his continued rocking movement of the sey sha-ft 502- is utilized in line-spacing the tally strip.

pawl designed to cooperate with said ratchet, said pawl being operated by the same means which rocks the carriage, and a notched bar which is adjustable both rotatably and lon gltudinally whereby the ratchet may be operated to feed the paper only in certain pol sitions of the carriage.
