Specifloation of Letters Intent.
Patented Feb. d, 1919.
Application filed November 6, 1918. Serial No. 26;,349.
To all whomz't may concern:
Be it known that 1,.BENJAMIN Mo ADoo, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Boston, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have 1nvented certain new and useful Improvements in Attaching Devices, of which the following is a specification.
his invention comprehends generally improvements in that class of invention known as buckles, buttons and clasps and more particularly relates to an attaching device.
It is the principal aim and object of the invention to provlde a device of the above mentioned character wherein the main supporting plate or body is designed to removably receive and support an ornamental plate, it being preferable to employ a plurality of the latter so that one or more of them may be mounted in the main supporting body, to suit the desires of the user.
As an equally important object, the present invention contemplates the provision of a device of the above mentioned character wherein the main supporting plate and each of the ornamental plates are provided with cooperative means for removably mounting any one of the ornamental plates on the front face of the main body or late.
It is a more specific object 0 this 'invention to rovide a device of the above mentioned c aracter wherein the top face of the main supporting plate is ornamented in such a manner that 1t will cooperate with any of the ornamental plates, mounted therein, to provide a complete design and it is preferred that the design represent a mark or star indicative of some branch of the national service and also composed of the national colors which may likewise be placed on the front face of the main plate.
Among the other aims and objects of the present invention may be recited the provision of a device of the above mentioned character wherein the number of parts are The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 1s a front elevation of the improved device,
Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken on line 2 2 of l in the direction in which the arrows po1nt,.
Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1 in the direction in a which the arrows point,
F1g. 4 is a rear elevation of the invent1on,
is an elevational view of a group of the es1gns of the removable plate,
Fig. 6 is a similar view of another group, and
Fig. 7 is a perspective detail of one of the removable plates.
Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the above described views, to lndicate corresponding parts. Referring now, more particularly, to the accompanying drawings, there is pgpvided an attaching device, desirably consisting of a button generally indicated by the numeral 1, although it may be in the form of a bar pin, buckle, hat pin, ring, watch charm, fob, etc., as desired. In the present instance, the button may be said to consist of a main supporting body or plate in the form of a disk 2, of metal, the flat face of which is formed with spaced parallel grooves 3 desirably arranged vertically. The inner side walls of the grooves are straight as shown at 4, while the outer side walls are inclined away from the inner side walls and directed toward the inner wall or bottom 6 for a purpose that will presently appear. That portion of the disk between the grooves is provided with a transverse rib 7 desirably positioned slightly beneath the center of the disk although if desired it may be positioned near the lower edge and act as a supporting ledge for a purpose that will presently appear. Removably mounted on the front face of the disk is one of the removable or detachable plates generally indicated by the numeral 8 and of which there may be a plua tional engagement with the inclined walls 5 of the grooves 3, Whenthe flanges are arranged therein. Each detachable plate may bef slid while the one which is attached is vsupported by the rib or ledge 7 so as to be maintained substantiall centrally of the front face of the dis as indicated in Fig. 1.
As intimated, the front face of the disk is preferably provided with an ornamental design, composed in the present instance of a circular red center, a surrounding white ring and a blue ring surrounding the white rin in position with the outer edge of the dis the arrangement being indicated in in service, over there; number 13, having the White star on red background with a blue border boy killed or died in service number 14:, havin a blue star on red background with a white border boy honorably discharged; number 15 having a blue cross on white background with a red border girl in service, over there, number 16, with the white cross in the red background and blue border girl killed or died in the service; and number 17, having the blue cross on the red background with the white border girl honorably discharged. Likewise, the design on the plate 8 mounted in the disk and shown in Fig. 1 which has the red cross on white background and provided with a blue border may be said to represent a girl in service.
Suitable means for attaching the button may be said to consist of an inturned annular flange 19, formed at the edge of the disk and provided near its free edge and on its inner surface with an annular groove 20 in which is fitted an open ring 21., one terminal of which is bent to form a diametrically extending pin shank 22 for the attaching of the button in position in the customary manner.
It is believed in view of the foregoing dethe advantages of the invention will be readily apparent. However, it is to be observed that one or more of the plates .8 may be arranged on .the outer face of the main plate 3 and in such instance it is preferred that the rib 7 be arranged near the lower edge of the main plate. It is also believed to be apparent that an attaching device embodying this idea may be used by fraternities and other associations, etc. employing such ornamental designs as will suit the requirements. In manufacturing, it is desired that the grooves and rib 7 be stamped at the time the disk is cut..
Still further embodiments of the invention than those herein especially defined may be resorted to as conditions or preference may dictate, as may be in keeping with the hereto appended claims.
Having thus described the invention. what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Lettters Patent, is:
1. A device of the character described includinga main supporting and attaching body having spaced grooves in the outer face and extending entirely thereacross, an ornamental plate having inturned flanges at opposite side edges for removable and slidable engagement with the grooves, and a transverse rib carried by the front face of the main body and positioned between the grooves for supporting the ornamen .Ll plate.
2. A device of the character described ineluding a main supporting and attaching plate provided in its outer face with spaced parallel grooves extending entirely across the plate and having the outer side walls inclined in opposlte directions, an ornamental plate provided with inturned flanges at its opposite side edges and having the outer portion flared outwardly and designed for frictional engagement with the inclined walls of the groove when the flanges are slidably arranged in the groove, and a transverse rib formed on the front face of the main plate and positioned between the grooves for supporting and preventing the accidental displacement of the ornamental plate.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature hereto.
BENJAMIN H. MOADOO.
