COMBINED BELL AND BUZZER.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. KLEIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Bells and Buzzers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved combined bell and buzzer and has as its primary object to provide a device of this character designed to eliminate the use of separate devices for the above purposes and wherein the mechanism of the bell and the buzzer will be mounted upon a common base to be inclosed within a suitable cap therefor.
The invention has as a further object to simplify the construction of the bell as well as to simplify the construction of the buzzer so that the combined device may be placed upon the market at a minimum cost.
The invention has as a further object to so mount the mechanism of the bell and buzzer that the electrical connection with the said mechanism will include the metallic base of the device as a common return.
And the invention has as a still further object to provide a construction wherein the wires electrically connecting the bell and buzzer, as well as the binding posts employed, will all be concealed within the dust cap of the device so that the device will thus present a neat and attractive appearance.
Other and incidental objects will appear as the description proceeds and in the drawings wherein I have illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention and wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.

In carrying out the invention, my improved device is formed with a base or body 10 provided with a marginal flange l1 and having a reduced extension or neck 12 extending from one extremity thereof. The base may be cast or formed of molded insulation, but is preferably constructed from sheet metal. Connected with the extension 12 is the bell l3. Struck from the lower extremity of the base 10 at one side thereof is an upstanding post 14, while a similar post 15 is struck from the opposite side of the base adjacent its upper extremity. Formed in the base at a point opposite the post 15 is an opening 16 while a similar opening 17 is formed in the base at a point substantially opposite the post 14. The base is further provided with an elongated opening 18 immediately at the inner extremity of the post 14 with the opening 18 extending toward the opening 17.
Seating against the rear side of the base and housed within the flange 11 thereof is a plate 19 of suitable insulating material. This plate is connected at its upper extremity with the base by a screw or other suitable fastening device 20 while the lower extremity of the said plate is secured to the base by a lug 21 extending from the base at the lower edge of the post 14.. Connected with the base at one side of the opening 18 is a binding screw 22, and mounted upon the plate 19 to project within the said opening are spaced binding posts 23 and 24 re spectively, equipped at their outer extremi ties with binding screws similar to the screw 22 and arranged in alinement therewith. The binding posts 23 and 24 are seated flat against the plate 19 to overhang the lower edge thereof and formed on the inner extremities of the said posts are lateral lugs 27 extending through the plate for connecting the posts thereto, the said posts being insulated with respect to the base by the said plate. Mounted upon the plate to project through the opening 16 of the base is a contact post 25 while a similar contact post 26 is mounted upon the plate to project through the opening 17 in the base, the plate serving to also insulate these posts with respect to the base. As will nowbe observed, the magnets 29 and 30 and associated parts are mounted to be inclosed within a suitable cap' therefor detachably connected with the base 10 in the usual manner. Since a cap of any approved type may be used for this purpose, the said cap has not been-shown. However, in this connection attention is directed to the fact that'the binding posts 23 and 24 as well as 'the bindingscrew 22 are also arranged to be From the preceding description, it will now be understood that current supplied to the-post 23 will flow through the wire 39 to the winding of the magnet 29 and thence through the wire 40 to the post 25. From this post, the current will then continue through the vibrator 33 of the armature 34 and through the strip 32 to the post 14. current will then flow binding screw 22 connected with-the base. The magnet 29 will thus be energized to attract the armature 34 for actuating" the tapper 35to ring the bell 13. Current supplied to the binding post 24 will flow through the wire 41 to the winding of the gnet 30. The current will then continue through the said magnet winding and the wire-42'to the contact post 26. From this current will then continue through the vibrator 37 of the armature 38 and through the strip 36 to the post 15. 'From this post,. the current will then flow through the base 10 to return to the binding-screw 22. The magnet 30 will-accordingly be e nergized to attract tuating the buzzer.
It will therefore be seen that I provide an arrangement wherein the mechanism of both the bell and buzzer is mounted upon a common base to be housed within the cap therefor and a construction adapted to displace the use of separate devices for accomplishing the purposes of the present invention. Furthermore, I provide an arrangement wherein the single contact screw 22 pro- Vides a common return for the circuits of the bell and buzzer so that the wiring of the said circuits is accordingly simplified.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A device of the character described including a base, an insulating plate carried thereby, spaced posts upstanding from the base, an electro-magnet mounted upon one of said posts, an armature supported by the other of said posts and arranged to cooperate with the magnet, a vibrator associated with the said armature and electrically connected with the said last mentioned post, a contact post mounted upon the said plate and projecting through the base to cooperate with the said vibrator, the plate insulating the said contact post with respect to the base, a binding post mounted upon the said plate and insulated thereby with respect to the base, a second binding post mounted upon the base, electrical connection between the said first mentioned binding post and the magnet, and electrical connection between the magnet and said contact post, the post supporting the armature, the base and said last mentioned binding post providing a return for the circuit from the said vibrator.
2. A device of the character described including a base, an insulating plate carried thereby, spaced posts upstanding from the base, an electro-magnet mounted upon one of said posts, an armature supported upon the other of said posts to cooperate with the magnet, a binding post mounted upon the said plate and insulated thereby with respect to the base, lugs formed on the bindthe armature 38 for acing post and projecting through the plate for connecting the said binding post thereto, a second binding post mounted upon the base, and electrical connection between said first mentioned binding post and the magnet, the base and second mentioned binding post providing a return for the circuit from the magnet.
3. A device of the character described including a base provided with an opening, an electromagnet mounted upon the base, an armature arranged to cooperate with the said magnet, an insulating plate carried by the base to extend across said opening, and a binding post mounted upon the plate to project at its outer end over one edge thereof into the said opening for receiving a circuit wire entering through the opening from beneath the base, the said binding post being insulated by the plate with respect to the base and in circuit with the magnet.
4. A device of the character described including a base, an insulating plate carried thereby, an electromagnet mounted upon the base, an armature mounted to cooperate with the said magnet, a vibrator for the armature, a contact post mounted upon the said plate to cooperate with the vibrator and in sulated from the base by the plate, and lugs projecting laterally from the inner extremity of the contact post and extending through the said plate for connecting the post thereto.
5. A device of the character described including a base, a post upstanding therefrom, a contact post carried by the base and insulated with respect thereto, an electromagnet carried by the base, a resilient armature supporting strip connected to the said first mentioned post and bowed longitudinally to define a bight supporting the free end of the strip to extend toward the contact post, an armature carried by the free extremity of said strip to cooperate with the magnet, and a vibrator associated with the armature to cooperate with the contact post.
